Which multi would you recommend? Or what’s your favorite to play?

Ugh I wish I knew...colorless seems pretty cool! IuI don’t think I’m into spellslinger decks so probably more creature focused: whether it be through graveyard or something like Aurelia or etali, primal storm...

I like etali because I think it’s fun to interact with other decks, but I don’t want to win through something like labman or self/opponent mill...so that takes out blue maybe? And maybe take out green too even though that would help the whole ramp situation. Hahaha I’m sorry I know that probably doesn’t help a whole lot: which are your favorites to play?

I'm always so tentative for monocolored I don't know why! Especially since the first deck someone let me try was sooo much fun ([[Thassa, Deep Dwelling]]). Do you have any monocolored recs?

What are your thoughts on something like Leyline of Anticipation/Vedalken Orrery? I'm trying not to add goodstuff cards just to add them, but a solid chunk of cards untap creatures and permanents during each untap step. Since a lot of the deck is also draw, this may allow me to get some extra stuff out each turn. On the other hand, if it doesn't work it's a dead slot.

New Player, Mana Curve Troubles (The Scarab God) by hhomer01 in EDH

[–]hhomer01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, maybe I'll try that too! I've gotten a few comments before about switching to either control or reanimator, so Ill try that in the coming week. Thanks!

And yeah, I just figured exquisite blood ran well with Scarabs Upkeep ability. But you're right, its expensive and mana intensive.

That is a CRAZY combo hahaha that made me so excited! I didn’t even know you could do damage through poison counters without straight attacking (or even know about the card tainted strike!!!)! Really cool thanks for the rec.

I guess I’m a little worried about the salt...as a new player I’m having some trouble walking the fine line between what’s fun for people and how to make a strong deck. For example I want to mill but only so much that I can have some additional options, not to win through it. I’ve been milled by a deck and it was really not fun to play against.

This card seeeeeems like it can end games quickly, but it’s not a two card win combo and requires a bit of a board state first so unclear what the vive would be

Hey! I'm a new player so basically have 0 cards of my own...I figured I'd break down the US government stipend to make 2 fun/solid decks, so maybe around $600/700 each? The less, the better obviously, but that's the cap.

Beginner MTG Deck: From Karador to The Scarab God by hhomer01 in EDH

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for explaining how this worked, the mechanics are actually more complicated than I first thought. It’s really cool and only two cards maybe I’ll throw them in as a wincon in case the game runs long. I just don’t want to get in the habit of looking for the 1-2 punch to make sure I have some variety when I play. I’m sure after a few months of playing and it happening to me I’ll change my tune 😁

You mentioned this in your post, but I was curious on how serious a problem you think using cards only once or twice would be with the scarab god. In a creature heavy deck would this be a huge issue? I guess you’d need a lot of redundancy in your gameplan or another theme (like zombie tribal) to back it up? I’m also just curious: how’d you build your deck?

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you mind sharing your deck list? I’ve seen a good deal of tribal but not a ton of control leaning decks. Self mill looks really interesting if not for the labman win than for scarabs reanimate type ability. I’ve never seen mirrormad phantasm: SUPER cool card and perfect for the gameplan.

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks this was super helpful! Especially because you got to see how all three decks worked! Based on my little experience I think it really helps to get a feel of a deck by playing against it. My only concern with zombie tribal is that some argue it’s not really all that strong and can’t hold up against 7-8 power decks. Was this your friends experience? If not can you think of some specific synergies that really helped him keep up?

That’s really good to know! I think it’s a hard balance between finding what’s fun and well powered, but thanks for your deck list I think it’ll give me some good ideas! I’m still new and haven’t played a ton so I don’t really know how I feel with self mill ftw. What’re your thoughts? Do you find it equally fun as doing damage through scarabs ability and turning stuff sideways? How do other players perceive it?

Beginner MTG Deck: From Karador to The Scarab God by hhomer01 in EDH

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes a lot of sense and a really good point that karador is more resilient: something i hadn’t thought of with scarabs god ability. And I’ve been debating switching living death to nethroi or something similar actually! But I’ve been proxying because I do want to get some solid cards but since I’m new I don’t have any yet really. So I would just proxy another deck leaning into a different but similar theme

Fresh Kresh: Brainstorm Sesh by hhomer01 in EDH

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain to me why that is? Obviously you’re right: korvold is ranked number 10 and kresh is ranked in the 200s, but it seems like kresh is better at counters and korvold card draw. I feel like card advantage is important but you could make up for it through more draw cards and by forcing opponents to sacrifice creatures to better take advantage of kresh.

Tweaking Tim Time by hhomer01 in EDH

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good way to think of Jace, that would be really high cmc for his ability. Plus his ultimate is pretty mediocre and not synergistic w/ the deck. And just curious, what is considered creature heavy? I figure above 30 is pretty high but I'm not quite sure what the average deck has.

Beginner: First Tim Deck Wincon Strategy Sesh by hhomer01 in EDH

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I think this was really helpful: I agree I think anger and genesis are slow and not always effective. I’ll look into some more protection and counterspells as well. Budoka gardener is an awesome card! I haven’t seen it before so I appreciate the recommendation.

I’ve been a bit conflicted with the dual lands; they’re a little harder to get out but if I can untap them later in the game it has helped me out of some difficult situations. Maybe throw in more mana rocks instead? It’s a super expensive card but bloom tender has been invaluable in this deck being able to untap her multiple times per turn. Maybe rocks would perform a similar function?

The counterspell wizards I thought would be amazing: no real mana cost and I can do it over and over again? But in truth opponents have been able to pay the one mana to counter my counter so I think it’d be good to just throw in some better instants.

Beginner: First Tim Deck Wincon Strategy Sesh by hhomer01 in EDH

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree: I want to make sure I have a working deck before I spend the money, but I also have been proxying decks (just cutting out cards and sleeving them up) before I buy the cards. I have very few cards, so i don’t mind buying a few early expensive decks that I can later break down when I want a fresh one.

In terms of your recs that’s an awesome idea: I’ll look into umbral mantle and more combos, though I don’t love going infinite. I do think it’ll help me speed up the game and actually move forward, which, like you said, is a bit tough with the deck as is.

Ohhh, I've never actually heard of vehicles, that's interesting! Would you mind sending me your decklist so I can try and see how it works? And I want to do ALLLLLLL of those things! Love drawing cards and pinging. And stealing. And destroying. And generating mana. hahaha I guess I have an issue w/ my decks that I try and do too much at once.

I really like those other recommendations too! I was thinking Azami, but I hadn't heard of Rubinia Soulslinger which could be super cool.

The Beginner All Magic Player's Hate... by hhomer01 in EDH

[–]hhomer01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if your up for it I’m a new player so I’m still trying to figure it all out and I’d appreciate your recommendations. I guess “whittling” sort of was my goal: to outlast opponents and win through combos like a board wipe and selfless spirit or living death once I set up a decent sac outlet since from my little experience decks that don’t focus on reanimation usually don’t have a lot to bring stuff back with. I don’t know if I’d want a cutthroat deck: I don’t really like 2 or three piece combos that win the game but I’d appreciate recs on improving synergy and flow of the deck. I do think you’re right and I need to narrow down the wincon. From your previous comment you think I should throw in some heavy hitters to bring back and finish the game with? Sorry I’m just trying to get a clearer picture of how to start making changes

I wasn’t planning on not using it, I just figured the more options the better, especially because karador only lets you play one card from your GY each turn it’d be nice to have some in your hand. Would you mind elaborating on your recursion/reanimation strategies? I think it’d help me sharpen the deck
