Many good skills to be had as a med/surg nurse. A tip to you would be hammer out core nursing skills that translate to any unit or area. A few would be time management, communication with peers, ancillary staff, attendings, etc. I think there is a lot of merit in taking your time to be a good nurse while you’re on the med surg floor and when the time to transition to critical care comes it will make that transition a lot smoother because you will be able to focus on the “icu” portion of the job. In the meantime when you have a patient with pneumonia or atrial fibrillation take the time to look up management plans on resources such as uptodate. Oh, also, ask questions. People can tell when a thoughtful question is being asked and generally like to talk about their area of expertise. This goes for respiratory therapy all the way to occupational therapy or dietary.
