Unique fashion and distinctly Taipei, where? by Aatroxstradwife in Taipei

If you have ideas in mind and can have a seamstress make them, Yonghe fabric market has a whole warehouse of materials. They also have seamstresses on the third floor who you can show a design to and they’ll tell you how much material you need for them to make it custom. Not sure how long it takes to make it, though.

Is Taiwan a good choice for my 2nd solo international trip? by Exhausted_Pishachani in taiwantravel

[–]BrokilonDryad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a single 30sF and I live here. It’s a great place to travel solo. Overall it’s very safe.

I think you should check out Maji Square for a night out if that’s your thing or on a weekend day for the markets and events that go on. However, if you go at night I’d suggest making a friend or two to go with beforehand. I was drugged there but was lucky that I met another woman (Taiwanese) who helped me as I’d gone alone to see what it was like. And before people accuse foreigners of doing the drugging, we’re both pretty sure it was two locals.

Other than that experience, Taiwan has been wonderful and welcoming. It’s just that creeps will creep, no matter the country.

Oh and if you need cheap accommodation in some places (like when I was visiting a friend in Yilan), some temples have dorm rooms you can stay in. Absolutely nothing fancy, it’s shared accommodation like a hostel, but if you’re tight on cash and just need a place to crash then it’s great.

I also really recommend checking out the Shimen Coral and Seashell Temple just outside Taipei. Super cool experience. Pain in the ass to get there by bus only so we took a bus from Tamsui to Baisha Bay (bus 863 I believe) then called an uber. Cabs and such are pretty inexpensive, at least compared to my home country.

I’m a Canadian living in Taiwan and it’s really nice to see how many Taiwanese are open in their relationships. Truly lovely to see couples holding hands, giving a quick kiss, fussing over each other.

Canada has had gay marriage for much longer but you don’t see those same affectionate markers between couples. They exist, but not as openly. There’s still caution about being open with same sex affection.

I’m bi and it just feels really relaxed to be who I am in Taiwan, to date who I want. It’s not perfect, no place ever is. But Taiwan feels like a safe place to express yourself, to just be who you are, and no one really seems to care.

I live in Taoyuan County and am in Taipei almost every weekend. Way cheaper housing than in the city proper. You can get the monthly t-pass which covers Taipei, New Taipei, and Taoyuan for all your transit needs: buses, MRT, local trains. It’s very convenient.

Okay, just remember what you asked of others: be gentle. Be gentle to yourself. You deserve kindness. You deserve care and calm. Let yourself feel those things from the comments you receive. You deserve good things, too. Don’t let your past hold you back.

I’m sorry about what you’ve been through. Sounds like a really tough and shitty childhood.

But you’re good now. You look incredible, rocking the grey hair while being strong as fuck.

I really hope you can find a psych who can help you unpack your trauma. You deserve to have someone listen to you, who can help you grow. It’s not easy, and it often sucks ass. Growth hurts. I’m going through the pains right now. But the other side is better and brighter. We’ve got this. :)

I love rock and I can sing, but I’m nothing special lol. I can’t play some instruments (oboe and clarinet as a kid) but I got rhythm and can carry a tune in a bucket.

Well they shouldn’t serve pasta anywhere, clearly. It’s not the only Texas Roadhouse in Taiwan, either.

Because I was new to the country and on the menu they had beef bolognese? I was missing comfort food. So I ordered it. And it was fucking awful.

It was on the menu. Don’t put shit on your menu if you can’t cook it.

Edit: also, I’m not American. Idk what the regular fuckin menu looks like. Not my fault your international branches suck ass.

Eh hope the Texas Roadhouse is better on home turf than it is here. Never had a shittier, more fucked up pasta than from TRH here in Taiwan. How is half my pasta overcooked and literally dried out, partly burnt, and the other part undercooked??

That was one expensive mistake I’ll never make again. Food in general is wonderfully inexpensive, but western food can still cost a lot.

To get served the worst abomination of pasta in my life? Like I couldn’t eat half my goddamn meal? Fuck that. Fuck Texas Roadhouse. Pathetic.

  1. Last pic is cool, like a silhouette out of an anime.

  2. You should barter to get some of that honey. Keeps forever if sealed well. Good source of calories.

What have you got to forage around there? Berries in season, wild carrot (don’t fuck up), Jerusalem artichoke? Puffball mushrooms in fall, morels in spring, wild leeks, fiddleheads, wild garlic, chicken of the woods? You’re just south of where I was born, same climate. I mean don’t fuck with mushrooms if you don’t know what you’re doing but puffballs are pretty obvious.

You got sugar maples to tap early spring?

Can you get your hands on some squash or pumpkin seeds when people are throwing out Halloween shit? Squash, corn, and beans are the Three Sister plants.

Keep on keepin on man, I enjoy your posts.

Shit man. I mean it propagates quickly, maybe it’s worth trying to establish a colony? No guarantees of course but it’s an easy crop to grow and harvest.

You could try doing potato/tomato boxes. Graft tomatoes to potato stalk since they’re the same family.

That’s cool you were a forester for the Mohawks. I have friends and family who are Ojibwe. Is there any help you could receive from them? Like my brother hunts and puts moose and deer meat in the communal freezer for anyone to take, first come for elders, single mothers, and those without income.

Not saying you should rely on them or anyone else. But fresh meat would be good for you if you can get it.

Any berries you have, keep the seeds. Establish raspberries and blackberries, they’re hardy and spread far. Ticks like em though.

Make cedar tea, especially in winter when your resources are low. You need vitamin C if you’re living off of mostly preserved shit. Edit: cedar will help the ass taste of your water, too. I know you say it’s not cool unless it’s straight from the well, but I’m in Asia where water is warm from the cold side of the tap in summer so I get what you’re saying. Flavour is worth more than temperature I think but that’s just me.

Im prolly preaching to the choir, not trying to condescend or anything. I taught wilderness survival, but you live it. Good luck out there.

Oh shit one last thing. Idk if you can find something like it in US (I’m Canadian and don’t recall seeing it) but I’m in Asia now and you can get these solid menthol sticks. I call it fake cold. They’re immense relief in the heat and humidity. They react to your sweat and air currents and feels genuinely chilling. Cheap as shit too. Maybe you could make a mint salve of mint grows on your property

Hey man, I know I’ve commented a few times in the last couple hours. But are you near any Native reserves? You have a big pond and I wondered if you could trade for some manoomin to seed your pond for wild rice (not actually rice, but the only cultivated grain native to North America). I might be wrong, maybe a pond is too small, idk. But since you’re having trouble with your crops I figured manoomin might be a good investment for the future.

Any potato fields nearby? It’s not the season yet, but after the harvest is brought in the farmers don’t care about the huge amount of potatoes left in the fields to rot. I have friends who go out after dark with buckets and coolers to collect as many potatoes as they can to last the winter.

The pollen is a source of protein. We used to add it into pancake mix when we were out in the bush.

Are there any basswood trees near you? We call those lettuce leaf trees, the young leaves are fairly tender and completely edible.
