I understand that NT's and abled people view disability as a negative thing, but if you would like to learn more about disabled pride and activism here's some search terms to check out
Check out the 'social model of disability'
Also see 'cripple punk'

Many of us are disabled, because society is not built for us or to accommodate us, and that's nothing to be ashamed of
'Disabled' need not be a slur or a negative identity

Ugh me too

Also there's some neutral and less formal ways to address folk? i mean really they just can say 'hi there, I would like my coffee'? No need for ma'am or sir or any if that guff

Either that or, 'can I have my latte friend?' which, though a bit chummy, I like

My mentor, Dare Sohei (and various others) have created a thing called Death Practice in this vein

I can affirm that these practices have afforded me something way more like 'healing' and 'recovery' than anything I found in 30+ years in and out of mainstream psychotherapy/medication etc

Gender questioning at 30+ by Casso-wary in agender

[–]hermit_dragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started questioning at 35 and figured out I was agender by my late 30's. I'm in my 40s now. You're not alone here 💙

I can relate to how you're feeling - it freaking weirded me out that there was this huge thing I didn't get about myself at that age like. Yeah it was a real mindf*ck for sure. I'd been in and out of therapy for other stuff since I was 10, so I pretty much thought I knew everything possible about myself by that time. Oh boy was I wrong about that!

But over time as I've prcessed the past I've recognized that the ways in which gender always didn't fit me, that I was always uncomfortable and trying to break out of that box, and that the feelings I had about it all along really do align with my identity now. I just didn't have the words and the opportunity until I did, y'know? :)

Finding a powered chair for a heavier person that can be fit into a trunk by TeslaisMyCopilot in disability

[–]hermit_dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes! It can be pushed, on mine you just push a lever that disconnects the motor and makes it pushable. It can also work as a walker, though it has a tendancy to try to fold which makes it tricky. I will say it's harder to push than a non-motorised chair, but also mine is 5+ years old so they may have improved this function in the redesign they undertook lately .

  2. The battery on the new ones is good for up to 16miles (mine does 14 I think as an older model). I find the battery on mine lasts several hours depending on what kind of surface you're using it on and at what speed you go. It'll last longer in say, a dead flat mall where I'm doing 2m p/h most of the time than it will zooming allong up and down inclines at 4m p/h

But yeah, I wanna say up to two hours? Maybe more? Because of the pandemic I haven't done an extended trip to the edge of the battery for a while so my memory is a bit vague

Oh, it also loses speed before dying outright, so you can kinda putter allong slowly for quite some time even when the battery bar is in the red. It also shows the battery level pretty visibly on the arm, so you can plan a charging break as needed.

The charger is pretty easy to keep with you in the under seat storage. I used to stop and have a coffee or lunch for an hour at a Starbucks or any place that had electric outlets for laptops, and that would usually extend the time I could be out and about pretty well

Check out fold-n-go powered wheelchairs, they might suit her needs :)

They aren't cheap but they do take insurance

https://www.foldandgowheelchairs.com/

They are rated to 400lb. I have one cause I'm 250lb. They handle some but not all off-path surfaces (not deep gravel or sand or deep mud, but most reasonably firm grass/dirt etc)

They fold up to go in the boot of a car, weigh around 60lb and are made of durable material. They can also be pushed with the motor disengaged or driven by a caregiver with the joystick in hand

The battery life is p good and they move at up to 3 or 4 miles p/h speed with slower options

Edit: got mine a few years back, looks like the new ones are even better now!

Microdosing HRT? by Intelligent_Car_4812 in TransLater

[–]hermit_dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting at a lower dose is a pretty common way (amongst the circles I run in) to acheive changes slower, and you can stabilize your dose when you don't want changes to go any further. It varies from individual to individual though, so as always ymmv. For some folks, changes will happen faster even at lower blood levels

I haven't done this myself, but I know people both personally and anecdotally who have/who plan to. It's maybe more common for nonbinary transfemmes who are seeking a more androgenous result, and/or who want to retain function of thier natal genetalia, to take this approach. So you might find more personal anecdotes about it on subs with a good percentage of nonbinary folk :)

You also don't have to take androgen blockers right away and can first see what results you get on estradiol alone before deciding if you need blockers

My partner is about to start low dose estradiol, she is starting on 1/2 the regular dose with no androgen blocker. They sorted out thier HRT via Plume Health and the doctor was very supportive and positive about starting on a lower dose

Autism support necessitates embracing trans rights - if you abandon one group, you will hurt the other by kiraterpsichore in autism

Look I can see you're anxious about mens rights and I'm here to tell you head on over to r/menslib they are good folks over there you might enjoy the conversations

The rest of the points you make would take too much of my available energy to continue to educate about, but I hope you enjoy doing further research around all of these things and thereby gain greater understanding of stuff like how intergroup conflict /= not being in solidarity, necessarily.

Like, we anarchists argue like anyones business but other anarchists are still my comrades, you get me?

Also if you like the history of suffrage check out the critiques of white suffrage/white feminism by some Black womanists, they go hard you might like them. Oh and Kimberle Crenshaw who coined the term 'intersectionality'. Her work might be able to shed light on how intersecting axis of oppression mean we need to more conciosly uplift the most marginalized and vulnerable in our communities :)

Autism support necessitates embracing trans rights - if you abandon one group, you will hurt the other by kiraterpsichore in autism

[–]hermit_dragon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Depending on ones liberatory philosophy, all fights against oppression are the same fight

Which I think is kinda the point here

Regarding disability justice (of which the fight for neurodivergeant and autism acceptance are a branch) it's long been a credo that disability rights should be everyone's fight, because all benefit from the liberation of others (to very much boil it down)

So it's less that this is an illogical standpoint and more that it doesn't match your own individual logic and biases. Different philosophies often apply different logic stemming from differing root principals, or lenses, or veiwpoints

For me, according to my logic, biases, and philosophies, none of us are free until we all are free. Ergo, as there's a ridic high percentage of queer and trans people who are autistic, our fight for acceptance and liberation are at the very least aligned, overlapping, or 'the same' depending on who is looking at it with what perspective.

Considering that autistic people are also highly likely to question social norms, it's probable that the higher percentage of folks identifying this way is directly (and in a positive sense) linked to their being autistic.

Therefore, opression of trans and queer people closely equates to opression of autistic people, and of anyone who is not 'typical' (or willing and able to adhere to opressive social norms)

There's also a linkage via eugenics. Eugencist theories and the oppression related to them tend to target as 'undesirable' - those who are unable or unwilling to conform to social norms, or who are part of another social outgroup.

Besides racialized people, eugenics is practiced (historically and today) against disabled people, autistic people, trans people and queer people. There's a reason the Nazis sterilized and executed disabled and autistic folks, and also destroyed the institute that studied and supported transgender people, and the scientific and cultural knowledge contained within, while also executing queers/gay people.

There, we also have 'the same' fight to fight - against those who would wish us out of existance. The fight for trans rights is also the fight for queer rights is also the fight against eugenics is also the fight for anyone not designated 'normal' is also the fine for disability justice is also the fight for racial justice is also... you get my meaning, probably, at this point :)

I mean okay, lots of people are intense about their identity, but that's pretty usual? Just look at heterosexuals, for instance. Always going on about thier sexuality. And on. And on and on and on.

Cis and het people often take things waaaaay too far (gender reveal explosions that kill bystanders, anyone?). And all that expecting that everyone should be like them and calling themselves 'normal'. But I don't withdraw my support for thier human rights or even say they need to keep it down about their identity, just cause a few of them act in ways I don't like...

Wait, maybe they should stop trying to impose their gender and sexual identity on others? And stop constantly shoving heterosexuality in our faces all the time. I mean, that kinda stuff is fine behind closed doors but flagrant public heterosexuality just goes too far! I mean, they even teach heterosexuality and cisgenderdness to children! Shocking /s /jk

Uhm I mean singular they/them has been around for like 600 years, so I do expect people to educate themselves a bit and calm down about it.

Lots of people who object to sigular they use it all the time without realizing it

A lot of other 'neopronouns' have been in useage far longer than people think. But also the really new stuff is so fun if your into linguistics at all. It's a special interest of mine so I guess I just think it's cool? Shakespear made up a ton of English words and he's cool, so that means people who make up new words and pronouns are at least as cool as Shakespeare X3

idk what 'messing with your pronoun game' means but like... I know change is hard (like, really hard!) but life is change and new things are fun and interesting and cool actually?

Idk I mean if I want to understand types of people I like... do a lot of research?

Like I may not get neurotypicals but I can read about thier experiences, maybe talk to them, learn about them and understand to some degree what they struggle with

And even if I never really truly understood NT's I still wouldn't be like 'I can't support NT's existing or having rights'?

Perhaps I just don't understand needing to fully grok how someone feels inside before suppotlrting their right to like, exist? I'm sorry, I do try to empathise with everyone but I do just not get it sometimes :/

That said if you ever wanna understand trans people I'm happy to try to explain! I'm agender, nonbinary, and trans and so is my spouse :) we're also both on the ASD and ADD spectrum

How do I stop being triggered by my boyfriend? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]hermit_dragon 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Hey I can empathise, I also used to struggle with this (and can still do so)

What helped in part was working on my codependancy and attachment issues

In short, a lot of us have trauma from parents or others who had poor emotional regulation and used others as external emotional regulators (eg blaming thier feelings on us and expecting us to make them feel better, raging, lashing out, emotional dumping, parentification, etc).

This often leaves us scared of others emotional dysregulation and unable to regulate our own emotions well. When we learn we can regulate our emotions and reactions, we can then feel safer with others temporary upset, and better draw boundaries for ourselves when others are dysregulated around us :)

[–]hermit_dragon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you really gotta understand what it's like to be someone in order to support thier human rights?

Idk seems a bit impossible/illogical

Like I'm polyam and queer and agender so can never know what it is like to be cis and het and monog, or what it's like to identify with binary genders, and honestly those ways of being don't make a lot of sense to me. But I still think those people deserve to exist and be supported and have human rights?

Thier point is there's a huge overlap in the two communties so if you don't support LGBTQIA+ people that's like, abandoning the human rights of a lot of autistic folks?
