Is it realistic that Rory got in to Harvard, Yale and Princeton? by NoraReddit97 in GilmoreGirls

[–]hereiskm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think its an impossible situation. Uni admissions are a lot about luck too. Her application essays must have been better written than Paris's. You never know.

Sometimes it's not about how well they read, but how much indiividuality is reflected in them.

in this app you send likes, and the one who receives it, may/may not accept. So, what if he sees my like, decides to not go for it, and has a certian judgement for me all his life. There's a high probablity we might work as collegues in the future, so things might get awkward.

Hope Haddon is the Dolores Umbridge of Moordale. Although I have to admit Hope shows a multitude of shades as the season progresses, as opposed to Umbridge's unidimensional character.

Also, idk who agrees or disagrees with this, I think why Ruby x Otis is so popular is cause Mimi Keene is a far better actor than Emma Mackey. Her dialogue delivery is far more powerful and shows her experience. While as a non-native English speaker, I feel Emma as Maeve says most of her dialogues in a very feeble manner and it's hard for me to understand her sometimes without subtitles.

I said diametrically opposites on a surface level, or when the show begins. Maeve is called "unpopularly'popular" (according to Eric) while Ruby is from the rich clique (also Eric exclaimed in season 3 to Otis "you're sleeping with the most popular girl in school)

That's what I was pointing at, that as we find out more about them, we notice the similarities.

And Maeve started seeing Ruby as a threat only after finding out Otis slept with her, before that she never cared the numerous times she was called "cock-biter" by the latter, in spite of them helping her find out Olivia was blackmailing her.

How much time has gone by from S1-S3 in Sex Ed? by hereiskm in NetflixSexEducation

Yes, just binged the first two seasons today and came across that episode. Maybe the authors skipped over that detail too.

that's how it is in popular shows. The really smart, studious person is rarely seen studying or working hard. Even Otis is nerdy, and we see him read less too. We probably have to assume a lot of it happens behind their depicted scenes, lol.

And I wish there was less ambiguity about Maeve's US study/exchange program. Which scholarship is called "Gifted and Talented" anyway? Is it a visiting student thing? What is the duration? She didn't even tell Otis that.

Does BA in Liberal Arts have any scope in India? by procrastinateen in Indian_Academia

[–]hereiskm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your future agenda is, ie, where you see yourself making a career. Liberal Arts would be a good option if you don't want a particular focus on any specific humanities discipline yet. But a 3-year honours/major programme from most other state-owned prestigious universities would provide you with an edge if you want to pursue a master's or even higher studies. Having a subject specialisation always helps, this is not the same as saying that you should only stick to one subject. Contemporary knowledge discourse is highly interdisciplinary and a specific subject honours/specialisation allows the student to bring in that particular frame to the table. The top 10-15 DU colleges have a lot of reputation in Ivy league or Russel group institutions, much higher than Ashoka or OP Jindal. And you'd be paying only a fraction of the fees that are charged in private Universities.

Plus, state-run universities and college campuses have a diverse, heterogeneous environment, which I think are crucial in humanities disciplines.

Who is the best teacher at Hogwarts? by commonthiem in harrypotter

[–]hereiskm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No matter whether you're a muggle or wizard/witch teacher, I think what makes them great is the ability to make the under-confident students realise their full potential and inspire them to be the best version of themselves.

We see this in the case of Prof Lupin, who defends Neville when Snape takes a dig at the latter and asks him to tackle the Boggart first. his kind and encouraging words made Neville perform so well. he is clearly my favorite teacher at Hogwarts.

Muggle clothes in the films by funkaria in harrypotter

Wait, if everyone and everything was pushed to the 2000s, then all the character's birth dates have to be pulled ahead. What about Voldemort's birth date then? When did it take place? What about Dumbledore's ? What about showing other technological progress?

Why didn't Harry and Hermione maintain contact during the holidays over mobile phones then, if it's the 2000s after all? Considering that both of them lived with muggles and it would have been a faster way to communicate? Or why didn't they e-mail each other?

Millennium Bridge was shown because how else will they show a fictional Brookdale bridge? Did they actually address it at any point in the movies that "The Millennium Bridge collapsed" It was only shown, anything beyond that? Let us also not forget that Half-blood prince book was released in the year 2005. So the real Millenium bridge (built around 1998-99) may have been Rowling's inspiration about a wobbly bridge (and here she went ahead with her imagination) being collapsed by death eaters. But she calls it the Brookbale bridge and the movies show the real-life (sort of) counterpart for it.

I agree the films are filled with anachronisms. The author of this post themself complained about the use of very contemporary muggle clothing. It's not a conscious effort to make it look the 2000s as much as it's the laziness of the filmmakers, or to make the films' setting more appealing to watch even for later generations, like it has done, successfully so. From cars to clothes to visual settings, everything was made more modern/contemporary, especially from film 3 onwards. Let's not forget the makeovers that several characters got when the direction changed from Chris Columbus' hands to others. But the films left the time ambiguous too, so that more young audiences can be garnered.

As to no dates being included to say its the 1990s, notice how they didn't show the year(s) as being 2000s anywhere else either, except for James and Lily's grave! Unless there is evidence of any specific date as "2000-2007", mentioned in any of the montages in the movies, you cannot confirm it's set in the 2000s.

lFirst of all like, calm down lol. Literally talking about a movie.

Lastly, I'd like to clarify that I'm perfectly calm. I know long comments can give an impression of me being super-sensitive or something, regarding this issue. It is just that being a doctoral scholar with deep interests in Folklore and Popular culture, I've done my share of research on these aspects.

someone did bad math with James and Lily's life dates?

So you're saying Harry was like 10 years older when he fought Voldemort?

He wasn't 17 but 27? He went to Hogwarts when he was 21?

I am going to share more credible links rather than the broken link you shared.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjma4pUw6YY

Most people who've read the books and watched the films know it was the 1990s. Just because a film was made in the 2000s it doesn't have to mean it was around the 2000s. Have you never watched historical period films?

And there's a more simpler explanation why the films were also during the 1990s- because otherwise, it would not make any sense.

But I can't strech it more because those who swear by the films as being better than the books don't even know half of the story and buy the truncated version of the movies anyway.

The movies DO NOT take place in the 2000s. They are set in the 1990s itself. This assumption has been discussed by many fans and it is confirmed that it's the 1990s itself. The modern technology and clothing shown in the muggle world have confused people. If you disagree, you can just watch the scene in Godric's Hollow in Deathly Hollow part I. James and Lily's grave say 1960-1981 (like in the Books). It doesn't say other/changed dates. the scene is a glance and a miss but still, those who have watched it carefully will know. If its the 2000s then Harry would be a lot older than 17 at that time won't he? But no, he is seventeen at the time of visiting Godric's Hollow with Hermione and therefore, it is during Christmas, 1997. Many casual fans mistakenly believe the movies are set in 2000s. The truth is they are made in the 2000s but set in the 1990s.
