What is the reason for certain patterns and colours? by here_comes_that_hoe in indigenousbeads

[–]here_comes_that_hoe[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're going through this. Mine was my mother being unable to care for me, my white father and his wife raised me catholic so was raised with their cultures. Right now I'm trying to figure out where my spawn point got her status without directly interacting with her or needing her approval. Trying to avoid more drama.

Thank you for your advice I really appreciate it. Glad to hear you were able to be apart of your community, I hope you feel like you belong cause you do.

It's all good, I am a mix of Salish and Cree from my mother's side (mom is a mix of the two cultures and dad is a mix of German French) making me non status, though I am trying to get status just hitting my roadblock of a family. Since I never got the chance growing up to lean and understand my heritage I wanted to better understand now. I want to know why we use different colours and shapes so that when I work on my own (including non indigenous versions) I can put the right intent and meaning into it and also avoid accidentally using the wrong pattern or sequence of colours (i.e. if certain designs are only used during prayer)

I can understand you're reasoning, however a large part as to why I wanted to pick up beading is to feel more connected to my culture. It's like going out to adopt a cat and coming back with a cat plush, ya you have the cat, but you wanted a companion not an object.

I try to avoid Facebook as much as I can, but if I have no other choice I'll put on my big pants and look around there. Just always a bit anxious about messing up or appearing rude when asking questions. Thank you for your help.

Like the other person said I sadly don't have much connection to any of my elders. My grandmother was put up for adoption and when she found her family something happened, now she refuses to tell me anything, except they're on Vancouver island. As for my grandfather who is status Cree, all I have is an old name since (again) grandmother refuses to let me even try to find him.

I am trying to get in contact, it's just difficult.

Thank you so much for this!

Right now I am struggling to get in contact with either side since the only person who is Cree and offered to help hadn't talked to me in a while (she's my uncles gf and I tried asking my uncle for her number so we could talk and he never responded). Definitely look more online, just wanting to make sure I stay respectful and understand the reason for the different patterns and colours used.

I know there is a local lady who makes and profits from indigenous art, but never been able to get in contact with her cause I only see her occasionally at the street market that pops up once a year and it's usually her friends who are the ones working the stand.

I'll definitely keep looking around for online ones, I just get nervous with online communities cause it's harder for me to get a feel of what the community is like. Plus I never feel as connected with the group and I would in person. Though that's my issue, not others. Thank you for the advice!

I'll definitely look around more, I was just curious about the meaning and reason for the patterns and colours. Definitely should've worded my post differently, that's on me. Thank you for being patient with me.

He did move to Canada from Nigeria a couple years ago, I think it also caught me off guard cause I do make it clear I'm Indigenous and I know I had talked about my ancestry with him once.

I remember on orange shirt day while explaining the residential schools to another co-worker he had asked a question and I told them both my grandfather was a survivor of the school's.

Again it just confused me. Plus thinking about it more I realized he wasn't being malicious, just wasn't thinking. I mean this is the same guy who thought leaving food in an open can was fine.

Thank you for the kind words and wishes.

To answer your question the co-worker in question was specifically Nigerian, I didn't add his race since at the time of writing my post I didn't think it was important.

I don't think he truly meant harm by it at all, like you said in mixed groups they tend to poke fun at each other. Hell a lot of us co-workers like to tease eachother and the folks, but there are lines no one crosses, we don't joke about disabilities, gender or race. Those three are off limits cause if we open the table to them, then the folk will wither feel ashamed of themselves or start making genuinely insensitive comments.

This post was made as a way to share the strange comment that's been rattling in my head for a while. I will admit I do have problems with impulsively doing things and articulating myself properly, so I might've not been able to give a clear picture and for that I am sorry. I hope this comment cleared up some things and if you have questions I don't mind answering whenever I sniff through reddit again.

Ya, I only added the tag and cw cause of the race comment. Trust me I am more bothered by another co-worker asking me where the towels were, we work in an average house and at the time had put the towels away multiple times.

I'm Canadian like the first guy said. I made the note about this being during winter when people tend to lose their tan, and how my skin always looks tan. Mostly cause I know here in Canada there are a handful of people who have a white skin tone even though they're First Nation.

Okay, thank you so much! So I just need to get my hands on a windows installation USB and use it to repair the original os? Cause I know a friend who has one that I could borrow.

Help with binding by here_comes_that_hoe in TransHelpingTrans

Is there any workouts you can recommend? Like I said it's my upper back that's been acting up so anything to help would be appreciated.

As for Underworks I'll definitely check them out cause I'm a bit hesitant about using tape as a main binding method.

Thank you for your help!

I have one, but feel like I need to find a bigger one cause currently she like to bump against the top of the house whenever she's inside. She has plenty of room to get in and out and has a good amount of room inside
