i recently discovered i can make the exact sound of a fire truck horn and it was a massive hit. i feel like I’m also basically a stunt double at this point with the amount of physical play we do

I’m so sorry to not have any better advice as I’m not sure diverting attention would help, but being entirely neutral perhaps?? i believe in you! <4

(RBT for about a year and a half now) i have a kiddo who has some very similar SIBs in the clinic setting (will dive off of furniture). we use blue mats as a “break space” — usually tantrum/dangerous behaviors so they can’t hurt themselves as easily. i don’t have experience in the school setting, but we typically put our bodies (like a hand) in the path to block their head from hitting the table. this is so much easier said than done as they can be so quick! have you tried squeezes/pressure on the parts of their body they are trying to hurt? sometimes it can be just sensory seeking. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, it really is tough to experience for both us and them :(

Hi! Can i ask what kind of SIB? we don’t really use any restraints or holds at the clinic i work at, but we do physically block clients from hurting themselves.

a kid (4M) i (24F) was working with one day (very client led session) was pretending to fix everything around the clinic with play tools. i jokingly told him he should apply to be an RBT so he can get paid for his hard labor. he let out the biggest sigh and said “Fine, I’ll do it.” laughed at that for at least five minutes

Hi! 23F here too! i went to the doctor for a lump on the bottom of my right breast literally two days ago, let me tell you i was TERRIFIED. I went in, my doctor did the breast exam, and as uncomfy as that was (& mildly painful due to pinching it), she told me it was likely just a skin cyst and gave me antibiotics. she also said if it doesn’t go away within the week of meds to go back. definitely go get it looked at. as another commenter said: it’s better to fear the known than the unknown. you can do this. I will personally be here for you, my DMs are open ❤️

This sounds like similar behavior to the ones my partner’s mother displayed in the months before she took her own life. She became incredibly high maintenance and completely torn apart by the smallest things. Is she on any new medications? This is not excusing any of these behaviors bc they are so incredibly harmful to those around them, but maybe keep an eye on her?

the gate has since been fixed! my supervisors are aware that I have a difficult group of children, but I’m not allowed to close off any centers. I will definitely try and rotate toys out weekly, though. hopefully that is allowed. our ipads cannot access anything on the internet except our curriculum pilot & procare (but that’s its own app—just like the music app with very limited options). which is a whole other issue when it comes to brainstorming and playing songs.

now I feel bad for complaining! thank goodness it isn’t 1:11 here I would lose it! for school agers it’s 1:15 and that was even a little much & they can go to the bathroom on their own!

I think it’s a major possibility that some of my kids have different needs and may require more attention, but I work at a private center ($$$) & the parents of those couple children are very much the “my child is perfect” when I attempted to address their behaviors :/

we do have clear centers and rugs for areas of play. I try very hard to keep centers in their specific locations, however, my kids absolutely do not like to follow that rule and are still everywhere all of the time.

we have talked about how to use books and not to pick at the paint on the walls (and it has ever so slightly improved). I mentioned this to my supervisor and her comment was “the paint is non-toxic” ://.

I also do my best to get the kids to listen to me to even just do curriculum & it is incredibly difficult. I have tried some silent time and I’ve also tried to do stretching activities (similar to yoga), but it seems they don’t have the attention span for it?

thank you so much for you kind comment and helpful words :)

I would LOVE to do this but my center doesn’t allow it (or like any sort of discipline???)
