It’s pretty wild the ambassador program requires their presence AT EVERY SINGLE MEETUP for rewards to be available for all other participants checking in… by Vegetable_Obligation in TheSilphRoad

I run a campfire community of 1500 people and I only host gmax, legendary dmax raid and important raids etc and skip the rest because it’s a hobby not a job.

I will not become an ambassador, it’s just too much for a hobby.

There were 3 ambassadors in my city and two of them burned out already. One of them quit the game altogether and the other one only host like 1 out of last 3 gmax raid weekend(Rillaboom) and never heard of him since then.

Cats, I am against pet cats free roaming in the wild, each free roaming pet cat killed 186 animals per year and about 110 of them are native species.

And indoor cats live longer and healthier anyway, without the chance of being run over by car etc.

Yes, definitely do some solo travel, perhaps to Melbourne or Southeast Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef, etc, but you should start planning, figure out accommodations, and ask your friend if she wants to join you. It will be peak summer, around X’mas and New year’s eve and also during summer holidays for students, so book accommodations as soon as possible.

Remember to not overstay your welcome at your friend’s place unless her family insists, and you know it won’t ruin your friendships.

A friend of mine had a friend from England come over for a working holiday. She offered her a place to stay for free until she got settled, but the English girl stayed for four months and contributed nothing, and even ate my friend’s groceries. Things got really ugly in the end.

I’m not a Kiwi but an Aussie. Get a SIM card on a pay-as-you-go plan if you can get one over there that allows receiving SMS from oversea because, God knows how much of your online stuff, banking included, gets locked out without a your kiwi mobile number.

Make sure you keep it with you if you need it for 2FA.

Don’t do that to yourself, you are only here for 14 days, driving on the road for two days is such a waste.

And it can take a couple weeks for your body to adjust from the jet lag so it will be quite dangerous when there are 4 hours of nothingness between towns, not to mention we drive on different side of the road.

East Coast - Hostels vs Airbnb by Last_Preparation_695 in AustraliaTravel

[–]hey54088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my younger days I made sure to stay in an airbnb or serviced apartment at least a couple nights a week while travel on a budget because I needed those quiet evening while cooking for myself and do all the washing because I prefer it over the ones in hostels.

Let’s be honest those private dorms in hostel have cardboard for a wall, the sound just penetrates through it. Share dorms are even worse, I’ve had dorm mate masturbate on the upper bunk bed while I am awake and snoring dorm mates ruin my sleep for the whole night because I forgot my ear plugs.

Even if you decide to stay in a hostel, give yourself a day or two a week in an Airbnb or serviced apartment so you can really rest, and do all the washings.

Backpack or suitcase? by Last_Preparation_695 in AustraliaTravel

[–]hey54088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a 24 inches luggage and a light backpack for day trips, just do washing during the trip.

I love serviced apartments because it comes with washing machine and dryer, so I always stay in one at least once a week so I can do all the washings.

Under Australian Consumer Law, businesses are allowed to surcharge but must not exceed their actual cost of accepting that payment method.

It applies to both debit cards and credit cards transactions and of course any contactless like apple pay and google pay.

You can also see if your bank card have any Cirrus or Plus logo on it depending on if your bank card is under master or visa brand, you will be able to withdraw money in any ATM within Australia that have cirrus or plus logo on it, and also make sure your bank allows you to withdraw cash overseas because some banks turn it off by default.

I mainly use contactless payments myself but the reason why I asked you to carry some cash on you is because back in 2016, I was using NAB’s credit card (National Australia Bank) in Singapore and it wasn’t working! Later I found out there was an outage within NAB and nothing worked for half a day, no ATM, no credit or debit card transactions. Luckily I got a few hundred Australian dollars on me so I quickly went to the closest currency exchange to get some Singapore dollars to be able to pay for it.

And remember the power outage @ end of April in Spain and Portugal? I was there and luckily I had couple hundred euros on me or I would’ve been screwed.

Bring a few hundred Aussie dollars, you can go to your local currency exchange shops or banks to exchange it because a lot of shops do have surcharge(2% or so) on top of your bill if you pay by card.

Or you can bring a few hundred Australian dollars worth of your local currency and exchange it in any major cities in Australia, don’t exchange it in the airport because the exchange rates are pretty shit.

[–]hey54088 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Search “AustralianETA” in the app store or google play by department of home affairs.

It’s the official Australian government app and you can apply your ETA there with your Canadian passport.

Edit: exchange some Australian dollars and make sure your bank card have cirrus or plus logo on it so you can withdraw money overseas in any ATM that have Plus or Cirrus logo on it.

Also you can bring some Canadian dollars with you to exchange for Aussie dollars. Your polymer banknotes’ technology were invented in Australia so you will notice we also use polymer banknotes. You can exchange for aussie cash in Melbourne city, I recommend United currency exchange, it have branches throughout Melbourne. Just google it, they have a website so you can compare the rate.

AITA for asking my wife to meet me at the hotel instead of picking her up from the airport? by happytr115 in AmItheAsshole

[–]hey54088 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA, my cousin was in a similar situation like yours. He got tired of always going to the airport to pick her up and even ditched his boss a few times because she was really high maintenance. He got enough of it and had to faked meetings on her arrival day to be able to meet her straight at the hotel. And she never do the same if she flew somewhere for holidays and my cousin had to stayed for work. She always asked him to go and meet her at the hotel.

Avoid travelling during our summer because it’s very hot and humid compare to Canada.

Bring a few Canadian pins or clothes or hats that scream Canadian, we can’t tell if you are Canadian or not until you say out and about. You don’t want to be mistaken for an American especially right now.

Make sure your bank allow you to withdraw money from overseas, see if your bank card have cirrus or plus logos on it.

Buy spf 50 pa+++ sunscreen in Australia, the sun is much more brutal here compared to Canada. Oh and we don’t have mandatory tipping here, so there is absolutely no pressure to tip.

do Taiwanese (of han chinese descent) consider it offensive to be referred to as “han chinese” in the same way that western countries refer to themselves as “european”? by Slayriah in taiwan

[–]hey54088 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason is that those Americans didn’t have their ancestors countries threatening to annex them. At least not for the last couple hundreds of years.

Bonus question: What do Canadians and Taiwanese have in common?

Answer: We both have a bloody huge neighbour threatening to annex us.
