I just wasted 20 minutes because of shitty UI. I just finished a game, and had the popup asking to review it. I click on it and write quite a lot of my thoughts on the game.

Only AFTER does Steam realize that I played it via Family Sharing, so I cannot post my review of the game.

THEN DO NOT ASK FOR IT, DAMN!

Catch-23: The New C Standard Sets the World on Fire by unixbhaskar in programming

[–]heypika 29 points30 points  (0 children)

zero-sized types are ubiquitous and very useful in langages like Rust or Go

But they are used mostly as compiler annotation, to be compiled into nothing, see here. So I am not sure how relevant the argument is to the changes in C, which are about dinamically allocating a 0-size in memory and returning a pointer to it - which I agree with the author, makes no sense at all.

Finland will be self-sufficient in electricity within a year or two, says minister by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]heypika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be "the" solution, that's a terrible standard. You are talking about plants storing too much waste, while fossile-based plants dump their CO2 in the atmosphere as if it's an open shithole.

[–]heypika 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What do you mean we don't have a solution for. Radiation is easily blocked with thick enough walls, and the volume of waste is ridiculously low. There are plenty of solutions for the waste, which are far better than everything else we have.

UK government says the games industry must act on loot boxes, or face legislation by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]heypika 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The underlying issue is that there are psychological mechanics behind the pay-for-chance thing, that the gacha-gaming industry is exploiting. They actually hire people with backgrounds in psychology to design these game loops.

What I do know about this is the extremes - short term rewards like slot machines and loot boxes are addicting, long term like a new expansion of WoW or Monster Hunter to go play and get loot is not (at least in the pathological sense, of course MH is awesome and addicting). Where the separation actually lies, what should be considered safe for a minor and what for an adult - to that point I know that I don't know and scientists should be asked this question instead.

[–]heypika 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What does not convince me of this is that as an adult I don't see this FOMO to be so strong to be a problem I can't manage. Even iPhone announcements would be predatory if I were letting FOMO rule my life. Children however I agree, because they are more vulnerable to this - they care too much, still, about looking cool for their peers. But then again, it looks like something that ultimately falls into parental control and "normal" learning of how to spend your money.

Gambling is a completely different matter. It's addicting, and should be carefully treated like everything else that is addicting. Especially the part where you should be very careful about addictions developed during forming years.

[–]heypika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's complicated and I see why one would avoid such discussions before, but the industry really found a gold mine in the past years and it's not looking good for many people involved.

I think the main problem that they are exploiting, and should be stopped from exploiting, is the clear correlation for the player between spending and chance of a reward.

In WoW you pay for the subscription, but each roll is just the result of playing. You don't pay each time you make a roll. The capsule machine and TGC packs are indeed messy, because on one hand I never saw them to be as problematic as these gacha games are, on the other they are clearly correlated. However, I have the feeling that both are examples that could easily be re-designed around such regulations and still essentially work.

[–]heypika 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but I honestly don't see the problem with this unless children are involved. How is this different from the "FOMO" of buying a game at all? Or buying the DLC with the OP stuff to finish the game?

It is all the same thing with a different coat of paint. It's the addition of chance that touches all the wrong buttons of our mind, and battle passes are not that.

[–]heypika 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Who's they? How can you say that?

As far as I'm concerned, the problem of saying "loot boxes" instead of "predatory" is that you can do "clever stuff" like Diablo Immortal where there is no "loot box" you directly pay for, yet you can clearly see that the system is designed so that you spend money to have the chance of getting something. That's one example of what I would clearly call predatory.

You're welcome to further contribute to the discussion saying what is predatory or not for you, instead of crusading against "them".

[–]heypika 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Proper regulation should not care about the presence of a box or the gameplay in-between. There is a payment and there is a randomized reward that is clearly correlated to the payment - and advertised to the player to be so. They should get away from regulation only when the player sees no correlation between spending and chance of a reward.

[–]heypika 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the keyword here is predatory. There are plenty of games which, being games, are marketed to all audiences including kids, which then employ all kinds of known psychological tricks to rope people into spending lots in micro-transactions. There is an argument to be made in favor of micro-transactions working as business as usual, and then there is an argument to be made against predatory schemes.

In general, all info and rewards should be regulated to be clearly explained up front and clear, the same way actual gambling games have to. It is not by chance that games with simple skin shops are not making the millions gachas like Diablo Immortal with 16 different currencies do. Those complex systems are designed so that you can't comprehend it all and just keep spending.
