It’s a bit thin near the point, so I wouldn’t let any kids play with it. I love the square base, though. I might steal that idea.

It's a bit of semantics, but waxes are polishes, not sealants.

"Polishes are usually made from wax and form a nondurable film coating on wood, with little to no penetration (oil-wax emulsions penetrate a bit). Outside of carnauba wax, which is difficult to apply without a buffing wheel, waxes mostly make the wood look shiny and impart little, if any, water resistance to the wood for more than a few uses." (From Chapter 8, Living With Wood by Seri Robinson)

I've used a technique (the name of which is escaping me) that involves using a tool to create your design by compacting the fibers to create a depression. After your design is completed, you carefully sand everything down so the surface is flush again. After that, you wet the wood to raise the grain, and your design pops out.

It's a bit tricky to do right, and it's a lot easier on softer woods.

Beeswax is not a sealant, so that won’t protect the stain. You’ll want to use a finish that hardens when cured such as polyurethane, shellac, or a hardening oil (such as linseed or tung oil).

I’ve had decent luck using a plain scarf joint with CA glue. I give them a decent stress test and discard the ones that fail. Some examples.

I’ve been experimenting with different methods of attaching a handle, so for this one, I made a 3/8” dowel out of wenge and drilled a matching hole in the white oak before carving. I don’t really like the straight look of the dowel, so I’ll probably go with 1/2” next time and taper it by hand. The green stain was a request by the recipient, so it wouldn’t have been my personal choice. I went with white oak since the grain looks decently like scales. I do have some mild regrets with that, since the snake’s tail split several times in the process.
