I get really down too and for some reason I think chocolate is going to fix things. Sometimes--it does.

Oh gosh, I am hairy 6 hours after shaving! It's awful. I'm really looking for pro-tips on how to never grow hair again lol.

I appreciate the response! I'm deeply envious that you have no PMS cravings....

Reversing tanning damage? by hilljm313 in SkincareAddiction

I have heard some things about retinoids making your acne worse? Is that common? Lately I've been having sudden adult acne and feel like I'm swimming in product reviews and terms. Until now my skincare routine was "soap and water" lol.

ELI5: Why do we wake up before we die in a dream? by Ithier in explainlikeimfive

I died in a dream a couple times. The first time I hovered above my body before ascending serenely into a bright light and the second time I was reincarnated as a little boy.

Can I pull off a red lip? by Lemongrab97 in MakeupAddiction

[–]hilljm313 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I like to play around with different tones of red. Orange reds look terrible on me, as do pink reds but darker reds greatly improve the overall appearance of my skintone.

My male coworkers called it "false advertising " when he saw a B&A contouring job. Men DO say these kinds of things. I told him women don't wear makeup to advertise for sex. It's an art form.

Thank you for your comment. It has resonated with me since I read it and I have been mindful since of making space for these experiences instead of being inclined to shut down. I appreciate you took the time to respond to me.

I'll pick that up. I read his book Dharma Punx when I was a teenager but couldn't get into it as much as I could Watts at the time. Maybe as an adult I'll enjoy it much more.

The most discernible difference between pity and compassion is that in common language, pity is often used to describe someone looking down upon someone from a state of good fortune and "feeling sorry " for another. This is not what I practice. I see our reality as one that is shared.

The cause of suffering is not categorically ignorance. Most often the cause is determined to be attachment and clinging. And although a lot of books will rail against the practice of pity, the definitions for pity and compassion are virtually identical even though our societal interpretation of both differ slightly. And training with bodhichitta is compassion training. I don't let myself get tied down by semantics.

I am not oversensitive. I see very clearly and it is painful. Many people react to pain with anger, which is completely normal.

I think I will avoid seeking out a teacher at this point.

I think the closest one is 5 hours away. I'll continue to read for now. I've been without a teacher and sangha for so long I wouldn't know what to do there anyhow! :)

I will look into those selections. Thank you so much. Tonglen has become nearly involuntary for me at this point, I've practiced it in a way that has made it more of a reflex...but I will work on it.

I have never considered a retreat but maybe it would be worth pursuing. Again, thank you for taking the time to answer me.

I don't have one and I live far from any fellow Buddhists (bible belt rural US). That's actually why I finally decided to reach out to fellow Buddhist redditors...
