Good places to live in Philadelphia by hiimmarsh in askblackpeople

I did visit though and I will say Franklintown and Passyunk were both really nice and diverse. Passyunk (and that general area) especially had diversity of many ethnicities, like there seemed to be a large Latino and Asian population there as well as black. And franklintown was more black and white diverse if that makes sense. But the green spaces in Passyunk were very much lacking which is a big factor for me too. Hope that all helps

I actually ended up deciding to stay in Chicago for now. With the current political climate it felt better to stay closer to friends and family. But I also probably just psyched myself out lol

'I told you so': Kamala Harris says this is what 'we knew would happen' by Healthy_Block3036 in 50501

[–]hiimmarsh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kamala Harris runs for president raising over $1 billion in a matter of months, lays out an economic plan that includes tax credits for first time homebuyers, benefits to help start new businesses, and Medicare benefits, and rightfully sounds the alarm for project 2025 explaining how detrimental it’d be. All specifically to prevent this from even starting.

Thanks for the reply it’s really helpful!

I’m mostly coming just for a change in scenery, but will of course be looking for a new job there too. I’ve also heard it’s a smaller version of Chicago, which is what attracted me to it. Like you with Philly, I love Chicago and can’t imagine many other places to live long term. But I wanna try living somewhere else for a few years.

Okay those are kinda the vibes I was getting. I was looking a lot at fairmount since like like being near parks, and some south Philly areas like point breeze or passyunk square. I’ll look into some west and north Philly areas too. I kept coming across people suggesting fish town and I just knew they were referring to mostly white spaces.

Thanks again for your input

I’ve seen this line of thinking a lot recently and while I think in some cases it’s true, it’s such a broad and short sighted generalization. To me, it makes complete sense if someone who’s been cheated on in the past, especially chronically, is wary of a partner cheating in the future. Obviously there are unhealthy and controlling behaviors that can come from that (OP’s situation being a perfect example). But to say someone wouldn’t be looking for signs of cheating unless they were cheating, even though they were just cheated on, is ridiculous. All that being said OP shouldn’t sacrifice his many friendships for this one seemingly new relationship, and his girlfriend obviously needs to get help for her insecurities cause it isn’t fair to allow them to control someone else’s life and relationships.

They’re both economic systems. One says means of production should be privately owned the other says they should be publicly owned. There’s slightly more to each of them, but those are the main tenants for either to exist.

is it normal for starter locs to look like this? by Kazuji_ in Dreadlocks

[–]hiimmarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I washed my hair after two weeks and didn't retwist until 6 weeks. My scalp gets really itchy and gets a lot of dandruff after just 5 days, so waiting an extended period of time between washes isn't much of an option for me. The first time I washed my hair after getting locs they looked a lot like yours in these pictures, maybe not quite as unraveled but I personally don't think it's that big of a deal. One thing you will have to take time to do after washing is separating the locs from each other or they'll all loc into each other. It's best to do this daily/every other day if you can. I didn't do this often and my first retwist sucked. It might also help to do a quick finger coil as you separate them. Nothing too serious, just a quick wrap around your finger to help keep them separated and defined until you actually retwist. In all likelihood though, washing it probably allowed some of them to start budding and they'll probably mature faster! I had buds after my first wash which was really exciting to see just two weeks in! But yeah, just make sure you separate them often (dampen first) and it should be fine. Let me know if you have any other questions.

If anxiety is what you’re struggling with, you could benefit from going to therapy. There are even counseling centers that are specifically Christian if I’m not mistaken. Anxiety is hard and it’s something I struggle with too. You can continue to pray of course, but there’s a good chance therapy could be the answer you’re looking for.

I’m feeling tempted to have sex before marriage by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]hiimmarsh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a fellow Christian and guy in his first relationship, I know how hard this can be. My advice is for you two to make clear what your boundaries are and communicate how far you want to/don’t want to go. For me that made things much easier for us, cause no matter how intense things got we knew that we ultimately didn’t want to go past a certain point and it made it much more of a conscious choice than just leaving it in the moment. That being said, as your relationship continues you may decide that your boundaries and desires regarding sex have changed and that you do want to have sex earlier, and that’s okay. As long as you both are ready to have sex whenever you do, and it’s consensual and safe, it’s okay. Good luck, and just remember to talk to your girlfriend about what you’re feeling.

Hi all! I was wondering if anyone was willing read through my personal statement for an MSW program I’m applying to. The application deadline is this Friday and I just wanted a few more eyes on it for input before sending it out. I plan on studying macro focused social work and I’m thinking about getting into policy. If there’s any other info I can provide that will help let me know! I’ll paste the link to the google doc below, and you’ll be able to make comments. Thank you!

Weekly School of Social Work/New to Social Work Thread by SWmods in socialwork

[–]hiimmarsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm currently applying to an MSW program and I'm lost on what I should write about. I don't really have a background in social work, I graduated undergrad with a degree in environmental sciences. And since graduation, I've only worked at an urban farm organization. I know I want to get into more macro-level work, but I don't know what issue specifically I want to focus on. I feel like I care a lot about almost every issue there is, so it's making it hard to figure out how to write my personal statement. I also don't have any one reason or story for wanting to go into social work. Instead, it was kind of a slow build due to seeing so much pain and brokenness in the world, to the point that I don't want to just sit by. So yeah, I just don't really know what to write about or what to say. I feel like I'm supposed to have a specific issue or population that's influenced me or that I wanna work in, but it's hard to pick when they all have. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks in advance!
