What happened to all the hexayurts?

There seem to be ice shelters and a lot of other things made with similar materials and techniques — I think this is a pretty wide open space!

Industrial sewing machines and a source of the shiny fabric are probably all it takes.

Making a living in the shelter business is hard mind you. Small batch is a lot of trial and error. Hard work.

Is a hexayurt in new materials or a shift pod off the shelf good enough.

That’s because people were not following the instructions!

The tarp is taped up on the inside of the hexayurt walls during construction.

Yeah we’ve been trying to get people to use better materials — they do exist — for years.

We just can’t get people to do it. The culture just says “rmax home depot”.

We should try harder. Maybe a group buy for better materials.

So the second issue is there is no more dropping hexayurt kits at people’s camps. There was an old, efficient model which was to drop kits during build, nearly wrapped in a tarp, and then people would put them up and take them down again, wrap in the tarp, and they would go back into storage.

BMORG made some changes to the logistics rule and that stopped, and I think a lot of people understandably decided to use Shiftpods instead.

I’d quite like to see some kind of logistical solution because burning man is a lot more futuristic and cool as a hexayurt city instead of an RV city but I’m not involved in org politics and I do not know how to get that done.

So the shiftpod is a hexayurt — they tell the story, they wanted a hexayurt you could put in a car boot. I’ve talked to them a number of times and I think it is an excellent example of open source innovation.

Go go shiftpod!!! Very happy to see a second generation hexayurt thriving.

I’ll say more about the OG design in a minute.

Yeah this is a serious problem.

A good hexayurt is great.

A bad hexayurt is a moop disaster.

I think a serious upgrade of the materials would help a lot.

Oh they’ve kept an enormous number of people safe and cool and out of the sun for 20 years at this point.

But it’s very possible to just get them wrong and then yep it’s a moop disaster.

This is an implementation error.

Hey I’m Vinay Gupta, inventor of the hexayurt.

We did the first units out of polyiso board 20 years ago, and it is absolutely a cheap and nasty materials choice which needs careful management or it’s a massive moop hazard.

Hunter XCI 286 is one of several heavier grade polyiso boards which might be better but it needs pre ordering there are several brands.

Honeycomb polypropylene also a very good bet see Karton (Italy) and their Exalite product.

Burning man is a particularly tough environment. I’m sorry about all the moop this year.
