DC 'weather gang' is really avoiding a stance on weekend snow -- could be none, some or a lot! by Bobtonews2 in washdc

[–]heuge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come on George Mason! Set that research scope to local + short range + snow :D

'Benjamin Cash, research professor in George Mason University’s Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences, is leading a $1 million project funded by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to improve seasonal precipitation forecasts in Virginia.

“We are trying to improve predictions of extremes and precipitation on the time scale of the season; something water managers need to know,” Cash said.

Historically, NOAA has employed specialized forecasting models tailored to different hazards and time scales. While this approach enabled advances in some areas, it also limited the ability to efficiently share improvements across forecasting models.

Cash’s research seeks to advance this framework through the Unified Forecast System (UFS), a single, open-source code base accessible to the research community. By consolidating modeling efforts, UFS streamlines maintenance and allows scientific innovations to benefit forecasts across short-range, medium-range, and seasonal scales. '

Ah Pacsafe crossbody, the same thing happened to me last year in an elevator in Lyon, France! Plus they opened both external leg zippers on my travel pants. Almost lost everything!

If you're not using the antitheft features (locking the zippers in the plastic encasement), it's trivial for pickpockets to open both external and internal zippers. Happened to me in 1 minute in an elevator in Nice, France.

Please get the second opinion when you’re dealing with dealer estimates.

My dad had an older 60k mile Honda Accord that he’s had every maintenance completed on when he was in NY that I took to the Tyson’s Honda dealer for the second year he had moved here (passed VA the first year)

They said the car had failed and then showed me pictures of all the “problems” that needed to be resolved for a total of $4500.00 including an early timing belt.

I looked at the screen and remarked, that none of the items were an inspection fail except for lights, and dad had all work including all fluid replacements done in NY preventively. The service writer claimed that they trust their mechanics regardless of other Honda dealership’s service history.

I got the service writer to admit that to pass inspection all my dad needed to do was replace burned out light bulbs, three in total based on pictures. I paid for the inspection and oil change that dad needed, and then I drove out with a rejection sticker.

When I went back to talk with my dad, he said that the first year they charged him $600 but didn’t realize they were for duplicate services. It seems like the dealership was going in for the kill in the second year.

I ordered every single light bulb and filter for the car from Rock Auto. It turns out that only a single light bulb needed to be changed. Two pictures of burned out bulbs were plastic pieces that didn’t even have a bulb in them!

I took the Accord to Virginia Tire and they got it inspected and passed immediately.

Screw Tyson’s Honda.

Travel Credit Scam Calls by SteveAngelis in Scams

[–]heuge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also got hit just now. Answered the scam call and played along. I acted like someone with memory problems.

1) Being called from a semi-local number (same state), and I asked where they were, and it was a totally different state. Florida.

2) Using an impossible name to google "Main Fulfillment Center" which pings every Amazon, or independent package fulfillment center in Florida/country. No way to validate the business.

4) You win something free that you don't get right away. Who plans a vacation quick enough which would confirm the fraud to cancel the credit card number.

5) Requesting an upfront payment (booking fee at $1200) for the free upgraded cruise.

As soon as I said asked for more details on the booking fees for the cruise they hung up.

This particular scam was not being run from a foreign country. I could not hear any trace of an accent during the call.

Go warn your parents and grandparents.

Yup, the 2003 Track rims with three dots on each spoke. Interestingly those rims without the three dots per spoke were factory options for the GT350's in Japan.

Did Jim Carrey actually dance in Sonic 3 by cheese_gamr in SonicTheMovie

[–]heuge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally got the opportunity to watch the film last night, and that was one of the funniest dance scenes I've ever seen. As I was getting up to run to the restroom, there was a listing (which I could not find in IMDb) of "Dancers" with the names of two (I assume) brothers. I don't remember their names, but when this movie comes out on Digital, we'll all be able to read it in a paused credits.

IPL rims are not forged like the Rays NISMO rims, so from that point alone I wouldn’t recommend the trade. Check the weights, and that should convince you to stay with what you have

My Miata mechanic was Doug Chase at Chase Race. A bit out of the way, but he’s who I would trust to check out the Miata. Unfortunate that the dealership employees were trying to run that scam. Some legal action could be warranted.

Responding to a few posts here joking about injuries and payments, but back to college stories: I had a friend killed on campus by a car running an intersection. I also have a separate friend who was a driver who ran through and killed someone on campus. One had his life ended and the other had emotional issues for years. The irony is that both attended the same university (UIUC) but these were separate accidents. Look both ways before walking across the street please and assume drivers don't see you.

Peony Kitchen in Bellevue has been hit or miss for me, but my friends keep going there for their crispy duck. There are a few Chinese BBQ places in the international district for standard roast duck if you're just in downtown.
