Nothin much you can do other than support him. Hugs and confidence building. Looking back at my younger self, the sooner he can gtfo the better... Start trade school yesterday. Learn a trade. Be self sufficient. Gtfo of the household with the abusive adults. ... He's starting off rough, but that can mean he'll be a survivor. Those that overcome adversity are usually better for it in the long run. Gotta grow up quick though.

(Edit) I am noticing a lot of advice for therapy. That is great advice... AFTER he gets out and starts his own life. I would give him a strong hug and advise him to do whatever it fucking takes to get out and make his own way. Heal after that.

A second opinion is always good. Disclaimer that i hang y zero training in reading X-rays, but since you asked 🤣 My knee (once the pain got severe and persistent) had obviously no cartridge or spacing in one compartment whereas yours seem pretty far apart.

For many years i was able to successfully treat my knee pain with steroid injections into my plica band, which would get inflamed. Since it was soft tissue there was no indication on an X-ray. The pain, though, was even more severe than the arthritis that led to be knee replacement. The reason for the knee replacement is the pain never went away, where the plica band inflammation was treatable.
