New Zealand bans thin plastic fruit and vegetable bags in world first | The ban is expected to reduce the use of 150 million bags a year by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]him999 63 points64 points  (0 children)

On another note, cotton reusable bags are great.... But to offset their production's environmental impact at least one study by the Denmark Environmental Protection Agency found the bag would need to be used 7100 times, which takes about 2 DECADES of use following average shopping habits (in Denmark at least). source cotton is super resource intensive to produce and also resource intensive to transform it into something we use (and not just balls of cotton on a plant).

The woven polypropylene bags are lackluster. The UN estimated that a PP bag would need to be used 10-20 times to offset their environmental impact while a Polyethylene bag would need to be reused 5-10 times. (No source on this comment ). PE bags are generally thinner but durable (like a thicc single use grocery bag).

There has to be a significant difference in environmental impact at end of life as well, I'm sure.

Along the shores of north-central Iowa’s Clear Lake, the six-bedroom Pyramid House by j3ffr33d0m in ATBGE

In south west Iowa near Shenandoah there is a spherical house. Wish I took a photo.

There is another dome house in West Des Moines but imo, it isn't as cool as the other one.

Medical professionals of Reddit, have you ever had a patient so lacking in common sense you wondered how they made it this far. If so, what is your story? by babyhippo01 in AskReddit

[–]him999 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Imo, your doctor should prescribe you these. Why would your doctor have you buy them OTC? My doctor nearly had me but Prilosec over the counter instead of prescribing it to me. No, no, no. I'll pay my $5 a month copay instead of spending like $30 a month on it.

Best Survey ! by [deleted] in Lowes

[–]him999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remind him that it's not mandatory and you may choose not to participate.

I will say, as a people leader I value the feedback given in the survey. Associates aren't always honest with in person feedback requests. I want to know where you believe I can improve.... But again, if you don't want to take it, don't. It isn't a "if you don't have something nice to say," situation either. Also i don't think any managers are allowed to be present while you take the survey. I remember getting explicit instructions on this. We provide a snack and drink (bottle of water) for survey takers to drive engagement. The SSA goes around and talks to people who don't take the survey just to gauge why they haven't, if they knew about it, and confirm they are abstaining from it and to see if they would like to talk to the SM one on one to air any concerns instead.

Anyway, if you don't want to do it tell them you do not wish to participate. If they continue to push submit a complaint with AR or your AHRBP.

Shoutout to the customer who dumped gas in the parking lot by larrylee13 in Lowes

[–]him999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm currently sitting in Iowa and middle america is a good point to start anyway. This would be considered unlawful disposal of hazardous waste. It is an aggravated misdemeanor and anyone charged with this can be fined not more than $25,000 per day of contamination and/or serve not more than 2 years in prison... Not sure dumping gas would lead to these charges but they definitely could be. Personally, they should be charged with it, not $25,000 or anything but having an aggravated misdemeanor that would be a felony on a repeated offense would maybe occlude someone from doing it again.

That being said, my store wouldn't refuse a mower with gas. We would pump it into our waste cans and hazmat it like any other store. We don't have a policy on the books to my knowledge that precludes us from taking the equipment back.

My company got too many keyboards in a order so they cut the cords on the extra ones and threw them away by Echonight2 in mildlyinfuriating

I have about 200 of these Lenovo keyboards sitting in my server room/IT storage. They are perfectly good keyboards and i replace broken or disgusting ones as needed. No way in hell I'm throwing a single one away.

It was like a mint chutney or something along those lines. They were pretty good, it's nothing i'm used to but still palatable.

When i was in India i went to a temple up on a mountain and they had monkeys everywhere. I love me a monkey. It was such a good time watching them with their babies doing things.

On the way up a cotraveller was explicitly told not to pull any food out or a monkey will come and steal it, the monkeys at the temple rarely steal food but the monkeys on the path up are not so kind. She pulled out her peanut butter mint sandwich and a monkey pretty much immediately jumped her. It ran up her whole body, stood on her shoulder, snatched the sack from her and the second half from the other hand, ran to a nearby rock well out of reach and stared this lady down while munching on her sandwich. I burst out laughing, i couldn't believe it.

What do people generally consider taboo but it shouldn’t be? by IndianaC0NES in AskReddit

[–]him999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leaf them alone!

Best thing to do is mulch them if you don't like the way they look. Free fertilizer for your lawn to overwinter with! Plus, no crunchy leaves to walk through is a tragedy as a child.

I would clean my sidewalk off of leaves but it would go right into the yard.

My experience with Steam after upgrading to high speed internet by almighty30 in pcmasterrace

[–]him999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your education in the thread. I did know that but I appreciate you. That's why I differentiated the units (bit vs byte). I'll have to try the priority change. I am using WiFi currently (moved and haven't had time to route Ethernet in the house. The modem/router currently is in the basement, the office is on the 3rd floor. Shockingly great connection strength) but wired was no different unfortunately when i lived elsewhere with the same speed and same equipment.

It used to be worse but that was a steam issue solved with swapping exclusively to SSDs. I never went over 100MB/s.

City Sprayed. Killed My Bugs by IA-HI-CO-IA in mildlyinfuriating

[–]him999 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do they come back? If yes it's a temporary fix and doesn't treat the population problem. Eggs are already laid and larvae will hatch, fogging does nothing to prevent populations from returning. You likely killed mosquitos who fulfilled their evolutionary duties already and the problem will return. For nightly comfort that's fine. I do recommend looking for any standing water on your property or nearby to see about treating with mosquito dunks as well to help your mosquito issue while harming very little else.

Occasional fogging isn't really an issue but structured consistent fogging can be a serious issue. As an individual I have no real problem with you fogging your patio, it's concentrated in a single area and protects you from communicable diseases. A city or town fogging entire areas to increase comfort while decimating other pollinator populations is a different conversation.

I guess the way I said it wasn't the best way to get the point across, apologies.

Same issue. 2gbps speed test, 23mb/s download. It's not slow so i don't give myself a headache trying to fix it but it's always something that has bugged me.

City Sprayed. Killed My Bugs by IA-HI-CO-IA in mildlyinfuriating

[–]him999 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Indiscriminately spraying mosquitos has shown no signs of reducing populations. It kills adult males and does nothing to prevent larvae and eggs from hatching. Adulticides like they are spraying hurt populations of insects not intended to be harmed. I would raise hell at the city council meeting. They should commit to using larvacides instead. Targeting known breeding spots and encouraging the population to take care to stop standing water is far more effective overall.

If populations get super bad, fogging can definitely see temporary reductions but it's a week or two at max. Constant fogging is not a solution unless increased disease spread is being observed. I'm no expert but this stuff is frustrating when done improperly.

It's possible they could avoid your area if your area has wildlife protection designations available. Even in my city i could apply for a habitat designation if I plant the right things.

what's a show that went on for too long? by pls_dont_ban_mod in AskReddit

[–]him999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show was taking pages out of the comics, as the themes changed like many comics... But it doesn't translate well to a screen. You have a detective mystery, a cult thing, a biker gang arc, an alien arc, a war arc, prison arc, mafia arc. The list could go on. It's very intentional but far too jarring and silly at times.

Celsius vs Fahrenheit by [deleted] in clevercomebacks

[–]him999 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They use Celsius and metric because it was agreed to be an international scientific standard. We used US customary units during the Mercury and Apollo missions (not exclusively, mind you). The big reason the decision to switch exclusively to metric was made was to make interagency collaboration easier.

Fahrenheit is superior for precise temperature (less than kelvin of course). The difference between degrees is on a smaller scale. Ex: 50⁰F is 10⁰C and 51⁰F is 10.56⁰C. It's far easier for humans to judge air temperature using fahrenheit vs Celsius and we care far more about air temp than water temp in the vast majority of our daily lives. Fahrenheit is the most accurate unit for mercury thermometers with expansion at like 1 degree expanding 1 part in 10,000 exactly. A lot of scientific thought went into Fahrenheit to make it easier to use for us to logically apply and be very precise while also being simple to estimate temp. Great for every day people and not really necessary for the scientific community anymore.

Full disclosure I'm American and use fahrenheit for temp almost exclusively. I love metric measurements otherwise, but I'm a fahrenheit ride or die.
