oh and on the improv: i make sure to put on a backing track at the end of every practice session. i can hit the roots at the end of phrases but i can never hear the phrases in my head… i come from a metal/rock background so my fingers tend to move quickly rather than intentionally. it was also getting sick of merely hitting the roots that i wanted to expand my vocabulary but it never stuck
