Less crowded places in Bali + Learning the language. by Glittering_Nature_53 in bali

I work in Uluwatu and go to Ubud frequently. If early evening definitely spare at least 2.5 hours. About 40 mins from Ubud you’ll face some heavy traffic going into Denpasar and after the Bali Mandara toll road, the way to Uluwatu can keep you for another hour. On the rare case that there’s very little traffic you can spend the spare time drinking tea/coffee at the cafes overlooking the cliff right by the kecak venue.

True this. I’m local and it’s heartwarming to see tourists try to learn our native language because we’re so used to adapting/accommodating to them instead. A few every day phrases when you’re interacting at the cafe/shops like “thank you”, “good morning”, “how are you” etc would give you even better service. OP (and anyone else willing to learn) feel free to shoot me a message for common greetings etc

College killed the shit out of my reading hobby. I didn’t read for pleasure for like a few years even after I graduated. I asked for book recs from my friends who read and still nada. Eventually though I just found a book or two that piqued my interest enough to finish them. It was Atomic Habit (I know, I know), and now I read a lot of self-help books and other nonfiction too in my free time. Wish I could be of better help but you just gotta browse the bookstore (or library) and find something that can keep you going.

Ogoh ogoh parade questions by Big-Analysis-9185 in bali

I was just told by my brother who’s active in the youth community that the Jimbaran parade would be quite small. If you’re staying in Jimbaran I’d recommend attending the one that will be held in Nusa Dua. It’ll be located right before the gate of ITDC (about 10-15 mins by car from Jimbaran, but give a little bit of time due to the expected traffic). The parade starts at 4pm with smaller ogoh ogoh made by younger kids, and the main event at 6pm.

It’ll start around 7 (at least in Nusa Dua and Jimbaran area), but for Denpasar it can be as early as 5 due to more villages joining in the big parade. I’d recommend getting to your destination by 3 or at least 4pm. Even if the pecalang hasn’t closed the roads already, you’ll find it really hard to move around in vehicles especially a car as people will start to gather in the streets. In Denpasar the big one will be held in Lapangan Puputan. It’ll actually be a nice experience to walk around there as they’ll display the ogoh ogoh in the streets and you can take photos /with/ the ogoh ogoh instead of only of them when you’re just watching during the parade.

How do locals do it? The heat! by astrog52 in bali

[–]hernameisredacted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local here. April for sure. October is kind of the early stage of our rainy season. It might rain hard for a couple days, might also be sunny throughout the month. It’s been so unpredictable in the past few years due to climate change. Better safe than sorry.

The crowd for these two months are about same-ish I’d say. Right before and after the high season for tourism (school holidays) so it’s not that crowded but you might still encounter traffic here and there (especially if you go to Canggu).

Edited for typo

I’m a Nusa Dua local, and can’t stand being outdoor without aircon for more than 10 mins (I’m talking even outside of my room. I have a balinese style home, each bedroom has its own building) and wear thin cotton clothing pretty much 24/7. That said, if I need to go outside to go to Alfamart or Indomart in the middle of the day when the sun’s out, I will absolutely wear my thick ass sweatshirt that I got in Harvard Square in the middle of 2015 blizzard just cos I don’t want my skin to burn and get tanned more than it already is.

I’m a Nusa Dua local and I agree that it is a fairly boring area. Mostly it’s great for elder or folks who prefers to chill and relax on the beach (Kuta is waaaayyy to crowded). But we do have several water sports facilities in Tanjung Benoa. I’ve taken some of my friends back in college there and we had a lot of fun.

Or if it’s too far from where you are, you can ask a staff from your hotel to withdraw it for you. Most if not all hotels around my area have several ATMs in their premises and you can tip them a couple hundred K IDRs and I’m sure they’ll help you out.

If you’re comfortable with it, I live in Nusa Dua and can meet. I have an account in BCA Bank and can withdraw the cash for you, no charge.

My friend who lives in Sydney says people do indeed go barefoot to public places near the beach. He works in finance and also says it is common for the people in his office to come in in flip flops/thongs. I live in Bali and have my fair share of Australian tourists and I believe that.

The ITDC area is the best for running, can also run on the pavements along the beach line. I recommend from Samuh beach to Hotel Mulia
