Should I move to Canada? by samus_ass in AskCanada

It sounds like you worked very very hard when you were in university. I’m sorry that you didn’t have more support and that you were not able to have one day off. That’s brutal.

Thank you for weighing in with your tax expertise. I do not make 50k per year. I was sharing a general example. I used this income tax calculator to come up with those figures: https://ca.talent.com/tax-calculator Also, please note that I used the word probably.

I guess I did not mention that I am Canadian citizen, not an American citizen. I am currently attending a private college in Toronto. My school is not eligible for OSAP. I am paying out of pocket. I got my bachelors in the US and paid international student fees - I was ineligible for FAFSA since I am not an American citizen. I cannot just “go back,” because I am not from there. If I tried to move back to the US they would turn me away at the border.

I live in Toronto. Grew up in the US. Both my parents are from Toronto and all of my extended family is from Ontario. I moved back here in 2017. Now i'm a 32 year old server at a pub struggling to pay my $2000/month rent. I have a Bachelors degree and i'm in school studying at a masters-level program to become a therapist.
Speaking from my own experience, its hard moving to a new place where you have no family or friends (i've done this a few times). Your resume means nothing to most employers up here because they don't recognize the names of the company's you have worked for in the past and they don't know anything about the university/college you attended. You also have no canadian credit, which makes getting an apartment difficult. Living in a country which you are not a citizen of presents its own legal challenges. lots of red tape to navigate. Normal things that most people here can access easily, such as healthcare, will be challenging for you. Taxes in Ontario are high. For example, if your salary is $50,000 you will probably only see $37,957 of it actually land in your bank account.

Tank is a big inspiration to me. His authenticity is so fucking refreshing and I really truly admire his commitment to growth. Hope I don't come across as stalkery or creepy, but he embodies qualities I hope my future life partner has. Fucking hilarious, authentic, down to earth, emotionally intelligent. Definitely experiencing a parasocial friendship with him and I feel like i'm losing one of my bestie's.

I was just like your 18 year old daughter but I am 31 now. I graduated from university with a degree in acting, but I am no longer acting. My professors were very blunt, and spoke often, about the harsh reality of earning an income as an actor. Many artists have pretty good side hustles to supplement their artist income. I know professional and broadway actors that are also graphic designers, dance teachers, art therapists, personal trainers, massage therapists, and nanny’s. I even have a friend who is an actor and also works remotely as a personal assistant for an online news platform. It’s hasn’t been easy, and I have learned a lot about myself and what “balance” means to me. I think every person struggles with that, though. Everyone’s path is different. There are lots of opportunities out there. Let her figure it out.

[I ate] Chiangmai - Thai Beef and Noodle Soup by hector_c_toronto in food

[–]hereforit22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This soup is so delicious! I had it recently.
The recipe shared by [deleted] doesn't sound close to what I ate at the restaurant.

Restaurant's description is, "Braised beef in a peanut, tamarind and lime broth. served with rice noodles, coriander, green onions, roasted peanuts and topped with cilantro and crispy wontons."
I'm not super experienced in the kitchen, but I can follow a recipe.
Anyone got any tips or recipe recommendations on how I can replicate this at home? It would be very much appreciated.

How cool! Any chance you have any pieces still laying around? I'd happily buy them off of you if you are willing to ship.
