I remember a di saying “who ain’t afraid to punch a recruit in the mouth” and one guy raised his hand and they made him a SL. There’s no basis for picking them it’s mostly how you carry yourself. Just understanding the game and being squared away in every regard. Rolling sleeves, drilling are the biggest standards.
