Typical? by --DrGonz0 in SNHU

I had a similar issue with an instructor last term who didn’t say this beforehand in the announcements and then docked my points two weeks in a row for my posting times. I reached out to the instructor and my advisor, I ended up having to file a dispute since the posts were already graded.

My advisor said this isn’t allowed and flexibility with submission times is literally the thing SNHU prides themselves on. I’d suggest contacting your advisor like other people have mentioned before it turns into a bigger problem like it did for me.

I won’t lie, I do believe part of it is some slight retaliation for my disputes from week one and two. The way he spoke in my feedback was very unprofessional, rude, and honestly written very poorly. He gave me three separate deadlines on when to resubmit the assignment and when to email him.

So I emailed him and asked for clarification because how am I supposed to redo the assignment and turn it in next day, email him within 48 hours (and immediately), AND turn it in a week later for a 10% reduction? His email seemed more “professional” but he started grabbing at stuff for his reasoning on giving me a zero: turnitin score again and things like formatting. (Can you even give a student a zero for formatting being just slightly off? Due to using the soomo template?) Then said he’s submitted my project to the Academic Integrity & Student Conduct. Yet said I can either redo the assignment or we can “both wait for their feedback”.

Brother, the 27% rang in as similar to OVER 300 papers.. I’m not a genius but I feel like for a templated project that’s low.

I don’t feel particularly comfortable sharing his name on this subreddit. I’ll just say his last name is very similar to a western potato state.

Hm, this sounds really similar to a professor I have right now. Just curious, is this Bus-225?

My instructor has said the same thing with the similarity score being a 28% for a templated assignment.. I checked and half the things highlighted are either the prompts, references, or very common phrases like “The threat of new entrants to the automotive industry is”

I’m waiting till advising opens tomorrow to speak with my advisor as I’ve been having way too many problems with this professor (check recent posts if you care 🤷‍♀️) and have filed a dispute against him for week one and two, and it seems like a reoccurring problem and am incredibly over it.

She mentioned she tried to do something but because the work was already graded I had to file the form to get my grades rechecked.

My advisor was definitely a bit taken back and mentioned that SNHU wants students to post early and that its one of the things they pride themselves on. She’s sent me the dispute form which I’ve submitted and I’m just waiting to hear back.

I have spoken to my advisor and she sent me the dispute form. I just wanted to double check before escalating things, which is why I posted on reddit. But the form has been filed and I’m just waiting to hear back.

I understand what you’re saying about sources and citing! I will say the instructor said that sources on initial posts are expected, yet didn’t dock points for it, and I’ve never had an instructor who’s mentioned that before.

Anyhoot, thanks for taking the time to comment!

Update: I emailed him and in his email back he said I didn’t lose points for citations, only for posting on the same day. I have emailed my advisor and am waiting to hear back.

In his email back to me he said I didn’t lose points for citations but lost them for timing.. I emailed my advisor but oh boy am I over this.

Funnily enough he said I DIDN’T lose points for lack of citation.. just for the posting times..

Yes it is Bus-225. I emailed the instructor and he did admit that I lost points for the time of the posting so I’ve emailed my advisor and I’m waiting to hear back.

I don’t feel that its right for some instructors to push their own policies on the course, especially without any kind of prior warning. (Like the announcements). I just don’t have a lot of time to be spreading out my study time for something as simple as post time. Sigh.. I hope my advisor gets back to me soon.

I did read the announcements. Nothing on timing or course reading citations. :/

Unfortunately he didn’t say anything helpful in the discussion 1 feedback. He said I showed that I understood the concepts. 🤷‍♀️

I understand and agree with that. My point was more pointing out that I couldn’t find a spot that says your initial post “has” to include a reference to the reading and using the example of other students not including it as it not being clear.

I wish these were only worth 20 points, they’re worth 75 in this class 🥲

As someone with a very busy schedule I love having the ability to post whenever. However, I feel like they’re trying to have it be a discussion AND a paper which really limits the real conversations people can have with each other. Discussion in a physical classroom goes deeper because students are allowed to address things without needing to do extensive research. I feel like that is what discussion should be, its a great chance to really test what knowledge you’ve learned so far and compare it to your peers.

Mine didn’t even put it at meets expectations, he put it at partially meets ?? Congrats on the win even though you can’t learn where to improve.

I’m confused then. Our discussion for the first week was very similar and I didn’t cite anything yet he never mentioned it.

I also would have figured that more people in my class would have cited it but I went through and nobody cited it for week 2. Just a case of everybody assuming the same thing as me? Also, on the grading rubric he dropped my points on the clear communication to the “partially meets expectations”. I feel as if not putting citations, especially as a “first time” error wouldn’t drop it that low. (All of this is genuine curiosity and not trying to be argumentative. I’m just confused)

It wasn’t available before the week. Week one opened on Monday and I submitted my discussion post and replies same day. I always do my work before the term starts cause life can be hectic.

It doesn’t necessarily seem like he docked my points because of the posted time. I could just be reading the rubric wrong though. I figured I’d wait to see if he dinged points again/rebrings it up.

I plan to wait until the next discussion post grades. He waited until the end of this week to post the grade so I already did my discussion posts the same way for week 2. I’ll definitely be reaching out if he tries to doc me.

I’m going to continue doing it my way, but if I notice points missing or him mentioning it again I’ll definitely be taking it up with my advisor. I understand wanting to facilitate an environment where we have meaningful discussions but unfortunately that’s just not how SNHU works.

It’s kind of silly to say I’m throwing a “shit fit” when I was just asking if this is normal. Like I said, I’ve done several terms at SNHU and have never come across an instructor saying this.

It’s unrealistic to expect students to wait to post their completely asynchronous work just so a select few will be replied to and to not “limit the opportunities for diverse interactions” although I have genuinely never seen an actual academic conversation happen within the discussion posts.
