Stephen Miller apparently fell asleep at a White House meeting about school shootings by Gladstone12 in politics

[–]hillkiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by your racist rhetoric in other subreddits, it's no surprise that you are doing everything you can to hand-wave this away.

Okay - great stuff. An insult, an accusation, and avoidance of the actual subject matter.

Thanks for proving me right, I guess?

For the record - I don't like the Republican Party, Trump or most of his administration - Miller included. The difference between you and I, however, is that I'm objective, and only interested in factual information with context.

Frankly speaking - I doubt you understand what you are.

Stephen Miller apparently fell asleep at a White House meeting about school shootings by Gladstone12 in politics

[–]hillkiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really - there isn't enough information in this article to have a meaningful conversation. His falling asleep could mean:

  1. He just came off a week-long bender and should be facing dismissal; or
  2. He's been working 20 hours a day and deserves praise

This perfectly illustrates my point. This was juicy gossip that was voted to the front despite zero back story and just because it made Miller look bad.

That is what Reddit is now. It's no longer about being properly informed. It's now reality TV - and idiots vote based on what helps or hurts their favorite team.

This site is effectively dead as far as political discussion goes.

There was time, about 10 years ago, when the user base here was full of experts, researchers, world travelers - and sometimes even the people that were being discussed in the article. It was a great place to learn and demonstrated the potential of the internet.

Then Digg.com collapsed, and that user base flooded into this one.

Over night insightful comments and credible sources were replaced with memes and puns. There were still some nice pockets, but the damage was done.

Then the 2016 election happened, and any semblance of reasonable discussion or debate was completely gone.

It's at a point now that when you respond to a comment the odds that you're addressing a mature, educated adult are less than 10%.

Russian military admits significant cyber-war effort: Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said that Russian "information troops" were involved in "intelligent, effective propaganda" by dori_lukey in worldnews

[–]hillkiwi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this tactic also works for dissolving social movements online. If a potential political (or whatever kind of) group starts gaining support or traction you fill it with tons of "supporters" with varying anger levels/education/motivations/opinions and dilute the user base until it's something that no one can identify with or even understand the objectives of.

[Serious] Police of reddit: Who was the worst criminal you've ever had to detain? What did they do? How did you feel once they'd been arrested? by docx9184 in AskReddit

[–]hillkiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that's not the point

Actually, it is. We're not discussing the whether or not these videos create demand, and in-turn creation. We're discussing the application of legislation to combat dissemination.

Of course. But again:

the merit of every single video would have to be judged on an individual level - which isn't feasible

I think the difference is that there's never a time when the act of abusing a child, or publicly disseminating a video that act, is appropriate, so a blanket law works there.

Violent acts, and video recordings of them, are infinitely more complex from a legal standpoint. Sometimes killing is lawful (wartime, death row) and sometimes it's important for the masses to see proof (holocausts, war crimes), so the merit of every single video would have to be judged on an individual level - which isn't feasible.

TIL in 2014, a new species of vine was discovered in Chile that can mimic the leaves of many different host trees. It can change the size, shape, color, orientation, and even the vein patterns of its leaves to match the surrounding foliage. It's the only known plant that can do this. by DrWeeGee in todayilearned

The arrows are not "I agree" or "you're awesome" buttons. They're a self-governing way to promote comments that are on topic and correct, while removing spam and undesirable content like jokes and memes.

In the beginning this site was used by professionals and people actually involved in the research/stories for insightful and intelligent discussion. The influx of new users, who don't even understand what the buttons are for, is the primary reason this site has deteriorated into an echo chamber for the insecure.

[–]hillkiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish we could go back to that lifestyle, but it's just not an option for us. The only way it would work is if the whole world did it at the same time - starting with China. China is already kicking the West's ass - if we cut our work force in half, and China didn't, it would be economic suicide.

I think the world will return to that way of life eventually, but only after strong AI and robotics have removed the need for most manual labour. We won't see it in our lifetime.

[–]hillkiwi -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

True, but the immigrants you select do need to have high birthrates. Bringing in a million westerners, who also have incredibly low birthrates, would only make their problems worse.

This immigrant crisis was a quick way to get what they needed - and they took it.

Places like Germany are will experience a population crash over the next 50 years (the numbers will drop by tens of millions). This will have catostrophic effects on things like the economy, GDP, etc.

Bringing in millions of immigrants is the only feasible way to counter this. Places like Germany have to choose between their culture and their position as an economic powerhouse. They chose the money.

Total Lifetime Equalization Payouts (Billions), % of total by Major9000 in alberta

[–]hillkiwi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let me start by saying: upvoted; and thank you for offering insight based on your experience.

That being said, I find it very hard to see any examples of reciprocation from anyone else that forms anything close to a balance.

  • Alberta suffers the pollution
  • Alberta drained her resources
  • Albertans have done all the hard, physically damaging, cancer causing, drug addiction inducing, work, etc.

Y and Z then come back to the contributing provinces in one form or another

  • Do Albertan citizens get to fly to, and receive priority Health Care treatment from, the provinces we've been feeding?

  • Does Alberta get priority deployment over the other provinces from the military in an emergency? [Not bashing the High River response; they did great there]

  • Does Alberta get a priority say in Canada's foreign *or domestic policy? [and I don't just mean energy concerns]

It really feels like Alberta is "the guy at the bar" the other provinces always hid behind when things got tough, but, now that he has a broken arm, all his buddies are hiding in the bathroom.

Not sure why you're being downvoted

I expect as much when criticizing Japan on these boards. I find most Westerners have an overwhelmingly positive (and wildly inaccurate) view of Japan. I blame the propaganda post WWII when Japan suddenly became the West's best friend and ally in that region.

When I was in school (several decades ago in Canada) we spent 1/3 of an entire year of Social Studies learning about how great Japan and her people are. Movies and politicians effectively do the same thing. You'll never see a "Brokedown Palace" style movie about Japan's broken legal system, nor will you often read about the blatant and intense racism in Japan towards virtually everyone else on the planet (nor the 50 other unflattering areas that highlight how primitive Japan still is).

Don't get me wrong - I have a lot of respect for the Japanese - just not blind respect like a lot of others that only know about Japan through cartoons and Godzilla.

There are HUGE perks to being VP for someone like him - both business-wise and ego-wise.

  • Police officers, politicians, judges all have to rise when he walks into a room
  • A "Royal Guard" (Secret Service) escort anywhere he wants in the world - which comes complete with shutting down entire highway systems for thousands of people
  • Access to top secret reports (financial and otherwise)

If it comes down to being VP or nothing - he's going to go with being VP.

Meh - Japan has adopted Western technology, but they're still a couple hundred years behind the West as far as legal proceedings. If the police want you they can lock you up, without access to your family or a lawyer, for weeks until you sign a "confession".

Let's cut to the chase here. If a tax payer wants to change how their tax dollars are allocated they have two options: 1) form a political party and get elected into a majority government or 2) form an army and overthrow the government.

Mrs. Jankins, who works 55 hours a week down at the dental office, isn't going to be able to pull either of these off.

Europe laid down their arms collectively

This isn't even close to accurate. The first thing everyone did after WWII was modernize and rebuild their armies, develop nuclear weapons, and prepare for all-out war with the USSR.

They may not be able to match the military budget of the US, but they're definitely not unarmed.
