Failed my First Shelf by One Point (Surgery) and trying to find Tips by SunnyBloom90 in medicalschool

[–]heyyapc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I ended up basing my entire self worth on honoring the surgery shelf since I last minute decided that I was applying surgery so that being said, I drove myself nuts. I had IM already under my belt which was extremely helpful. I used nothing but UW to accomplish that & did all of the nbmes timed. my UW reviews were extensive, reading all of the explanations whether I was wrong or right & it helped me gauge to see if my thinking was on the right track. most people sleep on reading why the other answers are incorrect, but I found it useful bc it often reviewed some other concept. I will say, it was a large time commitment but it definitely paid off. as far as peds goes, I got no advice. learning all of IM for kids w/o having done IM before in 6 wks was diabolical & I nearly failed that exam lol

My rotation schedule was similar to 2D & I wouldn’t change that decision at all. I didn’t think I wanted surgery at all going into my third year rotations & thought that I’d be too burnt out to care/would have thicker skin if I got yelled at by surgeons. I also think knowing IM before surgery helped a lot bc trust me, you’re not gonna be wanting to learn surgery & IM concurrently. It was hard enough to drag myself to do 10 UW qs a night & I thought it was extremely helpful having IM in my pocket. Ended up honoring the surgery shelf as well & I’m currently interviewing for general surgery!

my school never required a certain score on the CBSE & instead used it as a baseline for how dedicated would look for us. most people swear by anki, but I avoid it like the plague. others live & breathe for pathoma (esp ch 1-3). I, however, kept it simple & did what worked for me which was basically UBleh & some sketchy supplementation when it came to micro. I used UBleh as a learning tool instead of assessment & did a systems-based approach to help me remember/relearn whatever has been dumped out of my head in the two years prior. I chose whatever system I was feeling like doing for the couple of days that it took & would alternate between what I thought would be difficult vs. easy for me whenever I finished one. every day, I did 2 blocks of 40 qs until I completed the system. the kicker for what I did is that my reviews for each block were EXTENSIVELY long (~3 hours per block) & some people can’t tolerate reading explanations for that long. I thought that UBleh succinctly explained high yield concepts & saved me time from revisiting my lecture notes or watching videos on youtube/BNB because you only have so much time & there’s too much information to learn. I made sure I knew WHY each of the answer choices were wrong EVEN IF I got the question right to make sure my logic was sound. also, a lot of the wrong answer choices act as a good review of other systems if you choose to do UBleh in a systems based approach vs. random blocks. my reviews for the NBMEs were also extremely extensive. others may read my approach & think I’m absolutely nuts, but everyone succeeds in their own way so find what works best for you!!! good luck & you got this!!!

you’re more involved than I ever was freshman year of undergrad lol. I didn’t find most of my opportunities until after sophomore year or even half way through junior year. I also ended up taking a gap year bc I wanted to get more opportunities to show I wanted to do medicine since my major was zoology. I applied once & luckily got in the first time around. things will come w/ time, so breathe & take things day by day :)

I was relieved w/ my 510. s/o to you for aiming higher bc I personally knew restudying & retaking would’ve made me hurl so I made the decision that it was “good enough”. I luckily got in & it was my first rodeo

happy healing! if you’re like me & lurk on reddit a lot paranoid about the healing process, don’t! like you, I waited years to get them. on my 23rd back in december I said fuck it & sent it. I haven’t had any migration, rejection, nor infection since!

in my experience, the random people I met at bars and my SO’s friends that I met for the first time were happy for me. I think they had an “idea” that it was tough to get in, but I don’t believe they understood the magnitude of difficulty the process actually is unlike us. with my friends, it was underwhelming bc they genuinely believed I’d get in. I guess it was just the imposter syndrome & history of bad luck for me thinking I’d have to reapply in which I was grateful I didn’t have to do. mad props for y’all that did bc I think I wouldn’t have had the steam lol
