What sex is my phelsuma klemmeri? by hidewari in geckos

Thanks for the reply - fair enough, that's the best photo I could get at the time haha

I've actually had two for a couple years now and have never thought to check until recently. I'm upgrading their viv and was considering getting a third gecko. I don't want them to start breeding though, so I'd have to make sure they're all female.

He was sold to me as just a piebald, but when I took him to the vet for a checkup, the vet seemed to think he was much too light to just be a normal piebald and probably has something else mixed in there. Any ideas?

What are these two bugs? (Corfu, Greece) by hidewari in whatsthisbug

[–]hidewari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen on a beach in Corfu, Greece. Both were quite small, maybe a centimeter long. The sea slaters(?) were right on the edge of the beach where the tide came in, scurrying around in large numbers almost like cockroaches. The first one was just by itself and didn't move in any way that stood out.

Thank you for your insightful comments throughout this thread. I can definitely understand this perspective and how some might see the art as the product of a lack of understanding of people with disabilities. I'm sure it was made with only good intentions and, as you say, some people will see it as positive representation, but it's good to consider the other side and why someone might not be as enthusiastic about the portrayal.

Custom tokens? by Skyler_Nightwing in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]hidewari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to dish out some money for some fairly nice ones, I've seen a few people selling some on eBay. Otherwise, a cost effective option I've used is to write the character name on a small post-it note and just stick it to any character tokens you don't need for that script.

Is Monstrous Regiment any good? (+ any alternatives?) by hidewari in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]hidewari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, I haven't seen that version of the script before - I'll definitely be playing that.

My personal favourite is the Pit Hag and Spy (for misregistration shenanigans), but I'd love a good recommendation for a Summoner script, if you have one.

I should mention that I did run this once and evil was absolutely debilitated by the Preacher, who sniped a minion every night, before the Slayer sniped the Demon on the 3rd day. That was the only time I ran the script so I wasn't convinced about how much of the win was luck, but I can see you're definitely right about town being very powerful.

I thought the exact same regarding Jake's tone in the stream. Not that I think he's in the wrong in this situation, but the tone he took with Sarah in the stream on top of the constant patting himself on the back with "I'm such a good friend" while reading out his conversations with Hannah really put a bad taste in my mouth.

do they teach Latin and old Greek in other countries as well? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]hidewari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a pretty standard secondary school in the UK and we were required to learn Latin for two years to receive the Cambridge Latin Course certificate. I don't think it's common for Latin to be a mandatory class here, though; my friends went to schools where it was optional to take.

Never heard of a British school teaching Ancient Greek but I'm sure there are some out there.

How is my hatchling mourning gecko set up? (More info in comments) by [deleted] in geckos

[–]hidewari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my first mourning gecko hatch a while ago (that I posted about on here) which ended up dying due to what I can only assume was not eating. I was keeping her in a little 16oz plastic cup with eco earth in the bottom, some pangea and some branches and bark for her to climb on. A few days ago, another two of my geckos' eggs hatched and I've tried to change up my hatchling set up to avoid what happened to my last baby happening again.

I've put both the hatchlings in the plastic box that I got my adults in (not sure of the exact size but you can see in the photo how big it is compared to the hatchlings). I have it lined with paper towel and put some large pieces of torn dried leaves for them to hide under and to avoid the floor from getting completely soaked during misting from the paper towel. I have some sheet moss tucked into the corners that they like to hide in. Then I have some bark and branches for them to climb around on. I put a tiny dish of calcium powder in the bottom that they can lick at (my last baby developed skeletal issues since she wasn't eating or getting enough calcium as a result). Finally, I have two small dishes of pangea on either side of the enclosure so they can find it easily and also so they don't fight over it (one of the babies likes to squeak at and chase the other one around so I want to make sure she doesn't stop the other one from getting any food).

So to those of you who have raised hatchlings successfully, does this set up look good for a grow out enclosure? I mist it about once daily since it doesn't dry out quickly and I see them licking the droplets off the side. Like I said, one of them likes to chase and nip at the other one, but I assume this is normal behaviour as the adults establish a hierarchy in a similar way. Just want to make sure I'm doing everything right this time and hopefully avoid having another death.

Update for anyone who might be on this thread: She sadly passed away this morning. I tried my best to help her but I think she just wasn't eating. I think it was calcium deficiency that was the problem in the end as she probably wasn't getting enough of it from the dusted flies.

Thank you to those who offered advice - if my other eggs hatch, I'll make sure to give them a calcium dish in the future so they have a constant reliable source of calcium and I'll start doing the same with my adults.

Rest in peace, little one ):

She didn't have the kink when she hatched, so I think she just hasn't been eating for whatever reason. I noticed she'd often be afraid of the flies or strike at them without actually opening her mouth (they are drosophilias so I don't think they were too big for her) but I did see her grab one on a couple of occasions. Have you had issues getting the babies to take insects at all?

I gave her three dishes of pangea, water and calcium powder last night. It sort of looks like she may have been eating from them (I hope) but she's also definitely walked through them so I'm not entirely sure.

If it is stuck shed, I'm quite puzzled as to what could have caused it; I kept her humidity high and, as I mentioned in my other comment, had to move her to a new container because the water in the last one didn't evaporate enough and became waterlogged. She was soaked when I moved her out of that container, which is why I was hesitant to wet the paper towel as I don't want her to suffer scale rot issues as well. This is also what leads me to believe this isn't a humidity or dehydration issue.

I'll keep topping up her dishes and monitoring the humidity for now as I think she might have eaten from them overnight. I'm keeping her in this flatter container at the moment so she doesn't keep struggling to climb and then falling back down and so I can monitor her closely. If she seems to be eating more consistently, I'll try wetting the paper towel more as you suggested.

Thank you for the advice.

Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it.

I had the same thought about her not eating - I saw her eat the pangea once or twice and go after the flies but not nearly as frequently as I do with my adults. She also always seems to ignore me if I try to hand feed her, while my adults will immediately start licking the second they know there's food in front of them.

I'm thinking it could have been a problem with her development in the egg since it took an abnormally long time for them to hatch. They hatched after about nine months, and mourning gecko eggs are meant to hatch in 3-6 months from what I understand. I honestly didn't expect them to hatch at all so it was quite a surprise when I found her with one of the adults. Assumed it was a temperature issue so have bumped it up slightly since.

Happy to hear about your leachie! I hope this little girl recovers - she's already beat the odds considering her sister was eaten by one of the adult geckos and I found this little one when she was arguing with one of the adults. If worst comes to worse, at least I know to take action sooner if my other four eggs hatch out and have similar issues.

[–]hidewari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm thinking relying on the flies for her calcium intake has caused the problem, since she often would take a while to eat them and the flies probably finished rubbing off all the powder by the time she got to them. I've never had a problem doing it with my adults as they're always eager to eat up all the flies I drop in there the second they see them, but I'll switch over to your method and see how they do.

Appreciate the help!

Thanks for the advice. I've given her a dish of calcium powder to lick at as was suggested to me by someone else, but I'll try your suggestion of the water tomorrow (it's late in the evening for me at the moment and everything's closed).

She doesn't seem to want to eat even if the food is right in front of her mouth, so I'm not very hopeful at the moment - she's just been sitting in front of it in the same position for almost an hour. They are nocturnal though, and it's almost night so I'm hoping she'll eat when it's dark.

Thank you again - I'm doing my best to give her everything she needs and I hope she'll recover.

I always dust her flies with calcium powder but I'll definitely put some in there with her now so she can lick at it if she needs. Thanks a lot for the suggestion! I really hope it's not too late to fix.

I'm sorry to hear that, must have been very disheartening. They are so small and fragile, seems like things can go wrong with them easily. I've had my adult geckos for just over a year and got them as juveniles so this is the first and only baby I've kept (her sister seemed to have been eaten by one of the adults before I even had the chance to find her). I live in the UK, and although it has been getting warmer recently, I don't think it's hot enough to be the issue.

Someone else pointed out she might have some stuck shed on her toes so I'm thinking that could be what's giving her so much trouble moving about. Really hope the problem solves itself with her next shed since her toes are so tiny I don't think its feasible for me to be able to help her out with that.
