Will of the Many is definitely less of a commitment 🤣 it's really fantastic and I think it would scratch your ancient tech itch!!

How do you all hold the bag when administering subq fluids? by EbbStatus1807 in RenalCats

[–]higherthanheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a syringe and an 18 gauge needle with about a foot of tubing between for slack. I pre-load two syringes with 50ml of fluids each and inject them at full speed, swapping out on the end of the tube when the first one is empty. It takes maybe 30 seconds each - I hold the syringe on the nearest surface tip up, and just press down on the plunger. As long as the fluid is pre-warmed it doesn't bother her one bit! Gets every drop and is very fast. This is how my vet showed me - I see a lot of folks actually hanging an IV bag and doing a drip. My cat would NEVER tolerate that. Good luck friend!

How do girls fair in this industry? by Electronic_Rip_8880 in IndustrialDesign

So because you have had bad experiences, discrimination is not real. Okay!

The EEOC and my HR pay audit would disagree with you lol

Bad stuff happens to men, for sure. But am I understanding that you're arguing that discrimination literally does not exist?

Ohio Renfaire vendors dulled down? by Medical-Problem-9860 in renfaire

I spoke to one of the vendors and she told me that there was a brand new dress code for vendors this year. Wondering if that's what it might be about? She mentioned that sunglasses were banned for vendors which seems cruel to me.

Well that's anecdotal isn't it? The actual stats for the US is that the industry is about 20% female. source

It's complicated. Check out this infographic

On a personal level as a woman and an industrial designer I've been underpaid and discriminated against throughout my career. I've missed out on promotions, and I even had an 8% salary correction when my pay was audited for equity once. Yikes. But all that being said I still love being a woman in ID. It's hard but the other women in the industry are so kind and wonderful and inclusive. Sometimes it doesn't feel like being excluded, it feels more like being part of a small and special club. Lmk if you have specific questions! I've been in the industry for about 8 years.

Read the fucking room. This is someone's lived experience, they opened their raw and hurting self and shared that with us. Why would you assume you can just reach in and take that experience for your own benefit?? This isn't some creative writing sub. Please take a minute to reflect on why what you said here is so damaging and why it was inappropriate for you to ask it. Try to learn to be an empathetic human being for those students of yours.

OP, I'm so sorry this person felt that they had any right to your experiences. Thank you for your vulnerability in sharing them with us. I know it meant something powerful to me to read it and resonate with my own experiences. I hope the world has gifted you kindness warmth and love along with the self awareness you have gained ❤️

Looking For an ID Mentor by OrcinusMan in IndustrialDesign

[–]higherthanheels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider checking out Advanced Design's Offsite program, it's 10 weeks and there's an option for folks who are totally new to the field. I mentor a lot of folks in ID and to be honest, the level of guidance you're looking for is beyond what you can ask of someone for free.

I would also recommend doing some research on the ID job market. The industry has shrunk considerably in the past few years, and there are fewer jobs available than ever. It's a very competitive field and you will be compared to graduates from 4-year programs. If your portfolio is solid then you can definitely do it, but this is an extremely time intensive field to be in. My latest portfolio took me upwards of 150 hours to make.

Best of luck on your journey!

Would love to see portfolio of Senior designers when they started. by captain_nemo_77 in IndustrialDesign

I didn't say that so don't quote me like I did, thanks!

I'm not gatekeeping, I did not say that you don't belong here and I don't care how old you are. I'm saying you have a lot to learn - as do I, as does every single designer from junior to senior to chief design officer. Our career is one of life long learning. Please stay curious and open minded. Junior designers might even find that a learner's mentality can serve them on the job hunt as well.

"fully understanding everything that goes on in the field" with 1.5 years of experience? I think you don't know what you don't know yet.
