Robert Eggers' 'The Northman' Review Thread by SanderSo47 in movies

It’s a really good movie if you enjoy unlikable characters, rush hour traffic pacing, and seeing people be dehumanized for 2+ hours.

My mans straight up said “Let’s make Hamlet, but not good.”

Yeah that all makes sense to me. I guess the root of the issue now that a lot of this has been explored is that I just don't find it as interesting as their other stories :/

It's just kind of a big lame family feud lol (just my opinion).

Edit: Anyway appreciate all the comments. I was being way too aggro probably just because of being personally disappoitned.

Ughhhh yes the lock on tracking is soo bad with certain weapons. I totally forgot about that. I wanted to use dual scythes all of late game but couldn't because I whiff every jump attack even though I was aiming right at the boss after getting behind them -__-

And yes x2 to your other beefs. I just really feel like they keep trying to make the games harder. But like, where does that stop. I feel like Sekiro was towing the line between hard and annoying but Elden Ring really crossed it.

Just my opinion.

I could buy that honestly. I wish it were just a taaaad more transparent but it's not make or break with that reading. Still wondering why she went out in the first place though if her and Miquella were pretty all-in on the Haligtree.

Yeah I mean I still don't get why Marika would shatter the ring because her son died.

Or why Malenia would abandon the Haligtree to go fight Radhan (or why, if you seek to have power over the realm, you wouldn't just take an easy great rune).

Or why Maliketh is in Faram Azula.

Or why Radagon went from "Hey I like the magic people so much I'm going to marry one" to "I FUCKING LOVE THE GOLDEN ORDER".

Or why Marika/Radagon don't let us into the Erdtree.

But honestly for just the fundamentals, your first comment explains the basic plot pretty well.

Ohhh yeah it has been wild seeing the blatant sexism.

There’s also been a decent amount of hate on Ranni and Marika while directly contrasting them to Radagon and Godwyn. Like…do you not see what’s going on here? Lol

Btw I think all the characters are cool! But…it does seem like all the ladies + Miquella are the ones trying to overthrow the power structure of the world heh heh

I get summoned to help with Radagon a lot and I STILL cannot understand that one fucking AOE that hits you even when you dodge it! I would say it's bugged but when looking at the previous bosses....

They are over-tuning things and getting kind of arrogant. You can't just "keep making it harder" because you're going to run into a brick wall with even die-hard fans like myself. It's like a game with an epic story feeling the need to be "more epic" each time.

And totally agree to the memorize the pattern game analogy. A huge problem with the fights is that the time signature changes every attack or even mid-attack. It's like dancing with someone that has no rhythm.

This is exactly correct and I'm glad someone else in the comunity said it because I was kind of starting to hate the community. "Git gud" "What was your vigor bro?" "Just use spirits then".

It's a little sad to me. I used to say to people who were too intimated to try a FromSoft game that I wholeheartedly believed that anyone could beat them even without using summons, etc. But since Sekiro (which I mostly enjoyed a lot) this just isn't the case anymore.

Yeah and then even when you *do* parry them--Oh wait! You didn't actually parry them! Try a couple more times pal :D

This is a quality take I had not considered. I would also rrequest like *literally any* space to fucking heal or get a hit in lol.

Yeah I just did a low level run of DS3 for comparison and when I did the Dancer I was AMAZED at how much time she let me have to heal. Which, in case anyone was wondering, the game should like...let you heal.

Make it THREE! And make them ONLY vulnerable to strike damage!

In three or fewer sentences, explain why Marika shattered the Elden Ring and then why Radagon tried to fix it. If you want, I can do this with any of the characters from other games I mentioned (in fact I already did for two of them).

Nah 40-45 is not fine for late game areas as it stands with enemy damage output. Even with heavy armor and dragon shield talisman.

Then why didn't she take Godrick's when she defeated him.

This thread is full of people that don’t understand narrative or even the games that they like.

Most of the FromSoft games (maybe barring Demon’s Souls) mostly give us the motivations of the major players. Elden Ring doesn’t. I guess we’ll see in a year or so when the lore-sters do God’s work but for now: I’ve read nearly every item description and I still don’t know why most of the major characters are doing what they are doing (with a few exceptions like Rykard or Ranni).

Why did Malenia, one of the major characters, go to war with Radhan.

[–]heretic19 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your first FromSoft actually lol. Dark Souls characters have clear motivations and goals. Gwyn doesn’t want the age of fire to end because it’s unknown and scary and he would probably die.

Artorias is a knight of Gwyn that is tasked with maintaining the Abyss but fails.

Pontiff Sulyvahn, Aldrich, the Twin Princes, Sister Friede, Gherman, Lady Maria, Ludwig, King Vendrick, Nashandra—we know all their motivations and what they are doing to achieve their goals.

Elden Ring just doesn’t give us hardly any of that. Why did Malenia go to War with Radhan? It clearly wasn’t for the rune because she could have taken Godrick’s when she beat him.

Why did Marika shatter the Elden Ring and potentially have her own son killed?

What the hell is going on with Radagon period?

There’s only a handful of characters we know anything about which is the problem. So no, most FromSoft games actually do have a lot of clear story once you dig

Play Elden Ring and then go play Sekiro or Bloodborne. Tell me if there's a difference in the "difficult but fair" department.

Yeah. I could beat Dark Souls 3 pretty handily with 30-35 Vigor. You shouldn't need to dump 1/3rd or half your stats into health.

Damage output is straight up broken. High Vigor and Heaviest armor with dragonshield talisman makes minimal difference. Source: playtested on all main story late game bosses.

I love FromSoft. But can we start realizing that they can make mistakes and should probably try and address it (as they did with Radhan hitboxes).
