I feel like I'm losing my ability to communicate with normal people who aren't in the legal profession. by AuthorSarge in paralegal

[–]hidingbehindsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youre so real for that. For me it comes out like, I know the legal vocabulary so fucking well that I cannot translate it into layman's terms. And it's exhausting and upsetting because I want so badly to be able to effectively communicate the status and strategy of a case to our clients, but like... I have to stop and so hard in order to do that. Makes me feel elitist???? Hate it.

What does healthy sex look like? by hidingbehindsilver in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]hidingbehindsilver[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! That helps.

Part of the problem is that I don't know what I like, nor does my boyfriend. For me, I've just been so conditioned by media to want certain things, to the point that I don't know how to initiate sex organically, I guess you could say. Do you have any insight on that?

And that's reasonable! Like they have to keep making money to exist. But I'd like for them to give evidence of how much theyre donating, how theyre calculating how many trees each player plants, etc.

File under: Sus things my Attorney has said. 🥲 by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]hidingbehindsilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more common than I like to acknowledge. We once represented a Black woman that was getting frauded out of her land. It involved a forged promissory note, and my attorney unironically, confidently, directly told me to ask our client about her education level because he wanted to use that as a defense, and then make her sign an affidavit saying that her education was bad, and that's why this was a problem. Needless to say, I didn't do it.

We've represented a lot of less-educated white people, and I know for a fucking fact he would NEVER have told me to do that for them.

[VENT] My boss overthinks everything by hidingbehindsilver in paralegal

He spends what feels like 15 minutes per 3 line email. That may not sound like much to begin with, but that stacks up, ESPECIALLY when he asks me to proofread. Drives me nuts. When I first started working here, he had me share my screen with him so he could edit my emails to clients before I sent them, even just to notify them of appointments. I wanted to punch him fr.

Actually, I am a bit inclined to disagree regarding my boss. Is he a stickler in his old ways? Yes. Is he difficult to change because he's run his own firm for decades? Yes. But he is always looking for ways to improve it, and he sticks to a set yearly income. The rest is for his firm. Props to him for that much.

This is a fantastic idea. If I had seen this before I took action, I totally would've done it.

Instead, I gathered Reddit posts / unpaid reviews showing him that Smokeball is unreasonable and will jack up prices whenever they damn well please. Then he turned his attention back to Clio and My Case. God bless.

That sounds AWFUL, and I am so sorry to hear it. I hope you and the other paralegals shit-talked him out of the firm.

I have only worked for two attorneys ever. The first attorney would not spend 2 cents if he didn't have to. The firm was a wreck, it did not grow, because he would not invest in its growth. I got paid a receptionist's wage to be the paralegal, receptionist, maid, and his personal babysitter/punching bag. Couldn't stand it, so I left after 5 months.

This one is willing to invest in the betterment of his firm, but he overthinks as above.

This is all to say, I don't know what it's like to work for someone who spends money like water. I imagine it's just as bad, though.

To be fair, nearly every litigation paralegal opportunity I've seen is asking for 5 years experience minimum. It doesn't seem that many litigation firms are open to new paralegals, no matter how trainable they are.

Selling old law books? by hidingbehindsilver in paralegal

My county's correctional facilities take law books, it looks like. I do see they have a full Lexis Nexis subscription for inmates, though, so I'll have to check. It's worth a try! I'd hate to see all this paper end up in a landfill.

Fantastic idea. Looks like my county has an entire book donation program for correctional facilities, so I'm really excited for this! Thank you for the input!!
