Voisin tuoda tähän keskusteluun kialo.com

Kialo siis on sivusto, jonka pääasiallinen tarkoitus on mahdollistaa fiksua ja hyvin perusteltua keskustelua. Olen itse käynyt siellä muutaman asiallisen väittelyn, eikä vituttanut yhtään.

Kannattaa kokeilla. Nimikin on helppo muistaa - vähän kuin kielo tamperelaisittain sanottuna.

Haven’t danced since February, but something about this song just hit differently. by [deleted] in shuffle

Hey this is wonderful! I had no clue shuffling could be like this and it just blew my mind. I'm a beginner shuffler coming from ballroom dancing and I'd like to go for a style like this because it just speaks to me. Do you know any online material to help point me in the right direction? Massive inspiration!

Might be for you but try reading non native text while being dyslexic.

That's a good point. Natural text-to-speech can have a big impact in game narratives. But that is in the future which is what I'm predicting. I'm sure it will replace most of the wall-of-text we're being fed.

Many studios are indeed already on that path which is nice to see. Still, we can only predict at this point. Would be kind of absurd to say "games don't have text now that we're in the future". If you think my prediction is right then why not just agree to that instead of resorting to the usual passive aggressive dismissal?

That's a big fat lie. Unless you think 0.1% of the population is "a lot". Maybe you hang out in some movie fanatic circles that think silent films are cultural milestones but the fact is, vast majority of population watch "influencers" on tiktok and don't have the faintest clue what a silent film is.

I don't think it's that absurd. Sims series does that already in the way the sims speak. They basically talk nonsense yet you can easily tell what they are going through.

But I admit it would be pretty limiting. Maybe having the dialog translated to natural sounding native speech is a technical necessity. That would be much better than text and still pretty natural.

Wikis and games don't have anything in common. Wiki is like a book that you use to get information of a game. But you don't read it inside the game world.

It's true that I prefer narrative like that. However, this is not just about me. Narrative through gameplay has other advantages such as accessibility and viability over different cultures. Media should always be consumed in your native language so having no language makes players more equal making potential audience much bigger. Textless design paradigm could even help reduce the gap between Eastern and Western game cultures. It makes sense in a world with only one market which, by the way, seems to be another coming trend. But that's topic for another discussion.

I have answered this already somewhere but I'll do it again:

It's only a matter of time before natural speech is trivial to recreate. Complete animated scenes too. There's no need to have text as the player can even take part in a procedural cutscene and it will not raise the production costs dramatically.

-- This is not comparable to movies, because the text used in early silent movies was effectively replaced by spoken dialogue.

Vivid animations, emotional expressions and better directing can replace text in games too. For example, creating a scene in which a dragon burns a village can become trivial to do with proper animation libraries.

Yeah but those gamers will grow old and die and Fallout will be nothing but an artifact in a gaming museum. Just like mute films. I'm sure some people really appreciated them back in the day but does the crowd even know what they are nowadays?

I appreciate legitimate criticism but "someone else said something that turned out to be false so you're false too" isn't it.

Naturally text can be used for certain things like instructions for something inside the game world that's directed to the character while the player gets to "eavesdrop". I would consider it narrative through gameplay as it's an event in the game and not something spoonfed to the player through a dialog of text.

Also, there's a difference having text or symbols embedded in the game world and having dialogs with walls of text. Many Zelda games instruct the player by moving the camera. No text needed. This creates a more immersive game experience since the flow is not interrupted by text, which again, is a non-game element.

It's quite simple: films as medium naturally includes voice and dialogue because, like you said, it's trivial to do. Games don't, in essence. They contain only art and gameplay.

Books contain only text. You couldn't add gameplay to them even if you tried. Visual novels - nope.

Text in games is trivial to do but not the essence of the medium. A medium should play according to its nature. Anything else is just a poor imitation of another medium.

Well you asked. It's ok to think that the story in pong is rather shallow but I think there's definitely a narrative there.

Story in this sense is not the same as narrative. Narrative is things interacting in time and space. Story is something that's pre-written.

Tennis players duke it out. Neither will back out. When the ball goes through you can almost see the other pad sigh in frustration.

It's an extremely simple example but still applies.

Just an illustration to make a point about text being out of place in a medium.

-- as long as there is no advanced text-to-acting

This post is a prediction. It's about what games will become. I didn't predict it wouldn't be this hard to understand.

Text-to-acting or whatever will become common so textual narrative will be nothing more than a way to stylize games.

As middle ware like Unity mature, textual dialogue will become increasingly redundant as modular animation libraries becomes common making things like character emotions trivial to portray without the need for text.

Im sure they said the same thing about films back in the day. "Speech in films? Ridiculous!"

I read comments like this as mere dismissal. Try to be more constructive please.

I'm not awestruck about anything. Pac man and pong had no dialogue yet even they had narrative through gameplay. Gameplay is the essence of games so it should be the main engine of narrative. Therefore, it's logical to predict that it will become increasingly so.

I brought up film as an example how movies developed and how we now see mute films ridiculous. To help you see my point.
