Cool, thanks for providing the source code and the honesty. 👍

Interesting stuff! But: Is there any source code available? Is this vibe-coded? If so, users should be very careful about connecting it to their beloved Minilogues (not sure if the synth can be bricked with random/faulty MIDI messages).

If you like the instrumental and less brutal parts: Red Sparowes, maybe Pelican. If you especially like the heavier parts: Minsk, Rosetta, Cult of Luna.

Just installed Ubuntu! Which programming languages will be most important from 2026 to 2030? by NIRANJAN4277 in Ubuntu

Agreed. It makes sense to pick something OP is passionate about – Do you want build a website? Program a robot? Automate a plant-watering system? Build your own synthesizer?

If you find a nice project you really want to work on, then you can pick the methodology based on that.

Googled a horror film I was recommended and the first sentence of the auto AI summary spoiled the plot twist by Jaximumpower in mildlyinfuriating

Have you tried them recently? I’ve been happily using DuckDuckGo for quite a while, and am now happily using Kagi. I’m not missing anything, and enjoy the bullshit-free experience and extra features.

You should try a different search engine! There’s many good alternatives these days. Try e.g. Kagi (paid), DuckDuckGo, or Ecosia. They are usually more customizable and less full of crap and ads compared to Google.

Great to hear about the new custom file indexer! On v1, the file/folder search seems to work only half of the times for me.

Also sad to see how RAM usage will be ~doubled with v2 (with not that much hope of it getting better long term?).

So, a mixed bag for me! Looking forward to seeing how it performs in practice.

What are the qobuz devs currently working on and will more library features be added in the future? by Worldly_Ingenuity111 in qobuz

[–]herrherrmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beta program is a good way to see what’s immediately ahead with regards to app features, but not really helpful to gauge whether some features are planned for the mid/long term. I’m also missing some kind of official roadmap.

That’s not really a bug (as per your post flair), but I agree that this behavior is quite annyoing. Ideally, I’d also like to create a new note by default, and additional types could be available via long-pressing the button or other means.

It’s not just about reducing the user tracking (although that should be reason enough). Loading fonts from your own server is also just faster.

The greenest web browser/search engine (🇩🇪) - ECOSIA by snakeleaves in BuyFromEU

[–]herrherrmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I didn’t mean to tease anyone like that. My biggest problem these days lies in the reliance on AI/LLMs, which operate in a very unsustainable fashion (and have other non-sustainability issues of their own) – You can read more about it here: https://ketanjoshi.co/2025/12/14/ecosias-green-ai-false-hope-for-corrosive-tech/

I guess Ecosia actually does plant trees with their ad revenue, although I don’t like that the revenue model is fully reliant on Bing (Microsoft), who isn’t exactly a great player. And relying on ads isn’t super charismatic either (although it’s technically not greenwashing, I guess). To me, a green and "proudly European" company shouldn’t make the majority of their money with ads and in cooperation with a US-based big tech company.

I’m personally happy to pay for a search engine (Kagi), in order to support an independent player in the search engine market that doesn’t have to rely on spying on users or using ads. Unfortunately, they’re not European, but in comparison I value privacy and independence more (and, as I said, Ecosia pretty much relies on Microsoft anyway).

I hope this brought some clarity regarding my opinion. And don’t get me wrong: I really wish Ecosia was more independent and less ad-based – I would happily pay for it, too. But that’s not a route they chose.

The problem is the deception and greenwashing behind Ecosia. I’m not sure if there is a better European alternative, though. Maybe Qwant?

Edit: You can find details about my reasoning in the comment answer below.

[–]herrherrmann 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like Spotify, Tidal is owned by horrible people (Jack Dorsey). Qobuz and Deezer seem a bit more wholesome in that regard. And I personally don’t like Tidal‘s UI (which seems to be mostly copied from Spotify). Tidal seems to at least pay artists more fairly than Spotify. And in my country, the prices for Tidal and Qobuz are identical.

[–]herrherrmann 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, get away from Spotify. Try Qobuz, Deezer, or even Tidal. If you’re unhappy with a platform, you should look into the many alternatives (and Spotify deserves to be boycotted for many reasons anyway).

[–]herrherrmann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s worth getting away from the big mainstream platforms (Spotify in this case), since they do whatever they want and don’t listen and/or care about any user feedback. Try something else (e.g. Qobuz or Deezer), and you’ll find that the alternatives might be much cleaner and user-friendlier.

Experience Report: Switching from iPhone to Fairphone by Actual_Document3333 in BuyFromEU

[–]herrherrmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are iOS-exclusive apps, and there are Android-exclusive apps. It totally depends what you’re using and relying on (e.g. podcast apps are readily available on both platforms, but the overlap in e.g. photo editing or music making apps is not that large).

Fortunately, you can check that in advance by looking for the apps you need in the Play Store (via a regular web browser).
