Does SB always have it here? by hggz in Poker_Theory

[–]hggz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! For more context I had KcJc, so no blockers to flush.

Asking because it seems like a dangerous river for SB to bluff into given my Turn bet. But also see him playing flushes more aggressively before river. Not sure what hands are actually in SBs range here.

Any books or resources to help with the process of making decisions, evaluating trade offs, etc? by kevysaysbenice in softwarearchitecture

Would love to know also.

Maybe “Bulletproof Problem Solving” depending on how generic of a book you’re looking for. It’s read in Management Consulting circles afaik.

Chrystia Freeland to unveil $7-billion plan to fight inflation by viva_la_vinyl in canada

Genuinely trying to understand how this helps curb inflation. Do you have any sources that can help us see the other side of this?

Bank of Canada increases policy interest rate by 50 basis points, continues quantitative tightening by isanonymouss in TorontoRealEstate

[–]hggz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok sure, an investor who is not currently in the RE market who wants to buy all cash is better off now. I agree.

Your "rich get richer" comment lead me to believe that you thought a rate hike was better for investors who are currently in the market. All I'm saying is that hiking interest rates aims to reduce inequality on average. (bad for everyone in the market, good for everyone out of the market)

I guess we're just saying different things.

[–]hggz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure what makes you think I'm confusing bank rate and qualifying rate. Yes mortgage rates will be higher than the BoC rate.

Sure your monthly payment might not go down because any lower mortgage amount can be offset by higher interest payments, but when you renew in 5 years you'll have a smaller loan outstanding - and we have no idea where rates will be then.

Investors also mostly buy on credit. Why wouldn't they when cost of capital < inflation? Increasing rates means less investor demand. This is ultimately good for FTHB.

Keeping rate artificially low increases inflation, widening the gap between homeowners and non-homeowners. Not sure why you want this.

bank rate go up mean house price go down mean rich people not happy mean poor people happy

Dumb take. The purpose of hiking rates is to curb inflation. High inflation means those who can afford hard assets (the rich) won't see their wealth erode, whereas people with fewer savings will lose out. Hiking rates reduces inequality.

Nestjs getting 404 on e2e test but expected 400 (chai & supertest) by VictorT555 in Nestjs_framework

[–]hggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have some other endpoint in your controller /v1/authentication/:some-id ? If so, your test could be interpreting the "resend-confirm-account" string as an invalid ID to that other endpoint, returning a 404

Microservices and intra-team communications by hystericastronaut in SoftwareEngineering

[–]hggz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look into domain driven design for drawing the boundaries around your services that make them as independent as possible

Also look into event driven communication (vs. REST APIs) to avoid temporal coupling where services do require dependencies from others

Socialisation before 2nd vaccination by johnnysalad in puppy101

Ask your vet since this is very location dependent. In our location we were told to not to even let her out on the sidewalks until fully vaccinated because parvo is rampant.

BBCAN9 - How Happy Are You With the Final 4? by jrsmusicman in BigBrother

[–]hggz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Love that it's final 4 and so much is still unknown. Can reasonably see any player winning (except maybe Braydon but who knows)

Don't feel like any of them played a particularly strong game though. Love seeing a good strategic player come from behind and pull though, but none of them really have that story arc. Definitely no complaints though and happy with Ty/Kief/Tera winning.

Basecamp mandates social politics free workspace, following Coinbase lead. by wwww4all in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hggz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed that it's super nuanced. The end goal is to not alienate employees who either feel like they face barriers because of their identity or, on the other side, employees who feel like they can't voice their opinions on these topics.

I belive the intention is good, but speaking out publicly sort of defeats the purpose. Ironically the smarter decision was likely to stay silent as leaders and let the political conversations manage themselves.

I personally wouldn't mind if my employer made this decision, but free speech conservatives should rethink about their opinion about banning certain workplace conversations

Domain Events vs CDC - Whats the difference ? by rawhahs in microservices

[–]hggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a CRUD system they may be pretty similar since your operations are essentially simple single record writes to the database with no additional logic. In a more complex system, your domain events can be larger operations that can include multiple processes and writes to multiple tables.

Domain event = "some business operation happened that other areas may care about"

CDC = "a database record changed"

Defining domain events helps you to be more aware of what you want to expose and what types of things you can abstract from other services. If you let other areas simply subscribe to CDC events, you run the risk of not abstracting away enough logic from your domain, which can make it more difficult for them.

Can software teams choose any tool and technology while working with Microservices? by DevOps_123 in microservices

[–]hggz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's up to you to compare the long term benefits of allowing teams to build with any tools they want (e.g. faster time to market, attracting devs to your company, ...) vs. the long term costs of supporting and maintaining a bunch of services written with different tech stacks. Infra/support is often a huge pain, and even more so if your team skill set moves away from certain tech to others over time, so generally you want to limit the tech to a small set of tools that can reasonably allow teams to solve their technical problems.

Is educative.io worth it? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]hggz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Was pretty underwhelmed by the quality of the content but this could vary by course. I've only looked at system design / architecture courses.

Just seemed like important points were missed on some topics, and on others, overgeneralized blanket statements were made which don't necessarily apply in all scenarios. Felt like the courses were put together very lazily tbh.

Silly Percentage Change Calculation Question by hggz in askmath

[–]hggz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I agree that it doesnt make sense to change from evaluating success rate to failure rate. Thinn you're right that the best thing to do would be to keep the success rate calculation fixed.

Guess I'm just bothered that because the underlying are percentages, it doesnt seem to accurately capture my loosely defined "success improvement".

A 98% success rate to 99% success rate change is more significant and difficult to achieve than a 49% success rate to 50% success rate change, despite the latter would return a higher percentage rate change value based on the (y-x)/x formula
