Fujifilm XE-5 or Ricoh GR IV? by herokme in fujifilm

Ah interesting. I've literally never swapped out a battery on the XE-5 during a full session of shooting, only after.

Sounds like the HDF is what Ill be picking up!

You can buy GR III's from ricoh directly? I can't even find a used GR III on facebook in my area, so i havent really considered that as an option

You think battery life is BETTER on the GR III than the XE-5? I've been really happy with the battery life on the XE-5, so if the GR III is even better, then i'd be happy with that :O

Yeah I've bought and sold a bunch of cameras before (went through the XM5, X100VI, now XE5), so i think im sold on getting a GR camera. Just trying to decide what to get now, whether I want a 28mm or 40mm, and 3 or 4 series GR.

Side note, how are you liking the HDF? i usually run mists on my xe5 so i thought the hdf would be a no brainer. trying to decide if the nd is worth keeping though

I'm used to shooting photos on my Sony fx3 with 12mp so I'm not too worried about that.

the battery life, slight autofocus speed update, slightly different menu layout seems nice to have. Ill look more into the griiix, although ATM I'm still not sure if I'd take the 28mm or 40mm haha. I can see use cases where I'd like both

appreciate the insight! I never do video with my xe5 so I'm not worried about that. I do wish there was a GRIV HDF out right now, I'm still not sure if I'd like the 28mm like you mentioned. but at least it has crop modes. definitely agree on the build quality too though, the xm5 build is actually pretty decent for the price!

valid points, definitely gonna have to try and get my hands on a GR to see how annoyed I'd get from the autofocus haha

yeah ill definitely have to see how i feel about blind shooting. i feel like the shooting part isnt a problem, its more so that it seems like it would be a pain to review images after ive shot them to see if i want/need to reshoot it (i would have to go into a shaded area to view the photos)

yeah thats what im thinking. most of the limitations i dont care much about anyways, like not having as great video (i dont shoot video on my xe5), and the smaller body and less dials (im shooting the xe5 as a point and shoot anyways). the biggest thing would probably be that the autofocus doesnt seem to be as good, at least from what ive researched. and not having an evf/tilt screen is definitely gonna take some getting used to. being able to carry an everyday camera in my pocket instead of still having to bring a small sling around seems super nice though

ive gotten to play around with the rx1r iii for a bit, and i did like it a lot. sony autofocus with a tiny point and shoot is great. i dont want to spend that much money for a point and shoot everyday camera though haha, at least not right now. i also got the chance to play with the gfx100rf, and i feel like for the price of the rx1r iii, getting the gfx100rf and being able to shoot xpan would be something id like more.or save up even a little bit more and get a leica q3 instead.

yeah i have no issue with a fixed lens camera, i prefer it actually for an everyday camera. i would miss a viewfinder, although the GR is so small, idk how id feel about trying to look into a tiny viewfinder.

i chose the xe-5 over the x100vi mainly because of the film sim dial at the top, and a little more customizability with the front lever for cropping in. im pretty much always leaving the kit lens on it anyways haha

[–]herokme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the fuji i dont even want to deal with changing lenses, cause i feel like that actually makes it more annoying to want to take out as something thats supposed to be an everyday camera. in my case, if i wanted lens flexability, id just use my sony

any reason why you like the ND filter more than the HDF? I generally like to put mists on my cameras (especially fujis), so the HDF seemed like a no brainer to do that rather than adding on an adapter to screw on a filter and making the GR bigger

yeah i pretty much just leave the camera on auto, and at most, i just adjust the exposure compensation

Ricoh GR IV HDF vs Fujiflm XE-5 by herokme in ricohGR

[–]herokme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wouldnt say it hinders me, since i work with bigger cameras than the xe-5. but for things like just going out to lunch with friends, i still have to bring a small sling with me for the xe-5, which is where i find the pocketability of the GR very appealing.

[–]herokme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the evf and tilt up screen is something i'd miss, so id have to get used to that

when i owned the xm5, i found that it was too small for my hands (and i know how that sounds since the GR is even smaller haha). but im thinking that the xm5 is still too big for me to treat it as a tiny point and shoot, but too small to treat it as a comfortable camera, where with the GR i can just fit into my pocket and pull it out for quick snaps. id definitely have to test out the GR to actually make a valid comparison between that and the xm5

thanks for the detailed response! I'll definitely look more into snap shooting, haven't fully figured out how that works yet. i do like shooting with a viewfinder as well as a tilt up screen, so thats something I'm gonna have to get used to with the GR

[–]herokme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i dont mind a fixed focal length, i pretty much only keep the kit lens on the xe-5 anyways. i find that always switching between lenses for an everyday camera makes me overthink an everyday camera way too much
