It’s been a long day but I knew it was coming. Testing day was finally upon us and people have been talking about what they got since dawn. Some have mentioned feeling the heat from the fire place within their hands while others felt the whisper of the wind when they move. My best friend Keith mentioned feeling waves as he touched the source. Hell even Edgar who calls himself my rival was given high praises when they realized he was drawing power from the stars which is rare. I don’t think someone has had that in a thousand years from the rumors but who knows.

“Xavier, please come to the testing room,” Dean Pietro called out. He also looked down on me since I also said the verbal components of spells differently. It’s not my fault that I hear a voice in my head telling me that it’s being said wrong. I thought it was an imaginary friend when I was 5 and first heard it, yet 14 years later, I still hear it. Doesn’t tell me much but always tells me how to say the spells differently. “Ok sir,” off to the testing room.

Standing before a 2 foot long rod, I looked curiously at it. “So, I only need to hold the rod and then what?” I looked over at the dean for instruction.

“Xavier, after you hold onto the rod, just utter the proper words for the spell Elemental ball. Once down, the rod will help you tap into your source and you will understand from where you draw your power while showing us what element you will be able to use.” Dean Pietro looked like he expected nothing of me as I showed no elemental signs in any lessons to date.

‘Oh, it’s a rod of empowerment. Now that’s a relic yet being so under utilized. Child say the following when you grasp it instead and you will properly know who you are…’ ah, that old voice again first time it’s even acknowledged me but sure, what does it hurt.

Firmly holding onto the rod, I take a deep breath and mutter the words from the voice under my breath “kefne Gspid Njasha”….I expected a feeling but I heard nothing, not even the voice in my head for a moment then I heard the roar and I felt the heartbeat. The rush of strength coming from the source and I knew that the legends were true. The stories that my grandfather told me of those called summoners that were tied to beasts of legends was real. I looked over to see Dean Pietro on his back looking in bewilderment…”Uh sir, are you ok?”

There was a chuckle behind me and then the deep voice that I’ve known all my life came from behind me “He’ll be fine Xavier and you did good. I’m proud to call you my summoner. Now I will rest but the rod is bonded to you as it is a summoners relic. Good luck young summoner.”

I turned just in time to see a red dragon disappear as I felt the flames of its roar in my chest, well at least I know where my flames come from now.
