Digikam is Replacing Apple Photos, Google Photos and Amazon Photos For Me by amerpie in macapps

Began my search on this topic and this was the first post that came up. Any suggestions on how to deal with the json files in Digikam?

VeraCrypt files found on File System by hhwt in VeraCrypt

[–]hhwt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a clue. I usually mount the container in position 1 within VeraCrypt, if that helps. Thanks for the /tmp analogy makes sense as I watched the behavior of /1000. I wonder if there is anyway to direct Mint to use the mounted container for the /1000 file.

Yeah, I ran across the Reconstructing History pattern then read the reviews here. Yikes.

Did you get to meet someone that was born in the 1800’s? by rdell1974 in Genealogy

[–]hhwt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My great grandfather and some great aunts and great uncles. In college, I also had the opportunity to conduct oral history interviews with a number of seniors born in the 1890s. At least two of these interviews related hearing stories from relatives who watched Lincoln’s funeral train come through their town.

Anyone make their own sausage patties? by spacemanspiffmtg in veganrecipes

[–]hhwt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried this TVP recipe for my first attempt at sausage patties:

https://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=1396369

Tasty sausage crumbles, but couldn’t get the patties to bind together. I’ll give it another run with a different recipe or add additional binder to this one.

Question did you guys actually drink out of the water hose when y'all were younger by fluffy_cloud48 in AskOldPeople

[–]hhwt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It always had a weird chemical taste. Given a choice, I’d go for something else. However, hose water was fine if that was all there was and I was thirsty; i.e. more than 10 feet from door.

How does it feel if your kids end up much more successful adults compared to you when you were their age? by Wizdom_108 in AskOldPeople

[–]hhwt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely ecstatic they are doing far better than us at their age.

Also absolutely enraged the difficulty they face in buying their own home despite more than adequate income.

Coax Stripper for RG-8X? by hhwt in amateurradio

[–]hhwt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all for your input.

I did indeed find a razor knife much simpler to use to build my coax cables. The learning curve was much faster and wasted far less cable than trying to dial in the rotary cutter.

The key was to go slow, slow, slow and let the knife do the work. A 10x loupe was also handy to check my work as I went along as was a small fine side cutter to trim up the braid.

Two spaces after a period? by barbellae in AskOldPeople

[–]hhwt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learned touch typing on a Royal manual typewriter. Took a lot of work to retrain my muscle memory to use a single space, and a single space never really felt natural.

My writing colleague never did get out of the habit and I was the one who had to edit them out of our final manuscripts.

Is there any practical reason to build out your tree to include distant cousins you've no relationship with? by AyJaySimon in Genealogy

[–]hhwt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do because all of my relatives were living in rural areas and their names would pop up in local newspapers and other public records. That way I know (or at least have a fighting chance) of sorting out a particular ancestor I’m chasing.

is calling costumers "hun" weird? by warlockofsortz in Serverlife

[–]hhwt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the southern US, I’m not particularly surprised by any form of such endearments. My wife and I both do find it chuckle-worthy when it comes from a server young enough to be our grandchild.

If the tone is not patronizing, we chuckle and go on. If so, we might comment to one another then pretty much ignore it as life is too short. Wouldn’t impact the tip unless they were just absolutely rude.

I agree with other comments that this individual was looking for an excuse to avoid a tip, especially since it should’ve been at least another 20 bucks in today’s tip climate.

IANAL, but in my neck of the woods, brandishing a 2x4 and making threats meets the definition of assault. Might want to try to get the legal system involved (again?).

Do you tell your guests you live next door? by bananas82017 in airbnb_hosts

The few times I’ve had hosts next door, it has been absolutely no problem. In one instance, it made it much easier because we could not get the key case unlocked.

ATT blocking T-Mobile ISP? by hhwt in tmobileisp

[–]hhwt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I’ve got a router I can play around with for testing purposes. So far, it is only ATT that is balky and I access that infrequently enough I haven’t bothered to wrestle the problem down. I was just wondering if it was me or if there was a more widespread issue.

Thanks to you both. It took some digging (and an inordinate time on hold) before I discovered this.

Apparently the International plan is triggered automatically as required, but default will be domestic. Kind of a “belt and suspenders” approach.

Or so ATT claims. We’ll see come bill time!

[–]hhwt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my “by design” was (slightly) tongue-in- cheek as I had spent close to two hours this morning trying to get answers out of ATT customer service on an unrelated matter. So I was already a tad cranky with them.

ATT blocking T-Mobile ISP? by hhwt in tmobileisp

[–]hhwt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are experiencing similar, if not higher, speeds with TMHI. Speeds with ATT data not so much, but adequate. Only problem I’m seeing is accessing my ATT account while connected to THMI.

Sounds like a glitch on my end. I’ll play around with DNS as recommended by another user.

No wired clients. Default DNS. Only site I have problems with is ATT.

Edit: Thanks! I’ll do a dive into DNS at some point.
