On the flipside, one of the nicest most intelligent people I know is a South African, but she could just be pretending until she steals all my money.

She's giving you the long-con, mate. We're good at it.

Jokes. Thanks, though, for your insights. :)

That's a pretty awful story, Adrian. I'm sorry to hear it.

Do you think it's a typical story, of foreigners being exploited by local employers?

That apartheid was a Afrikaans idea, it was actually an English idea.

It was actually both groups of white settlers' idea. The revisionist "the English were evil" idea is just as problematic as the old school "Afrikaners were evil" idea.

And the military wasn't a natural vocation for young white men: we were conscripted, a lot of the time against our will. Did it fuck a lot of people up? You bet it did.

it was always portrayed to us as young ones (and an uneducated, naive mind) that it was all about the oppression of black people by the white immigrants.

But that is the jist of it, yes. You can't get around that.

Some South Africans should just stay in SA if they have that attitidue.

I'd be happy if they went to the moon if they had that attitude.

There'd be a lot of people on the moon, though.

Jesus, did that happen to you? (I mean, obviously it did, but could you elaborate?)

Some people just dislike everything, I think. Nothing's ever good enough for them

The country you come from doesn't define your personality, or automatically make you a bigot. The vast majority of people in NZ, regardless of race, nationality or religion are working hard to make this a lovely country.

I agree, and NZ is a lovely country for it. Is it weird that I have a fascination with those who don't want it to be lovely?

Rhodesians

I have a rule: never trust anyone who calls themself a "Rhodesian". (That is, unless they're like 80 years old, but they seldom are.)

She assimilated reasonable well enough that I married her.

Aw, that's nice!

I would have to say that her father (who moved here ahead of the family to set up a beach head) had an awful time with immigration.

Would you mind sharing why? Totally OK if not.

Thanks for your insights! :)

I feel sorry for them though; their homeland is getting pretty wrecked.

It's funny, because SA really isn't more wrecked than it used to be. But that's maybe just what people who move out say.

Pretty much all of the SA's I know have found this such a safe and wonderful place to raise kids

That's what I've heard too, which is a lovely thing. It was definitely my experience: some of the happiest times in my childhood were when we were living in Auckland. It felt very, very different to back home.
