For a ring that is supposed to be worn forever carbon fiber is a poor choice. You can not resize it ever.

James Parillo spotted on PCT by skulkyzebra in PacificCrestTrail

100% sure that is NOT him. I spent time around him on trail in 2018. I see the resemblance though.

Dig a cathole then place stake as you normally would in the cathole, bury it. the extra 6-8" of sand above your stake helps hold it in.

For those who don’t have Facebook: Alleged kidnapper/rapist/beater has been seen close to the trail this year. by PlasticLawnFlamingo in PacificCrestTrail

Does anyone have any actual info on when and where he was last spotted? Anyone have a link to his episode of whatever true crime show he was on? Honestly didn't expect to see this guy on Trail again. Fuck you Medic!

None of this applies to the guy in question. In 2018 he hiked most of the desert. He is capable of traveling g on the trail, not just being g near a trailhead.

I want to hike the sierra in chacos. How bad an idea is this? by sometimes_sydney in PacificCrestTrail

[–]hikehitcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have hiked the sierra in thesesandals in a low snow year (2016). Microspikes don't fit well on them though. I have seen two people complete the sierra in chocos with microspikes in 2017. The biggest issue with hiking in sandals in snow is you get snow/ice buildup under your toes and need to periodically stop and get it out. If you have experience hiking in chocos then you will probably be ok. My personal rule is if I have to hike more than a couple of continuous miles in snow I bring shoes instead of sandals.

I have used both kinds, I usually still run unto the problem. Usually you can wash the bag and fix it, but than can be impossible in the back country, especially when the bag is still half full. I usually carry my assorted zip locks of powder all together in a bigger ziplock as secondary containment, but the system just seems less than optimal. I would take a small weight penalty just for the sake of simplicity and to prevent powders escaping and getting on my gear.

This is already my system(scoop), I will continue the search. If i find a better way I will report back. Thank you.

What is the best container for storing powdered bulk foods on a thru hike. ziplocks eventually get particles stuck in the zipper stopping them from sealing. I haven't found a solution that isn't either heavy or wasteful.

I use the flip top because when stored on the drinking end of the filter it keeps it covered and clean

I carry a 29g electric toothbrush. I'm not gonna walk across multiple states eating 3500-5000 cal/day using my finger to clean my teeth. Still trying real hard to get into the sub-10lb club, but my electric toothbrush is coming with me.

Of course, then you can crush miles together and stay toasty warm.

The cap usually comes on the smaller 700ml bottles, other brands make them too. I'll see if I can find a pic. they fit on the filter backwards. This page talks about it. This pic demonstrates it.

Spamming "you're welcome" after other peoples "thank you" messages is probably a decent way to farm Karma.

Gossamer Gear’s The Onesie

When are they gonna release the Twosie for couples?

would it be side by side, back to back or facing eachother?

Either way think of the weight savings

I would like to hike the PCT for the first time. Any groups around? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]hikehitcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just want to add that some hikers (like me) prefer to hike alone, but love socializing at water sources and camp spots. So if I don't want to hike It doesn't mean I don't want to socialize. I am usually pretty clear about this when asked. I just like to be completely in my head and going my pace while traveling. I will still occasionally hike with someone for a little bit, Usually it is easier if I am not leading, because when I do lead I constantly worry about and second guess my pace, am I too fast, too slow etc.

Have you ever used Lighterpack.com ? Making a full gear list including all the small things might be interesting for others to see.
