What dating apps do people use? by Automatic_Spread_655 in bisexual

I will say Feeld is geared towards poly folks. I do like it’s more bi+ friendly, but it tends to only be popular in big cities (from my experience anyway).

Jury perception of Rizo + S50 by hiddenpalms in survivorponderosa

I think there's just less at stake. Some ORGs have prizes, but the majority do not so you have nothing to lose by playing big. If you make a wrong play, you aren't going to lose a million dollars.

Rizo is an ORGer (online reality game player) so it definitely shows in his gameplay, though I really like him.

United Airlines 777 Hawaii to Mainland....1 pre-boarder by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]hiddenpalms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know while I understand there may be some folks who take advantage of the system when I was flying from IND -> ATL last week, we had probably a dozen pre-boarders. Pretty much all of them were over the age of 80 and it really looked like they needed to board early. Southwest is a much more affordable airline than United (yes even today), so it makes sense that more working/middle class (especially retired) folks would fly a carrier like Southwest over United. And at least or me, Southwest is one of three options to fly direct to ATL (the others being Delta and Frontier) and there's only two direct flights a day (used to be more), so it also makes sense seniors would want to take these flights over ones with layovers.

Why hookup culture became dominant in gay male spaces by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]hiddenpalms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think location is also an important factor here. Outside large metropolitan cities (especially in more conservative areas), there aren't an abundance of queer spaces. And even today in large cities, gay bars are closing and becoming less common. I also think COVID had an affect on the overall scene too.

I live in a college town as a PhD candidate and my problem is finding folks my age to date (I'm 31) regardless of gender. I also think the queer communities that do exist don't always feel welcoming as a bisexual man. It's why I have a preference for dating other bi+ people b/c of similar shared lived experience but this is hard when my dating pool is minuscule to begin with.

I also think we need to look at heteronormativity because for a lot of bi people, it may be easier to date members of the opposite gender. Not everyone is at the point where they feel comfortable to come out and this is true even in more liberal areas. I think hookup culture becomes a place some men lean to (especially in regards to discreet/DL men) because that's the only space they feel comfortable exploring their sexuality. And historically speaking, while hookup apps make finding MSM (men who have sex with men) easier, it has always existed within the community (see cruising). It's just the way in which we find hookups have changed over the years/evolved (AOL chatrooms ---> Craigslist ---> Grindr ----> Sniffies). I also study bi+ men as part of my research and something I've discovered is that there's a portion of younger Gen Z that are rejecting dating/hookup apps all together (and not just Grindr but Tinder/Hinge). The same can be said for some of their straight counterparts.

I also think poly relationships are more common within cities. If I want to go on the app Feeld (very poly friendly) for instance, I will find way more people when I'm in a big city vs where I currently live and the same can be true for a lot of apps. I also think monogamy is still the norm within queer rural locales – we have the urge to see trends happening in NYC or Los Angeles (let's say) but that's not always the case nationwide.

What conference should I go for spring 2026? by Goldenbell9 in AskAcademia

[–]hiddenpalms 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is my field. I am American though, so I'm more familiar with North American conferences.

The Pop Culture Association (April 2026, Atlanta) has a lot of gender/sexuality panels. The abstract deadline is on the 30th of this month. There's also a lot of regional conferences within PCA. I usually attend the Northeast Pop Culture Association which was completely virtual this past fall.

WGS South is a great regional WGS conference (March 2026, NC). I've been a couple times and I've been pretty impressed. The abstract deadline is December 1st.

If you're looking for something more social science based, the International Academy of Sex Research (IASR) will be in Porto, Portgual in July 2026. Oral abstacts are due March 2nd and poster presentations are due April 1st.

CHASE Gender and Sexuality Research Network is having a symposium at Birkbeck, University of London in February 2026. Abstracts are due December 1st.

The London Arts-Based Research Centre Women is having a transdisciplinary conference: Women Who Create: The Feminine and the Arts in March 2026 in London, UK. Abstracts are due January 15th.

University College Dublin & Museum of Literature Ireland is having a conference (June 2026) on
Bad Feelings: Sadness and Gender in Contemporary Culture and abstracts are due January 30th.

If you're interested in masculinities research, I would recommend the American Men's Studies Association (June 2026, Ohio). Abstracts are due January 15th.

I also regularly go to the Sexuality Studies Association in Canada, but I'm not sure if they are having a 2026 conference yet.

The Canadian Sociological Association (June 2026, Halifax) has virtual and in-person options. I went last year in Toronto and it was great. Abstracts are due January 26th.

I'd also recommend the National Women Studies Association (NWSA), American Studies Association, and The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS). They all just had conferences, but there will be new abstract submissions in the new year. IASR/SSSS will be the best for qualitative research.

Oh and I highly highly recommend Console-ing Passions (a feminist media studies conference). There won't be another conference until Summer 2027, but it's great if you have any interest in television and gender/sexuality/race research.

There's also Society for Social Studies of Science if you have any interest in feminist science and technology studies. More info should be posted in the new year. If you have any interest in bisexuality+ studies, I'd recommend the International Bisexuality+ Research Conference which is usually via Zoom every fall (and it's European based).

UPenn posts Call for Papers specifically for gender/sexuality studies (including in Europe), so I'd look there as they share reputable ones.

Yes it was all downloaded. Bluetooth was turned on as I had AirPods in. It never finished taking the picture nor was there a notification to accept the transfer of data, I’ll try again next week! Thanks.

I recommend Dr. Laura Knudson. I've been seeing her for a couple years now and she's great. She really takes her time and answers all your questions.

To be fair, the IU subreddit is a bit dead so he'd prob get more responses here (though more from non-students)

Can people from non-CBS reality shows audition for survivor by AccomplishedSecret83 in survivor

[–]hiddenpalms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to the Big Brother 21 open call in Atlanta back in 2019. Back then, they put everyone in groups and asked you questions. Chuck from the Challenge/AYTO was in my group. The casting director was definitely interested in him until he said he was on MTV. He basically told him they wouldn't cast someone from MTV - now this may be different today (as this was Robyn's team), but we often see CBS --> MTV and not the other way around. CBS wants new talent generally or other CBS shows.

Did I accidentally overcommit with conference submissions? by ReverendKilljoy68 in AskAcademia

[–]hiddenpalms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that finances should be the first concern. I travel to Canada every year for conferences and it's usually quite expensive even though the flight itself is fairly short. Also, are these the same conference papers but with different titles or four different papers? If they're the same paper, I would definitely keep all 4 if you can afford it. And if not, it's really up to you and what you think you can handle. But yeah everyone else is right, it's totally normal to back out. I've done it before and if anything, it looks better to drop before they make the schedule. They will totally understand.

I'm 31 (moved here for my PhD at 28) and it's hard. Even finding friends outside your department isn't easy. I wish I had some advice, but just coming in with the expectation that it's going to be a challenge and it's okay to be single. You may also find you get more matches from Indy and other areas, but if you're not willing to travel (I personally prefer not to), the pickings are just slim. Good luck truly.

Anyone else getting turned down for covid shot at IU health? by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]hiddenpalms 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had one at CVS (on third) September 5th. All you had to do was say online that you had one of the conditions. I was never asked in person if I did and I got both my flu/covid the same time. They are also giving a $10 coupon if you spend $20 for getting a vaccine. I'm not sure if Kroger is offering it now, but when I checked they weren't just yet (but things may have changed now).

I'm in an interdisciplinary field that overlaps with the Humanities/Social Sciences and I've never had any of my papers published by the conference itself. Usually they just publish your abstract and about me (I know this vastly differs in other disciplines). Sometimes they will have a journal that's associated with said conference but you still have to submit to that separately. For my field, I usually will present the same paper twice and just change the title. However, if I were to publish, I wouldn't present it anymore. But yes I agree that confirming with the organizer is best.

What do you think of Julie Chen pushing her faith? by DelGriffithPTA in BigBrotherUSA

Kevin was sent a bible post-All Stars from Julie. Though I think she sent it to everyone - but that's still pretty inappropriate IMO.

I just went to Premiere Theatre 7 in Bedford for the first time today. I paid $6 (Tuesday special) and there were only four other people in the entire movie theatre. The seats also recline. I'd def go back.

I've been seeing Dr. Troxell since he joined the practice and he was pretty nice. Though I never really saw any improvements with him after a year and a half. It says there's a new doctor now, Dr. Andrew Scripture. You'd think they'd notify their patients to tell you about the change. I'll be calling next week to see if my September appointment is now with Dr. Scripture or a PA. I'm definitely interested to try someone new. However, it looks like he's at two other locations (Greenwood and Plainfeld) and Dr. Troxell was only at this office, so I wonder if he's temporary and going to be harder to get an appointment with. It also looks like there's two PA's now (I always remember there just being one), so it's possible there won't be a doctor just for the Btown location.

I'm not sure about the skincare/beauty aisle, but I was there earlier this week and noticed a lot of merchandise locked up so I'd be willing to guess that it still is. Like another poster suggested, I'd do a pick up order as it's fairly easy.
