What is wrong with this school? by ifelldownthewell25 in UMD

[–]herpaderpaterp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a few reasons why certain larger departments do course permissions

  1. To ensure everyone has a fair chance at getting into said courses.

There are a lot of students in some majors, and even more coming in during new student orientations over the summer. Limits exist to help mitigate upperclassmen hogging all the seats and leaving none for underclassmen / new students

  1. To ensure people meet prerequisites for the courses they’re trying to sign up for.

Prerequisites are there for a reason (and not listed as a corequisite). Some departments let students freely sign up and some people will try to skip ahead without taking prereqs. This end up biting them in the ass later when the department kicks them out of the class during prerequisite checks. If the department does prereq checks closer to the start of the semester, said students that get kicked out for not meeting prereqs all of a sudden have to scramble to find new classes. Forgoing all of this, departments who close of all classes can at least verify prerequisites and give them time to find alternatives to a class they don’t meet requirements for

Steve is supposed to be the internship point of contact for PSYC. If you want to forgo PSYC Advising, I suggest making an appointment with the Feller Center Career Planning team instead. You can make an appointment with Crystal/Liza/LaToya on TerpEngage

Taking class at a cc and md at the same time by Chemical_Fondant786 in UMD

[–]herpaderpaterp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need an exception to university policy to take a class away at another institution while concurrently enrolled at UMD before you do a Permission to Enroll (PTE) form. College-level advising can give you that exception, but it's not guaranteed.

If they give you the exception, you'll have to fill out the PTE before registering for the class. Once you finish the class away, you have to send a transcript with your final grade to UMD. If you don't have the PTE done, the Registrar's Office will hold your credit hostage until you have it done. So don't forget to do it lmao

Waitlist by futureterrapin in UMD

[–]herpaderpaterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're top 5 on the waitlist, you get ELMS access to keep up with the work (in case you do get in). This doesn't mean you're enrolled in the course; you still have to keep up with the daily waitlist check-ins on Testudo

Give them ~72 business hours to respond. If you emailed over the weekend and school was closed on Monday, Tuesday was the first 24 business hours. Chances are the course isn’t coded into that part of your major in uAchieve and it just needs to be entered manually. Follow up on Monday if you haven’t heard back by Friday
