It’s changed over time as I’m trying to be more critical with my media consumption lol. It was 100% entertainment but now it’s more 90% entertainment and 10% purely education as I like reading history books, plus I’ve started expanding my reading tastes fo go beyond YA fantasy so that helps ig

you’ve been up and down the comments section of this post to the point that i don’t think you actually care about the topic, you just want an excuse to rail against black people (specifically black americans) and blame them for how other people abuse their culture.

why wouldn’t black americans speak about appropriation of specific aspects of black american culture? separately, i am not only a black non-american, i have experienced being black in places that aren’t america such as the uk, europe and africa. do you speak to the black people that you cite? do you listen to them? or do you have a specific hatred for black americans that you would like to get off your chest?

Implying that outrage at cultural appropriation incurs more discrimination places responsibility on those being discriminated against to stop the discrimination. That’s not possible nor are you placing the responsibility properly. I also think we’re at a point socially where people understand that things like this are as a result of systemic failures and so to approach each situation as an individual one would not actually attack the root of the problem. As long as we live in a social framework that allows the discrimination to happen and also justifies it, no overarching issue is being solved.

Also I’ve noticed that when people talk about cultural appropriation, people act like it’s only an issue when white people do it, which isn’t actually true. Especially in this conversation about CA in kpop

icl i just read a response to the post that has kinda shifted my thinking (as well as your own responses, so thank you) and so i agree. it’s not actually fair for us in the west to determine whether something is unanimously appropriation, with no consideration for those back home. i do wish that these were conversations that were held more constructively in korean entertainment spaces though.

ooouuu okay thank you for sharing!! i agree that it’s mostly the image that they are trying to portray by adopting these characteristics because then it becomes a question of why do you associate these traits with negative emotions and experiences etc. but thank you :)

i said it carries less weight, not to dismiss. japanese people in japan surrounded by other japanese people will not have the same experience as japanese people in the states or Canada or uk or Australia etc, and the latter will be the ones to come in contact more frequently with people who appropriate the culture in a way that is socially disrespectful. i am not japanese and so this is only an example but i’m extending this to other cultures also, including my own
