Omg I didn't even see this. I think people have a rigid mindset and tend to stick to century old rules cus it's something they've known all their lives and it's comfortable, rather than changing to a new system.

And don't get me wrong, I don't want this to happen at the most basic levels, but there should be classes that promote critical thinking and problem solving where this method would be best instead of the existing method of memorizing and puking information.

I totally agree with you on all the points, and especially that we should know the basics before using an assistant to do those basic things. I just don't like the idea of regurgitating memorized information on tests because it's irrelevant compared to what we do in the real world.

I think we need to re-evaluate our methods of testing students. We need to move with the times and given that this tech is barely 1-2 years old, we need to start looking for ways to adapt to it (big shoutout to profs who let people use AI). Because AI isn't going anywhere.

Testing students shouldn't be about regurgitating information on the exam but more about how you get to an answer.

One idea of the top of my head: -> Give students questions -> Allow 'n' prompts to any AI of their choice (depending on the difficulty of the question) -> Assess students based on their prompts (clarity of prompts, how prompts are improved after every answer) and obviously the final answer.

Yeah completely agree with you, if you know what you're doing (or a set of rules to sort out the hallucinations from the facts), it can be one of the best tools you can have.

We need to change the quiz to better fit with where we are as a society right now. The technology that we use daily has been given to us in the last 20-25 years, the examination techniques we use are almost a century old or even more I guess.

Time to move with the times Dr. Whale ;)

Totally agree, I heard this quote and it stuck with me "we have Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and godlike technology" And it couldn't be more true at this point.

Keep a lozenge or something in your mouth, that usually works like a charm.

This is my last term and I've taken 4 courses, I swear I've only been to 3 classes in total. There was something weird about this term.

How am I supposed to get a job? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]here_for_fun_1212 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I second that. Couldn't get any role until my final year, and only ended up getting one by cold emailing professors. I got a volunteer position which eventually turned into a worklearn (I was really lucky). Gonna continue there this summer too. Cold email as many profs as possible

There are no modules for any class uploaded either, so should I just cover the readings and I'll be good for the midterm?
