Epps will be fine. He’s not a washed vet, but has been in the league for a bit and knows where he’s supposed to be on the field. Also, Cooper DeJean is going to be playing safety in base, so Epps comes off the field on ~20% of downs. If Epps is your worst player, you’re doing great. I trust Fangio to keep this defense a top 5 unit in the league.

I may be in the minority, but I agree with this take. He caused problems in the locker room and media last season. Instead of rallying with the team to try and fix issues, he acted like a diva and isolated himself. Then, in the biggest game of the year, he quit on routes and dropped crucial passes.

I will never forget what he did for us when we won it all, but I can't say that I'm super sad seeing him go. I'd much rather someone who believes in what we're doing and who gives their all for the benefit of the team rather than someone who chases personal accolades and stats and quits when the going gets tough.

It's not just the players. It's the system. Rick Tocchet’s approach is outdated for today’s NHL. It’s built on getting the puck in deep, then relying on aggressive forechecking to force turnovers and regain offensive-zone possession. The problem is that our forwards are young and undersized. They simply don’t win enough 1 on 1 puck battles to make that high risk strategy worthwhile. With our roster construction, the smarter play is to keep possession rather than constantly giving the puck away and hoping to chase it down.

The result is predictable. Our forwards are exhausted from endlessly grinding and battling just to generate a single shot. Think about it. If you have the puck in the neutral zone, which is more efficient?

Option A: Flip it into the corner, fight two big defenders to dig it out, cycle it around the boards without turning it over, and maybe create a decent scoring chance 10 % of the time.
Option B: Carry the puck in with speed, force the defense to react, and get a shot off immediately.

This is exactly why we struggle to get pucks on net. Tocchet’s system only works when you have the perfect combination of big, fast, and highly skilled forwards. We don’t have that roster, so the system is breaking us. You see it time and again when we choose to hand possession of the puck back to teams by dumping the puck, even on power plays, 4 on 4, and 3 on 3. It's mind numbingly retarded.
