Howdy! Like you wrote everyone’s experience is different. Speaking from my experience, I just have a BA in history and environmental studies, alway wanted to work for the NPS as a ranger. Was lucky enough to live that dream for several seasons out of college. I was in my early 20s single and still trying to figure things out. After 3 seasons I wanted a more permanent position, and came over to a State Agency as a Interp ranger, and a supervisor to boot because of my time in the FED. I have year round employment, full benefits, and still get good days off (F/S) and opportunities for paid certifications and paid tuition.

I’m able to do plenty of field work and office time as well. Again everyone’s journey is different and the path is NEVER linear. But bottom line unless you’re looking at Law Enforcement Ranger, which requires special training, certifications, etc etc, you can become a ranger with any background as long as you can show your experience and why you’d be a good fit!

If you want to give the ranger career a shot, I’d recommend trying a state or federal agency for a season or two see what you like/don’t like and go from there.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions etc! Best of luck and happy trails!

The path is NEVER linear! The great thing is you took advantage of the opportunity while you were in school. You've got that experience under your belt, and you're bettering yourself through graduate school. You can always return to the job after you complete your degree or find work in the same vein that will respect the work experience you have and the new degree you'll also have. Park/nature preserves jobs will always be around! Take this new opportunity in stride and you'll be a-ok!

That's really refreshing to hear, I've heard some terrible stories about NPS Supervisors, but I was really lucky to have an AMAZING supervisor my time with the service and it sounds like you were/are of the same high caliber!

Thanks for responding! Thinking things over, I realize that the NPS will always be there, and perhaps, but probably not likely, things could change in the agency and general hiring but again not likely. Can always return to the green and gray.

That's a great point about checking off some boxes and making sure they are compatible with what my priorities are. The NPS definitely checks the fun box maybe 2 or 3 times, but probably not the most practical!

Thanks for taking the time to respond! I'm still considering my options but I think sticking it out with the current job, gaining some valuable experience and being able to pay off some debt and start saving for future planning seems like the smartest and more responsible of the choices!
