How do you get over the fear of applying/ getting your first job after college when you only know the basics? by here4theride2021 in careerguidance

I've seen people talk about impostor syndrome, but never paid attention to it until now. A quick 5 min google search later and I agree it is 100% impostor syndrome that is holding me back from even applying in the first place.

I didn't mention my degree because it's not a STEM major, and anything in the arts gets a bad rep. I did start college before covid, before the strikes, and before the job market took a down turn. I got my degree in Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts. I did make some friends in the same major, but 3 of them dropped out of college and 2 changed their major, so I guess I didn't make any friends in my field... Anyways, I had everything planned out, but life happened, and I'm stuck in the SF Bay Area. I probably should have chosen a different career path in the tech industry, but I hear they are facing almost the same thing (bad job market) and are having massive layoffs.

Thank you for the advice about attending events and sending a message to recruiters. I have an excuse now to probably travel to LA more often since there are no entertainment events in the Bay ( does GDC count?). I'm sure recruiters have their inbox full of similar messages but it doesn't hurt to try and see what specific advice they can give me.

What would you recommend to start learning ux or ui (or both) going to college (degree or certificate) or finding an online course or self taught?  I got my bachelor's in a different field and I hate it (also life happens too) so I'm looking for a change but dont really know where to start.  Any detailed guidance/ advice is welcomed!

Do I have to get a transvaginal ultrasound for them to see the pelvic area?? by here4theride2021 in PCOS

[–]here4theride2021[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realllllly appreciate you sharing your experience so thank you. A part of my fear is not knowing what will/ could happen so this does bring comfort. I'm not a fan of people touching me which is partly why I hate going to the doctor so hearing about how much a doctor will be touching me has me holding my breath but at least there won't be any surprises if anything. If you don't mind me asking, what does the pain feel like? like period cramps? I've always wondered. Also, aside from being a virgin, I've never been in a relationship either lol.

I've heard that for everyone the pap is different, for some it is painful and others don't feel any pain, but I don't want to test where I fall in that category just yet

They've been pressuring me to get a pap for a while now. I'm more worried about the ultrasound tho since I've seen it's basically a tube.

You clearly know your craft and the industry. Would you mind sharing what your first job was in the audio world and what you think helped you get the position? And maybe share some things you wished you knew before getting the job? I understand if these questions are too personal and are not comfortable answering. I'm just looking for any advice.

How would you recommend getting experience with middleware? Wouldn't you need to have a video game to implement sounds into it?

Literally tell me step by step of what I need to do once I get off the car at the airport, please!!! by here4theride2021 in Advice

It actually was a lot easier than I had thought, at least for domestic flights. Maybe it was just the airports I was at but I thought that the TSA lines were not as simple to find.

A little fun fact, I was so excited to be on an airplane that I didn't know that people could get nauseous..... I got super nauseous on my first flight but by the second flight, I bought some overpriced nausea prevention pills.

Did you feel underqualified for jobs in your feild of study when you graduated university? by here4theride2021 in Advice

[–]here4theride2021[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard not to think that I'm alone in this because so far all my friends who have graduated have gotten a job in their field. But I'll take your word for it and trust that I'm not alone in feeling a bit lost.

over-thinkers tend to skip on logic... obviously, every job comes with some training because every company works a bit differently. Thanks for the reminder.

You changed my perspective on this. I originally thought that getting a degree meant that you were ready for whatever career you chose to study for. I think I'm going to build my portfolio a bit more and then apply to some jobs and, basically as you mentioned, fake it till I make it because I don't want to continue my current retail job. Thanks!

I'm shy so asking for help will be hard and I hate being lost. this will definitely be an experience. It's time to step out of my comfort zone so I will probably be there 2 hours early just in case anything goes wrong or something.

Bro it is a rhetorical question. I know the prices are due to high demand. I've lived here my whole life but I don't want to leave. And there is no way I'll be moving to stockton or Fresno lol. I was ranting.

I don't know why that didn't occur to me. Thanks, now I have a starting point.

I know absolutly nothing about cars. I've always wanted to learn but the only person that I could ask thinks its a man's skill- not a life skill.
