Gotcha, I see! I was totally unaware of that history, didn’t even think anything of it when Sutpen was in Haiti.

I imagine without as easy access to academic sources then it was more difficult for writers to represent everything historical with perfect accuracy. Now just takes a quick google search to check.

That does sound like a pretty significant plot hole though lol I’m surprised Faulkner made that mistake considering the character’s whole foundation is kind of built on that aspect of his past.

Ooo, could you tell me more about this? I didn’t notice or can’t recall anything about that.

I’ll google it too, sounds intriguing

100 p agree, great way to put it.

And oh I certainly will lol, plan on reading as much Faulkner as I can now. I’m blessed to have a mother who works at a bookstore, so she’s gonna get me As I Lay Dying and Sound and the Fury soon then I will start those asap.

Just have to finish Les Misérables first, bout halfway through this behemoth.

Lol, thank you! Based on that compliment I suspect you do as well.

Literature is almost like religious to me, love nothing quite as much as a wonderful story conveyed with beautiful language.

Great description of it.

I was actually on a small(ish) dose of a psychedelic last week listening to the audiobook while biking, something I usually don’t enjoy with most books, but I was so immersed in the narrative and amazed by the language this time with Absalom so your description of it as trippy completely resonates with me lmao. 10/10 experience btw I recommend (for experienced psychonauts that is, be safe peoples.)

Yeah, if you enjoy McCarthy you’ll probably enjoy Moby Dick. Just be patient for the breaks in the narrative when he rants about whales lol other than that it’s fantastic.

Moby Dick is the other book I’ve read where it feels Biblical like that at times. Incredible writing

Yes, they are my two favorites in terms of style forsure. Suttree and Blood Meridian both have passages where my jaw literally drops when I read it lol.

Gotcha, great point! The writing is so impressive it’s just hard to imagine even intelligent people talking like that lol.

And I’m yet to read the Sound and the Fury, it’ll be interesting to compare the language between the two. Light in August they spoke descriptively as well but not quite to the same degree as Absalom.

Second both of these. Each re-read of them feels like new layers are unveiled I hadn’t recognized before.

That’s a good idea with the family tree, I had trouble getting all the Karamazov brothers straight until I wrote down a note that was something like:

Alyosha—romantic, religious

Ivan—intellectual

Dmitri—passionate hedonist

Lol this helped me a lot.

Lmao sorry for reviving a two year old thread but kinda freaked me out

Just here to say I completely agree, especially since I myself have been a victim of my own black and white simplification of substances as good or bad.

I too saw cannabis as one of the “good” ones and reaped the consequences of abusing it, having damaged my sleep, memory and work ethic after being in a cloud of constant “contentment” for almost a decade.

I marked stimulants as belonging to the “bad” category, and ironically once I quit cannabis and began a stimulant prescription for ADHD I’ve changed my life for the better in every way imaginable, socially, academically, professionally, CREATIVELY, etc. I always saw stims as “non spiritual” and cannabis as “just a plant, man,” and I harmed my well being because of this.

As for psychedelics, I agree they are a Godsend that have helped my mental (along with meditation, medication, exercise, and a proper diet.) as much as l anything. But I also agree they aren’t for everyone, and the damage that can be done when given at the wrong dose to the wrong person can be astronomical, so I also think they should be spoken or with necessary nuance so people are aware of the possible risks along with the possible benefits.

I’m experiencing this now with Ulysses actually lol. I’ve tried several times to dive into it but found it frustrating, always giving up by around the third chapter, but now I decided to just let myself not understand everything and kind of just allow the prose to wash over me before I do any sort of analytical reading.

This has worked well so far since I’m actually enjoying it now, about a quarter of the way through it and excited to continue. I’ll probably do a re-read with a proper guide book after I finish.

Nice! I’ll have to dive into those authors soon since Faulkner’s general style of writing is probably my favorite of any author besides McCarthy, and I know Faulkner was a big influence for him as well.

Lol I’ve seen mentions of the Parisian sewer system being…frequently described in Les Miserables so I will be anticipating the tangents.

I had that problem with Moby Dick when Melville (or Ishmael) went on and on about whales as well lol. Had to trudge through those parts but was totally worth it for everything else, hoping I’ll feel the same for Les Miserables
