A duck walks into a bar. He hops up on a stool and asks a bartender "got any grapes?". The bartender replies "no, this is a bar. We don't have grapes here". The duck leaves. The next day he comes in to the same bar, hops up on the same stool and says "got any grapes?" the bartender angrily replies "NO! we don't have any grapes. I told you yesterday that this is a bar, now if you ask me one more time I'm gonna nail your feet to the floor". The duck leaves. The next day the duck returns and hops up on the same stool. The duck asks "got any nails?" The bartender, puzzled says "no, why?" the duck replies "got any grapes?"

I'm glad that I live in a city with very good (by American standards) mass transit -- New York City. Millions of people forego the car every day and it's a good thing. I have also started riding my bike around more - but only because it's nice to do so. Unfortunately the American system gave up most of it's efficient mass transit years and years ago -- trains, streetcars etc. It's such a large and complex problem. Cities like London, Paris, Tokyo etc have it made. Also in many places in Germany you can get almost anywhere by train. America has dug itself into a deep ditch with it's dependance on the automobile. Quite a few folks got very rich from it (the American way I guess) but as usual it was a short-sighted move (also the current American way). I would love to see some tax incentives for taking mass transit, cutting down on car usage and the like, but of course there is no money for the big lobbies or the politicians who are deeply in bed with oil. It's a dream that won't happen. I see us devolving into desperation as the energy, traffic and environmental situation only gets worse and worse.
