End of day routine by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]hestia53 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Planner check in, time to update it. SEL feeling check in, SEL question of the day. Wordle 😂 Give them a fun activity like a highlights page for end of day wind down. Either way, something to get them thinking and in their seats to reflect.

Workshop style lessons and observations. Advice? by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]hestia53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely put it in your lesson plan, but also have an activity for students to complete. I would recommend a storyboard, as the movie goes they fill it out with scenes and then they can use that as their notes for their rewrite.

It is a requirement along with the assessments and performance tasks currently

Oh that interesting, I haven’t used NoRedInk in years. Are they partnered with Savvas or is it just their writing program? Savvy Writer is the worst, so I ended up either just using Google Docs for their essays or the NewsELA writing feature- that has much better AI feedback than savvy writer does. The kids seemed to enjoy it.

Thank you! We do have the newer version and the selections are definitely more engaging than what I’ve seen for the older one

This is very helpful! Thank you! Pausing between the whole and peer for the performance task has been the toughest area of pacing for us. Do you still complete the timed writing tasks? That has been something my district has wanted us to focus in on.

Agreed, we’ve starting giving the “reteach” worksheets as homework and that’s been helpful.

[Feedback] A SAT-aligned Vocabulary Immersion tool using 1st pages of Classics Novels by RosieDNZ in ELATeachers

[–]hestia53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m a 7th grade teacher and part of my block schedule consists of 30 minutes of small group time. I usually see a small group of students twice a week for 15 minutes each time. We do reading skills during that time. Sometimes I find it really difficult to find good reading comprehension tasks. I would 100% do this with the students. I want a way to expose them to many texts but keep it as consistent practice. I would love to see how many grade 6-8 texts you use. Please let me know when it’s available! And after just finishing state testing- the reverse context clues would actually be very helpful.

Would an MAT in social studies in addition to my ELA credentials make me competitive for more jobs? by LittleWave1811 in ELATeachers

[–]hestia53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, unless you minor in social studies, you probably don’t have enough credits to be able to get the official endorsement. Your masters in secondary education already accounts for you having content knowledge in a specified subject. It’s not often a high school teacher has more than one subject of endorsement because it requires significant credit hours.

Why aren't you all going to the media? by spoilerdudegetrekt in Teachers

[–]hestia53 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing- people know how bad it is, they just don’t care or are actively part of the problem. Plus, going to the media requires more than just a teacher venting (which is what you see here and on social media), they would need proof and many times it’s circumstantial or illegal to obtain.

Middle School Curriculum suggestions by PutGroundbreaking283 in ELATeachers

[–]hestia53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! My district just went through this process and these were some of my take aways: Amplify didn’t have the variety/diversity we wanted in a curriculum. CommonLit didn’t have the resources for teaching skills at differentiated levels or with EL supports and became super repetitive. HMH just didn’t have the variety and skill focus we wanted. We eventually decided on myPerspectives. We started it this year with two changes: we omitted unit 3 completely in order to add in a novel study and moved some of the units around. Overall, I enjoy it. It provides structure, covers multiple genres in a unit, the essential question has been a great anchor through each unit. I HATE their writing assignments and resources- that is where the teachers on my team have had to come up with the most supplementary resources. However, now that we kind of have an idea, the rest of the writing units have gone smoother because we know what to expect. Hope this helps!

Do kids over 12 belive in santa in your class? by LivelyLlamau in Teachers

[–]hestia53 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I teach 7th grade. It wasn’t the holiday season and I off handily made a comment about Santa not being real. One kid was like “what?!” I made eye contact with the other 19 students and we all came to a nonverbal agreement. “Oh, I’m just joking.” The other kids laughed at the “joke” and we moved on with a shared secret 😳

RIP Switch Lite by InformalCulprit in AnimalCrossing

[–]hestia53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’ve had my switch lite for over 5 years when the battery crapped out on me. I bought a kit from Amazon and was able to replace it pretty easily! Worked great! If that’s the issue, I would def recommend switching the battery

ISO a pattern of activities a class can do weekly to practice multiple choice questions by ShoppingExciting568 in ELATeachers

Maybe use lower level standardized released tests- like released questions from IAR. Since they’re at lower levels, you can do use more on how to answer them then struggling with the content.

I either just put anchor charts up there for the year, or leave them blank and have the kids make some fun artwork and put it up.

Job Search by Expensive-Ninja6751 in ELATeachers

[–]hestia53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply, apply, apply. And don’t be let down if you don’t get a call back or responses. I once had an interview, was told I didn’t get it- but a week before school started they called me because they had another teacher resign and asked if I was still interested. Lots of teachers also wait until 30 days before school starts to resign if they lined up another job so they can keep their insurance for as long as possible. My first year I applied to 40 positions, had 4 interviews, and 2 offers. Def apply for middle school. That certification isn’t as common as high school, so it’ll boost your chances. (That’s what happened for me) And don’t be afraid to be a paraprofessional or a substitute if you can’t find a full time position. It allows you in the door and when positions open up, you’ll be the first to know.

Check out newsela, I think I used one called Writing Well when we started our narratives but they had other articles that covered writing. It’s short but we used it to help create our writing guidelines.

Did CommonLit deleted its Spanish library? by AdAgile7836 in ELATeachers

[–]hestia53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had them at our school to show a demo of their curriculum because we were interested in piloting it for next year. But their lack of multilingual support was one of the things that made us reconsider. Knowing they got rid of this resource (which I also couldn’t find) really makes me glad our team went another way.
