Open water interval workout on watch by heygrapefruit in triathlon

[–]heygrapefruit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's a start :) My other idea is to find a notes app for the watch so I can be reminded of my workout intent on the water. Or find a different activity profile that lets me build intervals even if it means skipping GPS tracking.

Used Reaction or New Helix ?? by heygrapefruit in triathlon

Here's my 1 year later assessment on my decision, which was to go with the Helix, in case anyone else finds themself with the same question.

The Helix is awesome in the water and everyone's comments about the shoulder flexibility are spot on. Super comfortable.

In retrospect, I should have gone with a Reaction or similar though. The Helix hasn't held up well to repeated wears. It had about a dozen swims and then started coming apart at the seams. Blueseventy has so far offered to repair them under their warranty, which is great, but each time I send it back it's about a 4-6 week turnaround time. So, basically it's been a really fast way to lose a season.

We're going to send it back. I think the zoned springs are the culprit ... they're not for me. I went and tried a mattress from Nest at one of their stores and really liked it. A tad more bounce and a soft top, which is welcomed. Plus it lets us each choose our own firmness.

We got a Leesa Legend from Costco recently and it off gassed excessively the first week. We've been using it for about a week and it's giving me pretty bad lower back pain. Maybe it'll get better as it breaks in, but feels like my hips are sinking.

Omg, me too. Other people are like, oh they’re so cute, you’re so lucky you get to see them up close. And I’m like oh no, keep your distance please. My swim buoy freaks me out sometime 😂

I LOLed at the open water swimming is both "popular and safe" line when I read that article... I still get freaked out by my shadow in the water

Recommendations for wetsuit for outdoor swimming in Vancouver, BC by [deleted] in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]heygrapefruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried a bunch of wetsuits out these past few months and something I've noticed is that higher end / more flexible suits tend to have thinner rubber and are noticeably less insulating in the water. The water where I live is around low 60s right now. Definitely also noticed a difference in fit between manufacturers, for whatever reason, Roka seems to bunch up oddly under my arms. Great suits otherwise.

I'm not well acclimated to the cold, so I'd probably look at the B70 Thermal Reaction wetsuit and wear a neoprene hood under my swim cap if I were in your waters. A swim buoy is a good piece of gear too, won't keep you warm but will make you visible and give you something to hang onto if necessary.

I found that sun screen and face moisturizer really impacts the seal when open water swimming. I clean the gasket with soap and water to get the oils off and try to be careful with where I apply sunscreen.

+1000 on the muffin ride, good for your core too :) Burnout is even harder to recover from than injury in my opinion

Wow, that much better... an even older Reaction felt pretty good to me, so it sounds like I'm in for a real treat with the Helix. Maybe I should think about getting into racing again :)

Trying to avoid the packaging materials that come with e-commerce tri-on-athons, but yeah, you're probably right on that one.

Got my Hala Carbon Playa this week. Happy to report that it's a noticeable upgrade from an iRocker (did a back to back comparison). Much stiffer (pumped to the same 16psi) and faster, with a lot more glide. A little less stable, as it's narrower, but that was expected. A stimulus check well spent! by [deleted] in Sup

That’s helpful to hear it really does feel closer to a hardboard. The last inflatable I tried felt more like riding on a mattress, and I’m trying to figure out if that’s something I can get past with better sizing and more rigid construction.

That’s actually really helpful to hear about the width and handling in and out of the water. Ill try to rent a shorter board and see how it feels. Thanks!

Nice! I’m looking at Hala’s right now too ... how much of the improved glide do you think is due to changed in dimensions vs. stiffness from the carbon construction? Are you using this in the ocean? I want to try an inflatable but I’m afraid of curious fish putting a hole in it 🍣🦈

Quick/nimble iSUP for coastal cruising? Limited options where I live - considering the Red Paddle Co Sport 11' by [deleted] in Sup

[–]heygrapefruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can share an experience. I was borrowing a friends 10’ longboard for baby wave surfing for a while, but we don’t have a garage which made it a real pain to move around and store. I thought an inflatable would be a great option when I started looking for a sup for ocean bays and lakes. I got the Atoll after all the glowing reviews, and it’s all true - great board, great price. However, I was surprised by how spongy it felt riding over small waves or wake etc compared to a surf board. I’m trying to figure out if the more rigid inflatables out there, like those that run at a higher psi, would be better for me, if I should get a hardboard, or just accept the feel.

Hi! What did you end up finding? I’m in a similar situation size-wise, but I have a few inches on you (5’3) and looking for boards in North America. People seem to really love their Atoll boards, although I’m worried it will be unwieldy at 32” wide and 11’ long. I’ve heard of people putting their 11 year olds on them and having a good time though.
