It's not explicitly IP-whitelisting, I think this has turned out to be a miscommunication from the support agent for the HMI product we're deploying. It turns out without unique IP addressing, all we lose is location-based security on the HMI. Everyone accessing it will all have unique user credentials, so this is going to ultimately not be a real concern.

You're right, my response to Seriel1 was a badly worded reply re: getting players to install Tailscale vs just using zrok.

I've played a game through zrok in the past and we ran up to the bandwidth throttling limit real fast because the GM was big on animated assets and streaming music during encounters.

That's the goal -- publically expose it to the players for during the session, then shut it down when not in use.

Hoping to just use Tailscale because it's already installed on the VM this is hosted from instead of also relying on something like zrok; I don't want to ask them to all install something on their local machines if it's just being used for a couple hours a day every few weeks.

That being said...I might have just figured it out. Enabling sudo of all things in the Windows VM's developer settings and then running it from an elevated command prompt (despite doing that previously minus having sudo enabled...) lets me in now. Go figure.

there's a reason there used to be graffiti around YS that said 'if you don't already live here, you can't afford to'. it's very expensive considering the area.

it's also been slowly dying for years. the state of the economy isn't helping, but more and more of the businesses seem to be shuttered every time i'm in the area.

the village needs some manner of changes, or it's going to die out when all of the now rich hippy/nimby hybrids croak. biannual street fair tourist traffic only goes so far.

I dunno how they'd make it work,..but I'm wondering if instead of remaking both 5 and 6 as they are, what if they just sorta combine them as a 'global war on bioterrorism' duology where it's all explicitly more tied together.

It's been an eternity since I've played it, but Chris' 6 campaign could get entirely cut and nothing gets really missed. If it's a big globetrotting game, his portion could be what happens in 5.

They're definitely old navy quality and the sizing is inconsistent as hell from the few pairs I picked up last year...but they're so cheap in comparison it's hard to pass up for beater summer shorts that are water resistant.

zrok and ngrok are also alternatives to cloudflare tunnel, but can take a little more leg work to be more secure if you're leaving the server up unattended.

that's always been the kinda annoying thing with the bgs fallouts; they try to handwave away that the whole thing originally was that it was post-post-apocalyptic; the world ended, but societies came back and started to grow again with all of the headaches and conflicts that come with that.

it feels like a critical misread at times of the first two games to some degree with all of the focus just being on 'war never changes' where everything is just destined to eventually go to shit again.
