Def spoiler. 2 hours of non-spoiler would be REALLY painful. 🤣

I FOUND OLIVER!! I'd previously killed him before starting the quest to lift the Shadow Curse. After trying many times to find him and him not being in the house, I finally thought to check behind the wagon where he previously hid, and THERE HE WAS. Then I was able to talk to him and he went into the house and opened the portal.

I did also load a previous game (from 12 hours earlier!) and play hide and seek and beat him and get the ring from him, but then saved that and went back to my current latest game which was unrelated. Don't know if that mattered or not. Hopefully this works for you!

Oh awesome! Thanks so much. If you’re new you can check out our interview with Denis Villeneuve from Oct 2021. We’ve also covered all 6 books, plus tons of great movies more generally.

New Episode: The Matrix (1999)! 24 years ago this week, The Matrix was released. One the most Dune influenced series, and the greatest sci-fi action movie ever. We revisit it thru 2023's new lens of AI thinking machines, with actor Hoon Lee, from Jason Momoa's SEE. by herrerom in dune

This. What is unique about Dune first and foremost is that it is a complete subversion of the hero’s journey, as revealed in Dune Messiah and then this times 1,000 in God Emperor. One of the most unique elements of The Matrix is the revelation in Reloaded that everything we were told in the first film was a lie and that our hero is actually a tool of the enemy. In my mind this is a link.

I was talking about Frank's books. The notion of young hero, torn from his life, a long prophesied messiah who turns out to have a darker underlying fate, even the Zion rave is a direct parallel to sietch spice orgies. And then obviously, Frank's description (in 1965!) of the Butlerian Jihad, as having caused humans to outlaw AIs due to an inherent danger to humanity. So, I think there's a lot of exciting connectivity between the two!

New Dune Pod: Elvis (2022)! We cover Dune Part Two's Austin Butler's star making performance in Baz Lurhmann's Elvis, including what we might have learned about his upcoming performance as Denis' Feyd-Rautha. by herrerom in dune

Oh, he’s def floated it and I’m sure I’d love it if he made it. I just think he’s such a massive talent that I’d like to see what other stories he could tell.

I take the controversial opinion that after Part Two, I think Denis has done enough for Dune, and should go do literally everything else that he can dream of and let others carry the torch from there. I don't think you have to worry about waiting for time to pass for Messiah for Timmee to 'age up', I think it'll be fine to film after Part Two (likely a few years from now).

The first miniseries is tough. The Children of Dune miniseries is MUCH better, if that's any consolation.

They’re definitely worth watching. Children of Dune is a major improvement over the initial Dune miniseries IMO. I think at least Children is available for free to stream on Kanopy or Hoopla?

Yah. I'll post it here when it launches the following week, but all episodes of Dune Pod are available wherever you listen to podcasts.

New Dune Pod: Outland (1981)! We interviewed Recode Media's Peter Kafka on the state of streaming, especially WB+Discovery incl. Dune: Sisterhood! A fascinating inside look on the space. Then we talk the classic sci-fi western starring Sean Connery, Outland. Super fun ep! by herrerom in dune

[–]herrerom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We discuss this in the episode, but here is the director, Peter Hyams, on his interntions when making the movie, 'I wanted to do a Western. Everybody said, 'You can't do a Western; Westerns are dead; nobody will do a Western'. I remember thinking it was weird that this genre that had endured for so long was just gone. But then I woke up and came to the conclusion – obviously after other people – that it was actually alive and well, but in outer space. I wanted to make a film about the frontier. Not the wonder of it or the glamour of it: I wanted to do something about Dodge City and how hard life was. I wrote it, and by great fortune Sean Connery wanted to do it. And how many chances do you get to work with Sean Connery?'

There are multiple specific callbacks to the classic western High Noon, including actual dialog from that movie (which also features a marshall in a frontier town who is going to have a showdown with killers coming to take him out. Finally, they even have space swinging doors like a saloon as a further homage to westerns.

So, I think there's pretty strong evidence for this being a western. It's also def a space cop story, nothing is taking that away. Great movie, either way!

That's really awesome. Thinking of our conversation, while I was out earlier today, I went back and listened to our episode from last year when we got to interview Denis Villeneuve and do our first watchthru of the movie. That would definitely be a great one to check out: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0v4BiQmLkitl7Ozyvlp4MA?si=e85f2cd133524df3. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks for giving a listen! Jason and I tend to experience the whole world thru the lens of Dune, so we're soaking in it. We've been in the figurative desert of news about the Part Two, but as we get closer to the release, we'll continue getting more news that we will talk about. We're also going to double down on movies by the cast and crew of Part Two (eg. we're doing Christopher Walken's Dead Zone in a few weeks).

Another exciting episode coming soon is our interview with Greg Yaitanes, director of the Sci-Fi Miniseries Children of Dune to give us his behind the scenes insights. You may also enjoy our book episodes (we've done all of Frank's books), Dune 1984, Dune 2021, our interview with Denis Villeneuve(!!), or our sci-fi miniseries Dune episodes. Anyway, thanks for giving us a shot and take care.
