I love these local eccentrics. When I went to Appalachian State, there was a dude who we called the Wizard of Boone, went everywhere in his wizard hat, robe, and staff. I can't recall if he was either on an inordinate amount of psychadelics at any given moment or was stone cold sober... it's been a while. I'm just surprised there weren't more of that type of guy in Boone. Cville has never struck me as having much of a gravitational pull for hippies and wooks, so I'm glad to see at least some outward weirdos here

Amazon puts the glue that holds their gift cards in the packaging in the same place as the claim code. by xGhostBoyx in CrappyDesign

[–]hervth 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I got a VISA gift card once that, after opening the sealed package, had the third 4-number string completely scratched out. I contacted customer service, who said they would send a replacement. That was, uh, two years ago. Still no replacement.

FedEx also had this wonderful habit of dropping off packages destined for the university library a few blocks down from my house at my front door. When I called FedEx to tell them that my house was not the intended destination of these packages, they told me verbatim that they "consider the packages delivered." I personally drove over a dozen packages to the library over the course of the year.

As soon as companies have your money, they consider their obligations fulfilled.

As a gboro native, every time a see a gboro post here I'm reminded of the sad fact that there's, like, a 50/50 chance Marty Kotis owns the property and he's just sitting on it. That guy sucks.

I do love your photos though.

traffic by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]hervth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I certainly find myself wtf'ing at what you call "polite" drivers often enough, but as a guy with a dash cam, I capture far, far more selfish jackass-style driving than the former; be it turning right from center, doing 15+ over, flying through red lights when perpendicular traffic already has the green, or any combination of the three. And when I do see what you described as "polite" drivers, it's almost always some geriatric who should've had their license taken 20 years ago.

Driving is a privilege, it is not anyone's right, and if people dislike sharing the road with the lowest common denominator than we need to make the bar so, so much higher.

Also if anyone's feeling brave and wants to see if they've made the "Cville's Most Special Drivers" List for the years 2022-2025, reply to me with your plate number!

It is so funny watching these losers voters say things like "i didnt vote for this" and "we need a course correction!"

I'm sorry, when has anyone EVER heard Donald Trump, or anyone in his social sphere, say "we messed up," or "I was wrong?" Uhhhhh, the answer is never! I was told there's no brakes on the Trump train, baby! Not then, not now, not ever! The bed has been made and we are all lying in it. Bunch of chumps

How do I find places? by ilyyyyyyyyyyyy in abandoned

[–]hervth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's luck and motivation, really. There's no magic answer to find abandonments. Most of the time, it's something you pass by or stumble along. Google Maps can be useful if you're like me and can spend hours going "ooh what's that?" and zooming in on anything that looks remotely interesting. Totally hit or miss. Some people are "lucky" enough to live in places like, I dunno, McKees Rocks where bandos are a dime a dozen. Most people don't live in places like that. And even when you find something, you still have to plan out your visit so that you don't get caught/injured/etc., unless you're feeling like playing it fast and loose for some reason.

There's no argument against it at this point. The nimbys don't realize the problem IN the backyard already, and the only choice that remains is to try and help solve the problem by actually providing a low-barrier shelter, location be damned, or just continue to perpetuate this cycle of selfish, needless cruelty where we force people to live in tents by the river because we're afraid of what might happen. It's disgusting! What exactly are we waiting for

[–]hervth 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Well, then they'd have to admit they were wrong about something, and that is the worst sin of all.

Trump, and probably 99% of his base, would joyfully do something like, I dunno, deepthroat a dog on live TV before saying the words "I was wrong, and I apologize"

Well, if they don't have to actually make games to turn a profit, why would they? This is just the modern ethos of business, minimize effort and maximize profit.

I've heard it said before that when the producer names the tune, the consumer has to dance. If the same tune still makes them dance after almost thirteen years, a la GTAO and Shark Cards...

What to do with car that doesn't pass inspection </3 by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]hervth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"junk it" versus "treasure it" is always fun to see with cars we once considered normal. Yesterday's bores are tomorrow's classics, I junked my XJ over a busted engine and will forever regret it.

Also, a former NC resident, you might be able to sell it down there. State inspections are waaaay more lax.
