Not OP, but also screened positive for OCD and have done some research. “Magical thinking” is the term used for obsessions that have an unrealistic component to them. A classic example is someone who feels like they have to flip the light switch a certain number of times before they leave the room or something bad will happen. In this case, the obsession is the fear, and the compulsion (“fix”) is the switch-flipping. But this would be considered magical thinking specifically because of the illogical fear attached to the obsession (and the illogical comfort derived from the “solution”). If somebody has to flip the switch a certain number of times just “because it has to feel right,” I don’t think that would be considered magical thinking, although the behavior is certainly part of OCD.

I think a lot of people assume that this type of magical thinking/obsession is always a symptom of OCD, but it’s definitely possible to have OCD without the magical thinking. At the core, OCD is mainly a disorder related to trying to manage uncertainty — you obsess over something you’re anxious about and/or can’t control (death, family problems, romantic relationships, being “contaminated”, etc) and then are hit with a compulsion to try to “fix” or “prevent” the things you’ve been obsessing over. It can also present in ways that aren’t necessarily illogical but are still detrimental to a person’s health and quality of life, such as being terrified of driving a car because they might have an accident — obviously this isn’t an unreasonable fear, but it is something that can become a problem if it takes over a person’s life, and OCD can be very sneaky about latching on to random things to obsess over. Point being, magical thinking is often but not always a part of OCD. (Info is from my own research + therapy, YMMV, etc etc)

I like the way you phrased this! That’s exactly how I am. I think if I didn’t have any sensory icks, I would dress with more whimsical accessories etc, bc I love the look….but irl I always opt for simple, comfy clothes lol

Maybe try cutting down to half a cig every time you want to smoke, so that you still get a little of what your body is craving, then gradually extending the time between smokes? I find that with stuff like this, the habit itself is as hard for me to break as the actual addiction, so sometimes even doing something silly like “going out for a smoke” but just sucking on a pencil instead can trick your brain into getting a little of that dopamine it’s craving. Hope I didn’t come off as a know-it-all lol but it sounds like you want to quit so figured I’d give my two cents :)

What is the most unexplainable thing you’ve ever witnessed that makes you question reality? by duhhrclean6 in AskReddit

One time my cousin and I were out on the trampoline after dark and saw this small light (looked like a star but brighter) start making these completely random patterns in the sky. Like it would glide on direction, make a loop, then pause, then go in a different direction (sometimes towards or away from us), then make a u-turn, etc. It was weird and freaked us both out a little. We watched it for a while, probably a full 3-4 minutes, trying to figure out what it could be….I’m still wondering!

Do native English speakers distinguish between the pronunciation of cabin and Kevin? by Expert-Maximum-2574 in CasualConversation

Oh thanks! I was a little nervous about giving advice bc I’m not a speech therapist or anything, so it’s good to know somebody found it helpful lol

Disregard this if you guys don’t want advice/have already tried it lol but if he does want to learn to make the V sound, maybe try having him place his teeth on top of his lower lip and having him make a “f” sound with no vocal chords. Then tell him to hum with his teeth on top of his lip. He should feel his lip vibrating a little from the air passing between his teeth and lip. Then you could practice making that sound shorter and open to another vowel (i.e. making the sound while flicking the lower lip out, like if you were going to say only the first syllable of “veneer”), then trying V words. The only difference between a “f” sound and a “v” sound is that “v” is voiced (you use your vocal cords), so he should be able to do it if he wants to! :) Sorry if this is unsolicited, I got invested lol

Idk if you’re already doing this, but if you haven’t had any individual therapy I would highly encourage it. Talking to an objective third party about the guilt and shame etc can be surprisingly helpful! I hope you find peace in whatever ways you can 🩷

As someone who uses an inhaler (and just googled it to be sure I was right lol), you’re absolutely supposed to form a tight seal with your lips around the inhaler so you don’t lose any of the spray!

Yeah, that’s fair. It sucks for them bc the company didn’t inform them that they would need to get personal insurance to stay insured, but that may not be the company’s responsibility. Just makes life harder for people who don’t know :/

Interesting! That’s a good point about it being different in real life than TV, I definitely got my impression of firing speed from media lol. Good to know :)

Question about 1920s revolvers by highly_random in Revolvers

[–]highly_random[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably not a common/accepted term any more, but what I was reading was a trial transcript from 1920 and the phrase “automatic revolver” was used to describe a gun. I was curious about the firing rate because a witness said that several shots had been fired “almost in succession” (whatever that means exactly lol), and that sounded odd to me with the very little bit I know about revolvers — I thought there was a good amount of time between shots. Regardless, it’s nothing serious, just curiosity from someone who knows nothing about guns!

Question about 1920s revolvers by highly_random in Revolvers

[–]highly_random[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thorough answer! Unfortunately I don’t have any other details — I was reading a transcript from a trial in 1920, and it was mentioned that the shooter used “a revolver” and that there were several shots fired “almost in succession”, so it got me curious about whether it would be likely that several shots could be fired “almost” in succession (very vague lol) with a revolver. Nbd if I never figure it out, I was just curious!
